my dad jumped out the window after my mom went crazy over coronavirus panic

The last memoirs of the only remaining sane person in an insane family

For about a month now, or a few weeks, or days—time has become meaningless in a vast vapid variety of virus fears—my mom has been certain that the coronavirus is coming to end all life on earth.

No, really

At some point, my mother became obsessed with tracking the progress of the coronavirus and how it’s impacting China, and how it could affect Americans. Namely me, her, and my dad. She bought masks, canned food items, and took on the mentality of someone preparing for the end of days. Nothing else could be the topic of discussion in the home. Wanna talk about sports? No, no, we’ll get derailed on how the NBA not cancelling every basketball game for the next 6 months will kill millions. Wanna talk about a new video game? It sure better not come from Asia, otherwise the amazon-shipped game box is goING TO INFECT US ALL QUICK THROW IT OUTSIDE NOW!!!

For my birthday, I bought a little box of cute charmander plushies from Japan. I chose the snail shipping method, and it got delayed on top of things, turning a January delivery into a mid February delivery.

I unfortunately, was not the one to answer the door when the package did arrive.

My mom, however, did. And noticed the Japan air mail sticker, determining that this box was actual verified coronavirus material and was a ticking time bomb. After a lot of arguing to NOT throw my birthday present into the trash bin, she allowed it to “decontaminate” in the garage. For 29 days. A single day earlier and the box would definitely seriously release the virus into the air and kill me within a week. For reals.

Every day since the first wind of coronavirus being a thing made it’s way into the news circuit, my mom won’t stop talking about it. Every day. Every moment. YouTube videos playing Chinese videos with translations and live coverage, news from every region in the world reporting on it.

After a month it’s enough to drive you mad

Eventually, she made my father quit his job, because him going to work could lead to him bringing the virus home. Even though we live in Houston where no virus outbreak has happened.

So my dad played nice cuz he’s a good guy. He said he’d take a month off work to make my mom happy. So for about four days he stayed at home, sitting around, enjoying life. Except not. If my dad so much as sneezed for allergies or cleared his throat, he’d get a full on doctor quiz from my mom. “Oh no you’re sick. You’ve got it. Go in your room. Take your temperature. GO”

Clearly normal living arrangements

Of course my dad was not okay with constantly being hounded and listening to constant coronavirus on TV.

Which lead to him breaking out of his own home.

Today, he decided to go to work. To get out of the house, away from corona. Where the only corona he’d hear about would be the beer on tap in the bar.

But my mom did NOT want him leaving and intermingling with people who might be sick. So like any sane person, she blocked the door and held onto his arm for dear life to prevent him from leaving. Dad eventually gave up on trying to get out...

...through the door at least. He told my mom that she won, he’d stay home. He just wanted to go lay down in his room. So he does.

Until we hear the noises of someone punching out the screen that covers the bedroom window, only to watch my dad haul himself out the window and take off running down the street saying he’s finally free.

I don’t know if he’s coming back. I don’t think I would. Not with the 24/7 panic induced mania my mom has over the coronavirus.

Go, dad. Find your freedom. Be free.

Very good question, I'm still curious about those. I guess they're still decontaminating, but nothing stopping her from sneaking a peek and snapping a pic.

Cute. I love tiny little Charizard next to his.... "baby brother" shall we say.
And what is that, is that a Rhyhorn and Charmander crossbreed offspring? :P

I dont feel well these my throat is sore and I feel little bit heavy but I am afraid to go to the hospital.

The hell? The virus has a 2% kill rate in healthy individuals. I survived Hodgekin's Lymphoma, which despite being one of the less fatal cancers still has a much higher kill rate than that. If I can endure chemotherapy and laugh in the face of my own mortality, your mom can endure the remote chance of catching a disease that has a remote chance of killing her.

I know I'm late in the conversation, but... What the heck?!?

The Corona virus breakout is not as serious as you may think. It's like the swine flu, or the bird flu. It's not like it's polio or the Black Plague! Some pretty harrowing symptoms, but with good treatment and plenty of chicken soup, you'll get over it within a week or two. Every time my family gets sick, we take echinacea pills and drink probiotic tea, and then try to eat whatever we can consume that's good for us - applesauce, fruit juice, chicken broth - you know, whatever's naturally-derived (not necessarily labeled "Organic"). Eventually, we recover; this isn't my ghost that's typing this out!

