my dad jumped out the window after my mom went crazy over coronavirus panic

The last memoirs of the only remaining sane person in an insane family

For about a month now, or a few weeks, or days—time has become meaningless in a vast vapid variety of virus fears—my mom has been certain that the coronavirus is coming to end all life on earth.

No, really

At some point, my mother became obsessed with tracking the progress of the coronavirus and how it’s impacting China, and how it could affect Americans. Namely me, her, and my dad. She bought masks, canned food items, and took on the mentality of someone preparing for the end of days. Nothing else could be the topic of discussion in the home. Wanna talk about sports? No, no, we’ll get derailed on how the NBA not cancelling every basketball game for the next 6 months will kill millions. Wanna talk about a new video game? It sure better not come from Asia, otherwise the amazon-shipped game box is goING TO INFECT US ALL QUICK THROW IT OUTSIDE NOW!!!

For my birthday, I bought a little box of cute charmander plushies from Japan. I chose the snail shipping method, and it got delayed on top of things, turning a January delivery into a mid February delivery.

I unfortunately, was not the one to answer the door when the package did arrive.

My mom, however, did. And noticed the Japan air mail sticker, determining that this box was actual verified coronavirus material and was a ticking time bomb. After a lot of arguing to NOT throw my birthday present into the trash bin, she allowed it to “decontaminate” in the garage. For 29 days. A single day earlier and the box would definitely seriously release the virus into the air and kill me within a week. For reals.

Every day since the first wind of coronavirus being a thing made it’s way into the news circuit, my mom won’t stop talking about it. Every day. Every moment. YouTube videos playing Chinese videos with translations and live coverage, news from every region in the world reporting on it.

After a month it’s enough to drive you mad

Eventually, she made my father quit his job, because him going to work could lead to him bringing the virus home. Even though we live in Houston where no virus outbreak has happened.

So my dad played nice cuz he’s a good guy. He said he’d take a month off work to make my mom happy. So for about four days he stayed at home, sitting around, enjoying life. Except not. If my dad so much as sneezed for allergies or cleared his throat, he’d get a full on doctor quiz from my mom. “Oh no you’re sick. You’ve got it. Go in your room. Take your temperature. GO”

Clearly normal living arrangements

Of course my dad was not okay with constantly being hounded and listening to constant coronavirus on TV.

Which lead to him breaking out of his own home.

Today, he decided to go to work. To get out of the house, away from corona. Where the only corona he’d hear about would be the beer on tap in the bar.

But my mom did NOT want him leaving and intermingling with people who might be sick. So like any sane person, she blocked the door and held onto his arm for dear life to prevent him from leaving. Dad eventually gave up on trying to get out...

...through the door at least. He told my mom that she won, he’d stay home. He just wanted to go lay down in his room. So he does.

Until we hear the noises of someone punching out the screen that covers the bedroom window, only to watch my dad haul himself out the window and take off running down the street saying he’s finally free.

I don’t know if he’s coming back. I don’t think I would. Not with the 24/7 panic induced mania my mom has over the coronavirus.

Go, dad. Find your freedom. Be free.

I hope you are joking about your daddy actually doing that.
The truth is that Coronavirus is just yet another flu virus that happens to cause the worst phneumonia in humans.
That's where the true danger lies.

According to studies, it affects the most to people with heart disseases, hiv and older people (talking about 80+ elderly people)
So if you're out of the range... you'll probably be fine if you happen to get it... as long as you take care of your lungs that is.

In my city we just got five casesof Corona. People already panicked and bought all the things you use to cover your mouth and nose... Cubrebocas are called...
The only thing is that... Corona is so small that it penetrates the pores of the mouth covers. Ha! Talk about irony.

On a second note... maybe your dad went for cigarettes... he'll probably return... maybe?
Here's a present for you:

I work for a company that makes DVDs, and a few weeks ago a customer called and cancelled their order because they thought our discs came from China. You are not alone OP.

I think I just read the synopsis of a highschool drama show. Because that is beyond levels of comprehension of this world.

Like wtf. For a second I thought the title implied he tried killing himself over it lmao. Yet alas, it seems he just wanted out. This is so fucked up it's both funny and disturbing lol.

As soon as I saw the title I knew this was gonna be a wild ride and a half, holy shit. I reckon our mums must be identical though! Mine is always going on and on about how this virus is gonna be the harbinger of the end times and all that shit.

At least we all are able to make light-hearted fun of this. Family drama can be hilarious to look back on, even if it's recent. I just hope you stay safe Chary. UwU

Maybe if your mom knew all the facts then she would be more easy going about it? The virus isnt such a big deal to health people, you usually get well in 5-10 days and that's if you get serious symptoms. Some people might have it and get over it without even knowing that they were ever infected.

50% of people with the virus so far got over it and the other half is still in early stages or battling it. So out of 90K people who got it 45k people are OK.

IMHO the best way to deal with this situation is to get even with the fact that you're gonna get infected sooner or later and that you're gonna get trough it as most of the infected had. To be honest buying the food was smart but the mask are useless for protection since even breathing in one's general direction can infect you trough your eyes.

Holy. Shit.

And here I thought my mom was overreacting. Glad I don't live with her, sucks for my sisters. Pretty much a sanitizer bath everyday.

Sorry you gotta wait for them plushies even longer. Has this ever happened with your mom in the past? West Nile and such?

I don't mind the obsessive canned food purchases--food is food, it'll get eaten. But it's her presumption of the facts and how its become all twisted. Anyone not saying what she thinks exactly is an "idiot" and wants to get sick, basically. I've tried to offer facts and statements for weeks to no avail x_x

I just hope the insanity cools down. There's only so much you can laugh at until you just can't take it and it all crosses over into conspiracy and insanity land. Kinda happy for my dad just getting some time to himself without the TV blasting coronavirus fake youtube doctors and their thoughts

Heard that, I'll eat just about anything if it's edible. lol

I agree, you can only take so much before it starts wearing down on you. Clearly your dad was worn down enough. Hopefully sanity returns to all moms, getting pretty pissed off with the xenophobia from my mom. Just unplug/take the cords for everything. Cut your mom off from that shit. "We only watch weeb shit in this house, Mom!"

Oh wow, this was genuinely disturbing, not the light-hearted dad blog I expected. I hope your mom gets over her panic and/or your dad comes back for you.
