After 102 hours, finally finished Persona 5 Royal

That's it, after like a month or so, juggling between studying, job hunting, and working during this pandemic period finally I managed to finish Persona 5 royal. While the royal introduced new features that improved the gameplay experience, they can be superficial at times, and only make the game even easier than it already is. when I played persona 5 vanilla, I found the big bad final boss was absurdly easy. How about this version? It's even easier.

The bad part: the new story arc is only available during last 30 hours of the game, It took me 70 hours before I reached the royal content. It's because I fast forwarded the text a lot. In my original p5 vanilla run, it took me 110 hours to finish the game. It means I played the original content 40 hours shorter.

Now about the new story arc itself, fortunately it's very well executed. Persona 5 introduced a very likable character who turns out to be an antagonist who has a philosophical clash with the protagonists. However, this antagonist is not incredibly evil you see, and the antagonist's reasons to commit the deed is rather tragic. I cannot really see the character as a villain, like the rest of the rotten adults in the game. It's very refreshing. Oh don't spoil yourself to read the story. Experience it yourself!

The final dungeon is also quite enjoyable to navigate, the final boss battles are more fun than the vanilla. At least I felt the final battles have more strategic elements. I actually kinda thrilled when I actually died in this game, because the game is pathetically easy even at the highest difficulty (merciless).

Of course, the most disappointing part is probably the fact that, Kasumi, the new poster girl of Persona 5 royal only joins you in the last 30 hours, and her costumes are locked beyond a $14 paywall. However you don't really need those costumes to enjoy the game. I think the default costumes of the game are very good already.

That being said, I am not sure if I am ready to replay this game anytime soon. While it's very engaging and has a lot of contents, sometimes it's just too slow. After you clear one palace, you will spend time to maximize your social links, and when the social links are maximized, the social aspects of this game are practically dead. There are no additional benefits to socialize after you maximize everything.

The next game I am going to play is either TLOU2 or GOT, the last exclusives of PS4, after that I will sell my console, and saving my money for PS5.

Yeah, when I saw that, if you get ambushed, you are immediately blocking, I was sitting here going, "they're running out of ideas of how to improve the Press Turn system now, aren't they?"

The thing is, while the Press Turn system was cool, in the Persona games (not so much in SMT3: Nocturne from what I understand and DDS1 from what I played of it), it becomes more of a game of figuring out the enemy's weakness, and then, when everyone's knocked down, going for an all-out attack. I think they just need to do something different. Real-time combat like in that one alpha for Persona 3 now that they'll be working with a Ryzen chip of some variety (it's not like they couldn't do this in older hardware if their programmers were talented enough, but whatever, they always like to blame hardware for their lack of competence, as these devs tend to do) could be what's necessary, but I think Persona 6 just needs to be different from the previous 3 games.

Persona games have become so played out at this point. Silent protagonist that, outside of maybe Persona 3, everyone fawns over? Yep.

Everything bad happens in this alternate parallel dimension unless if the protagonists fail and the apocalypse/dystopia gets occurs? Check that.

Don't make specific moments in the story that involve the cast and have most of the development of characters be optional, with no variation on how things play out depend on the silent protagonist or others' relationships with said characters? Check that off.

IDK about you, but if Persona 6 ends up being mostly the same as what I described above, I'll probably just watch all of the worthwhile stuff on YT and be done with it. Maybe that's why Hashino is working on that new Fantasy RPG whatever it's gonna end up being called.

@choupette Without spoiling who, let's just say there's one particular social link who's completion will determine whether you get the vanilla ending or the opportunity to experience Royal's content, from what I understand.

I played p5 vanilla, and I'm playing p5r on and off (I'm maybe around August ?) and I thought the game was easier too. But I thought the game was easier because I'm more organised. And I thought that, as there are new social links, they had to make room for them. You have finished the game, is what I'm saying still valid, or is it just right for the beginning ?

I totally understand your point. I mean, p3, p4 and p5 are great game, they redefined a lot of things for me. But yeah, it's beginning to be old. Some thing has to be done.

@Silent_Gunner yeah I read something about that by chance. I'll try to aim for it of course. But P4G on steam has all my attention right now ^^

After beating vanilla, is it worth it to buy Royal? I dont know if I'll replay a game that's 100 hours a second time, in fact I'm pretty sure I would not. I'll probably just try to youtube the extra stuff.

@ForgotWhoIam to be honest I am having a very mixed feeling with persona 5 royal. The additional story arc is like only available the last 30 hours of the game. Kasumi only joins after the post-vanilla content because Atlus is too lazy to rework the persona 5 vanilla scenes. The reworked dungeons give you some gimmicks such as will of seed (which can create a custom accessory) and using grappling hook.

the most important revisions are:
- more night time activities, the cat will not forbid you to do night activities except few story related ones
- possibility to maximize all your social links during the first run. I actually did this and it made me feel I "completed" persona 5.
- third awakening persona, there are some super powerful skills with high SP consumption. they are kinda impractical though.
- sometimes enemy can explode if you hit its weakness, instant win
- mementos exploration is more fun
- showtime (combo attacks)

While the new story arc really added a new depth and the villain is not another rotten adult, I feel it should have been a $20 DLC. I play game because of the narrative, and the last time I played persona 5 was 2017, so I forgot the game long enough. but if you just played persona 5 vanilla recently and you play this immediately, you probably will get bored. so yeah, just watch YT for the time being. Kasumi's unique movesets are bless-based skills and a showtime with Joker. Other than that, she's basically Rise who can fight and being there to call you senpai.

@choupette what you said is valid. The game is much much easier than p5 vanilla. Still, the last dungeon is more enjoyable as it introduced new enemies. I guess Atlus just wants you to win this game and don't want you to stress about challenge. I personally think Merciless actually makes the game even much easier because hitting enemy weakness will result a massive damage.

I recently played it also, I did also like it a lot even though I owned the original Persona 5, I never really played it, wish the third semester was a bit longer, perhaps another chapter would be nice.

I know is a "completely different game" but I kinda wish you could just buy the extra "royal" content and play through that if you have already played vanilla P5.

However, even if it is easier, at least you can get a Platinum trophy for just... getting through P5R. I'll take an easy plat on a game like that.

@BORTZ Yeah, I'll just say that the new content in this game could have been a good DLC pack to expand the original game. Maybe they released it this way so they wouldn't have to support the PS3 port.

I mean, if you're gonna make this version exclusive to PS4, why not at least update the character models to use the pre-rendered ones? They clearly look better than the ones in-game!