Anyhow, the Corona virus is a threat, but only to those who already have compromised or weak immune systems. Old folks (those over 80), children, those with other viruses like AIDS or pox, cancer victims, obese people, anorexics, etc. - in most cases, it's either something they did to themselves or something done to them to make them weak enough for the Corona virus to kill them.

If you get worried, Chary, just trust in God, say a prayer of protection, and do what you can to stay healthy. If it reaches your family, which only can happen if someone infected comes to your area, treat it like most viruses unless your doctor says otherwise (make sure your doctor knows about the virus and can treat it). I'll pray too. :)

The last line. That last line. That's what I hope to hear from people the day I move out of my parents' house!

In all seriousness, I know you once told me that your parents believed in some weird things, but damn, my parents aren't having a heart attack, which is a good thing in the case of my dad last year since it almost became what would've made him bite the dust. (yes, I had to squeeze a JoJo reference in here somehow). And I live, like, an hour and a half from fucking Chicago, where the first cases of the coronavirus supposedly showed up when all of this started going down, like, the week after Valentine's! So if they're not worried about it, I certainly am not, considering it is, as far as my understanding goes, basically just a flu for anyone that's not a child or a senior citizen. And it's weird: I had about three people asking me about where the hand sanitizer was in the store today.

All I know is, I sure hope I can get out of Illinois before shit starts to hit the fan real fast if something drastic is gonna go down. Like, I hope they don't lock the whole state down to make it so insiders can't get out. The statements from the CDC certainly aren't inspiring hope or confidence on that front.

@Silent_Gunner no it not basically just the flu, the WHO has been lying their asses off for 2 months and sucking china's dick trying to downplay this and by their numbers which are obviously bias it has 3.5% case fatality rate by contrast the flu has 0.1% case fatality rate putting this virus at 35 times higher case fatality rate than the flu , also the flu has an R0 of like 1.2 or 1.5 , the R0 of this virus is about a 7 or 8, it has already spread to over 80 countries and every continent except Antarctica ,and no it does not kill only elderly or sick
the case in NY is lawyer that is 50yo in critical condition most likely he will die or have brain damage ,Dr. Li Wenliang was like mid 30's and is dead, there is video of 3 little Chinese kids about 3yo being stuffed into one body bag because so many people are dying they have to conserve body bags, no funerals in China people are going str8 to the crematoria or a mass grave

@weatMod From the CDC itself:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/summary.html#risk-assessment

"Both MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV have been known to cause severe illness in people. The complete clinical picture with regard to COVID-19 is not fully understood. Reported illnesses have ranged from mild to severe, including illness resulting in death. While information so far suggests that most COVID-19 illness is mild, out of China suggests serious illness occurs in 16% of cases. Older people and people with certain underlying health conditions like heart disease, lung disease and diabetes, for example, seem to be at greater risk of serious illness."

I don't have anything that'd fall into those 3, and I'm literally in my mid-20's at this point. If I were to come down with it, I'll do my best to tough it out. Hopefully though, we can come out on top of this, and OWN the Chinese communists (which is why I have to wonder why so many people travel to China so often, or at least. that's what my Dad says) with capitalist FACTS and LOGIC like the Chads that us Americans are! FUCK! YEAH!

@Silent_Gunner well yeah that is just stating the obvious of course you are going to be more at risk if you have underlying problems but what they are not saying is that a lot of healthy people are also dying , CCP is lying their asses off and have been from the beginning ,the videos leaked out from behind the great firewall ,people with VPN's i guess
they have been lying and trying to downplay it since late Nov early Dec , but i have been paying attention tot he videos and what got out is truly terrifying search "corona-unmasked" on bitchute for just sample there lots more videos that are not in those compilations too ,

In all seriousness, I'm not surprised, but honestly, as someone who prefers to mind their own business, this is why I admittedly do have to ask why we depend on another country so much outside of the fact that a certain president before Trump decided to spend, spend, and keep spending to the point to where our debt is something comparable to Germany's after they got slapped with war reparations in the aftermath of the first World War. While his travel ban to China is fine, if other countries are having cases show up left and right, then I'd say it's high time we ban travel for a lot of places and accelerate getting a vaccine or some other way of fighting back against this thing, and focus on developing a solution that can be depended upon to help against future outbreaks so we don't have another potential epidemic of 1919!
