What happened here?

Today was that time again: Housework. Vacuum cleaning, wiping the floor, tidy up a bit…

My pretty new Raspberry Pi 4 was lying in it's case on the big loudspeaker to the right of the TV in my living room. I lifted it to vacuum there. So much dust. But then: Something was wrong. The µSD looked strange. Somewhat crooked. At first I thought it was not inserted properly and gently pushed against it. Guess what: The micro-SD slot was pretty loose. I could lift it at the edge of the PCB for almost millimeter. The supporting solder joints to the left and to the right (only for stability, not the data, clk and cmd lines) were broken.

I took out the SD and it looked like this:

I have not used the Pi for some weeks and did not touch it. What has happened here? How could this happen?

Now I'm angry!

my only guess is that something knocked it over, and somehow the sd slot coming off of the pcb stressed out the sd card enough to break it.

what in the heck? that poor SD :(

they always look so thin, but i've never imagined one could just snap in half like that

And this picture right here, ladies and gentlemen, is why I prefer to use a fucking flash drive.

Like, c'mon. At this point, you can get yourself one of these: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sandisk-ultra-256gb-usb-3-1-flash-drive-black/6182934.p?skuId=6182934 and just use it to boot while not having to worry about breaking it like a cracker or cookie because of how thin these are. Not to mention, who really needs these nowadays? Phones, going forward, seem to want to eliminate every port, including the very one used to charge the fucking thing because the EU wants to dictate how products should be designed. You can't expand storage anymore with these. Cameras? I mean, unless if you're using some old one like the Canon Powershot SX20 one of my older brothers used to use (which take full-size SD cards or an adapter, which usually come with the Sandisk options), you're not gonna be seeing them used. A Wii? I mean, I know its one of the easiest systems to hack, but...just use a fucking Wii U, a Switch, or a PC or...one of these SBCs, I guess.

I know, pretty much all of these other than maybe the UDOO BOLT boot off of a microSD card, but with four USB ports on a RPi4, I just don't see one lamenting the loss of one port for booting and possibly loading stuff off of the same drive. If one needs four players for something, Best Buy also sells USB-A hubs!

Talk about unlucky.

You're not alone.

This isn't your fault or a case of mishandling!

It's amazing these fancy pieces of glass don't break more often. The only thing keeping something that brittle intact is all thanks to the very thin but stiff plastic resin it's encased in.

That failure will happen if the bond between the two were cured ever so slightly off.

It was me, sorry about that. I was going to make you a surprise, but was unable to pry it loose, so that happened.

@TomRannd
No idea. Can’t remember any drop, banging against or anything.

@Chary @sks316
If this… whatever incident… broke the solder joints it was sure enough force for breaking a µSD.

@linuxares
Do you think another brand would have survived this?

@Silent_Gunner
I like SDs. They are normally inside a device and can’t break off like flash drives.

@TurdPooCharger
Interesting and good to know. In this case I would sure enough talk about mishandling – but without even noticing.

@alexander1970
There is no backup because there was no actual data. Just a test installation of Raspbian.

@eyeliner
Wow. You must really hate me! You traveled from Portugal to Germany, broke silently into my house without me noticing (amazing!) just to break off the µSD slot on my newest Pi… and then you failed finishing the destructive work.

Thanks for the comments!

“Addendum”: The Raspi 4 survived without permanent damage. Holding the soldering iron for a second against the two broken connections was all it needed. Good as new. It could have been worse.

Hello.:)

I can tell you what happened:

P1010994.jpg

This was my already setupped Card for my Raspbery Pi 3.

Today I got my Case for it:

P1010995.jpg

And I think I pulled the Card a little "too hard" back...after I realised the Pi is no longer booting and the LED stays RED (I had no Idea at this Moment that maybe the Card is broken) I put the Card into my PC and it was no longer recognized......and then I saw it,the Card was a little "bent up"...

....the Rest was a simple and very light "knick" and now I have the same microSD Card (except the Brand and Size) as you

@alexander1970 Well... it's getting awkward. Just to make sure: Your Pi does not have the SD-slot lifted as well?
Reminds me that I should use my Pi 4 again. Maybe LibreElec. Would be nice to watch some old movies again.
=============

Did you get the Pi running correctly in the meantime (after the problem with the insufficient power supply)?
Hoping to hear from your experiments with the Raspi.

Better luck with the next µSD. Thankfully they are very cheap.

Thank you for asking @KleinesSinchen

Yes,everything worked perfect BEFORE the Case Modding.:rofl2:
I can not say,when the Bending has happened.....

Unfortunately,I did not have a bigger microSD Card (4GB) so I have to wait until "Supplies" arrives.:D

@Silent_Gunner can the pi 4 even boot from USB now? i thought i read it could but it is something new right i mean the pi3 and pi zero can't do it right?

as for cards and drives
if you are lucky enough to live near a microcenter then
go to this LTT video
"water cooling the new RTX3090 is more complicated " and look for the link in the description for a free micro sd and a free 32gb flash drive

the wii u still has a Sd slot tho

yes what they are doing to phones is getting ridiculous , even the new oppo one plus phones do not have any expandable storage anymore, haven't heard about removing the charge ports USB yet though i hope you are joking because that would really be over the top

i still have lots of uses for these things though , my wyze cams ,my pi zero w's mi pi 3 my fire tablets, i just bought 2 cards from BB
and got like 6 from microcenter and still need more

Strange, I have like 3 RBPi2's, 2 RBPi3's, 2 RBPi3B+'s and 2 RBPi4's and i have got problem.
On the older RBPi2 the sd slot eject spring system got easy damaged.
And 2 times I got a currupt sd card, never a broken sd card like that.

Maybe the cards plastic shell became dry after being under high temp for a long time?

Like some plastics under the sun. Or Actyfry paddles, that break after some use. I mean... it's plastic.
