[Rant] Fuck Rocksmith and pointless proprietary hardware.

I'm a guitarist. You're probably not surprised. Before I started playing guitar, I played a FUCKTON of Guitar Hero and Rockband (and still do occasionally), and Rocksmith seemed perfect for me. I haven't really been that interested in it until very recently, so I decided to "obtain" a "DRM-free version" to make sure it's actually easy to follow and fun to play before pulling the trigger on buying it.

Start the game, plug my bass guitar into my audio interface, plug my audio interface in... And I get to calibration before it says to plug in my Rocksmith RealTone cable.

Well.. I don't have one. I scour the internet for a while, trying every solution I can, even trying cracks, and the only thing I find is "From the main menu, turn on microphone mode, it'll let you use an audio interface!" But I can't get to the main menu without doing calibration, which I can't do without a RealTone cable. So what's the point?

It's absolutely infuriating to me that you HAVE to have some proprietary piece of garbage cable that you have to buy separately, making the game cost $55 even 6 years after release, and official discontinuation. $30 for the game, $25 at least for the cable, but that can vary from anywhere between there, and $50, depending on where you buy them from, because they're not actually being sold in stores anymore. It's ludicrous.

Not to mention that I'm forced to use some janky audio-to-USB cable instead of using my expensive, low-latency guitar recording rig, that cable will eventually break as all things do. 10 years from now, are people still gonna be making audio interfaces and guitar recording equipment? Of course! Are people gonna be making "Official" Realtone cables? No, because they aren't right now, as I type this. So, the game is more or less just.. Dead now. Nothing I can do unless I wanna shill out the dough for that proprietary cable, which I refuse to do on principal. I'll just practice with follow-along tabs like I did before.

P.S.. My immediate reaction to seeing that I can't do anything without that stupid cable was tightening my grip on my mouse, and muttering "I wanna find the guy who designed this shit, and tear their jaw off of their head with my bare hands."

@yuyuyup

"All you need to do is plug in your guitar into your interface, connect it to your computer via USB and fire up Rocksmith.

From Rocksmith’s menu, find your way to input settings and switch it to “Microphone Mode”"

... Didn't I literally just.. say why that won't work?

i never bothered with rocksmith because theres no option to keep the song from slowing down if you miss too many notes.

Maybe you can paste in a save off Google with existing calibration. I share your problem, having tons of guitars and a PS4 edition with no cable.

There's a reason people prefer more open source solutions when they exist, and the problem you mentioned with the cable mirrors that exact same philosophy!

You can hack the pc version to use any interface btw, the cables break incredibly easily (internally so you can't tell).

@Mythical I do want to purchase the game, but I want to ensure that it's actually something I can follow. I've seen a lot of weirdly formatted play-along tabs and things in my time that are more worthless than playing without any tabs at all.

@Coolsonickirby I did actually try that one, too. It uh, didn't get me anywhere, unfortunately.

I loved Rocksmith when it came out. Had never really touched a real guitar before, and it was super easy for me to read and understand.

Defo worth getting the cable if your hardware isn't compatible or something. I know a friend of mine played without the official cable.

Ah! I just remembered. There's a no-cable crack! Use that and you can get in, then change to mic input.

Ah, shame. It should have worked. Hope you can get a cable. The game is really worth it, especially once you get customs in and you can play a whole lot more than just the on-disk songs or the dlc (all of which can be "acquired").

Actually, I would suggest getting the SECOND Rocksmith game (I believe it's called Rocksmith 2014). The UI is alot cleaner and the game just runs better in general.

Rocksmith 2014 is what I was trying to play, actually. I didn't think it was a sequel, I thought it was just an update kinda thing.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.
  • AncientBoi @ AncientBoi:
    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
