What do you use your Wii console for?

I bought a Wii machine in 2015 because it's one of those Wii with gamecube ports so my intention has always been to play gamecube game (which I think has one of the most amazing library ever). However, skip 4 years later, I finally bought myself a good gaming laptop that finally can run most GC and Wii games in 1080p 60 fps full speed. As much as I love to play the games in the original hardware, it's kinda painful to see games run on 480p when you can run the games with 1080p on dolphin.

I have been trying to sell my Wii for years, but no one ever made an offer. I think it will stay with me a very long time. So in what occasion do you usually use your Wii?

I use a Wii almost every day:
  • Playing Wii games
  • Playing GC games
  • Good emulation machine: (S)NES, GB(C), GBA –N64 is not really great but usable.
  • Watching movies: (Yes, I have dumped a lot of DVDs and the Wii handles MPEG-2 pretty well)
  • Trying things out for replying in the forum.
The Wii boots fast and is easy to use. If I just want to play… the Wii comes to my mind more than a computer which is not hooked up to the TV, boots slower and complains about pending OS and software updates.

Don't need 1080p. The games are fun anyway.

You're not alone with this. Seems "everybody" tries to get rid of their Wii at the moment. That's a pretty cool thing for me. I can get lots of spare machines this way – almost for free. Had I done this with (S)NES consoles at the end of 1990s/early 2000s I could now sell them with HUGE profit.
I prepared one of the spare machines for a nine-year old girl. Got some cheap used games, dumped them on USB and now she's quite happy with this thing (and did not say anything like: "My classmates have a Switch/PS4…")

Sadly, it's been quite some time since I've used my Wii. I did have to start using it for my Gamecube games, since my Gamecube has been having issues with video. I do also have homebrew on it though and can launch pirated games that I still have from back in the day when I was "too poor" to buy. Frankly though, there's just not a lot I would play on my Wii these days, except maybe some Harvest Moon games from that generation.

The Wii U does pretty much everything (I want) that the Wii does and more, plus there's GamePad support for a large amount of it too - I've never looked back. I have rigged out a good amount of Wii's for my family though, most autobooting into Wiiflow in a matter of seconds (something you can't achieve nearly as quick on a Wii U) which I do miss ...but not enough to replace my U with the old timer that's for sure.

I do not recommend to use the Wii as a emulation machine anymore. There are very cheap solutions that can do it way better. But back in 2011-2013, I used it to emulate pretty much everything it can handle. And it is still decent for SNES and GBA for todays standards.
My Wii is only used for GC and Wii games and CTGP-R anymore. It does more or less everything it was originally made for.

The Wii U is pretty much an upgrade in every capacity. I enjoy playing many of my Wii and GC games, which would once require a classic controller or GC controller, using my gamepad, with off-screen play and native gamepad controls. The Wii U has a great library for its size, I can play everything from CoD, Splinter Cell, Assassin's Creed and ZombiU to a large chunk of Nintendo's offerings from the last 10 years (and many of their current Switch games...) - plus a few of their sweet remasters like Twilight Princess/Wind Waker. It's a bolstered Wii that has a smaller but functional homebrew scene and it's a great system that still serves me well to this day.

I agree the Wii has its merits as a cheap device for basic emulation and a no-frills gaming system, but I think a lot of other systems like the PS2, PSP and original Xbox offer exactly the same experience at a similar price. For me, the Wii U has replaced my Wii, which is now sitting in storage.

There may be better solutions for emulation. This means… nothing to me. I’m satisfied with the results. Price-performance ratio of a Wii is hard to beat as those consoles soooo cheap at the moment.

Does anyone know an emulation device for $15 that comes with Wii Remote+Nunchuk+Classic Controller and can do (S)NES, GB(C), GBA, GameCube/Wii games?

The Wii U can do more, agreed. I still prefer the Wii for it’s simplicity and fast boot time. Then there is native controls for GC games (Pokemon Box). The Wii is also easier to handle in experiments and with BootMii@boot2 virtually brick-proof. I would not dare to do some things to a Wii U – which I exclusively use for Wii U games and did not even bother modding the vWii.

I rarely play mine, but I mostly use it for Nintendont and the occasional bit of play on the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon WiiWare titles.
A bit of Virtual Console now and then, too.

I have a Wii U but have never gotten ustealth to work to my liking, which makes it difficult to access my USB HDD with all my Wii and GC games. Also, there are some things that flat out don't work on Wii U such as My Pokemon Ranch. The main advantage it has over the Wii in regard to Wii/GC games is the ability to play on the gamepad, but you lose the analog trigger sensitivity of the GC controller if you play them that way.

I mained the original Xbox for emulation for over 10 years. Use what works for you. The emulators on Wii are still great and if you prefer their menus and setup over other options then there's really no reason to 'upgrade'. I mean you can do a lot more on RetroArch for Wii U but the load times are much longer.

I use my Wii mainly as an advanced GameCube these days. I've used Nintendont to test on some Pokemon related stuff that requires GameCube to GBA connectivity.

Also I still play Mario Kart Double Dash on occasion with a few friends.

Yeah no so the Wii is at least twice that price if you want cables and you will probably be charged $10-15 for a classic controller alone.

For $30 you can get a PSP to emulate most of the systems you can on a Wii and bring it on the go (or connect it to a TV, your preference), or get an original Xbox as an even more versatile multimedia system and equally competent emulation system. You can even start to find Xbox 360s for a tiny bit more or a PS3... so I'd say buying a new Wii is pretty redundant now unless you want to start digging into the Wii's library specifically and can't afford an upgrade to a Wii U.
