sort of why i'm not getting rid of my ps3 (I couldn't do it if i wanted to through legit means I'm selling my ps4 second hand for $$$ to get a series X (on 7.55 btw) but as silent gunner said most games push out a day 1 update or hell even part of the game to run it good startegy by sony to curb piracy by forcing you to even update just to play an older game

@chrisrlink The "we're doing this to curb piracy hurr durr" makes my eyes roll at this point. I get curbing casual piracy (as you don't want a situation like with the DC), but you aren't ever gonna stop those who are dedicated to the cause, you know?

of course now we can backport some games idk about updates? i thought they're encrypted differently

to play it best, you have to have 2 consoles. 1 that is hacked the shit out of. the second for playing online multiplayer games and other legit activities.
The reality of it is your gonna have to buy some games to play if you want to play online. Also buy physical copies when you can.
For those that dont want to buy anything well, dont expect to be going online till the games server is reverse engineered in like 10 years.

Developers want you to update.
In ascending order of relevance
1) It annoys pirates
2) It annoys cheaters and exploiters as things will be patched that they use.
3) Patches cost money to create and deploy. The incentive then is for them to actually do something (on rare occasion it might be to show effort, "at least there was a patch which shows they are still doing something" even if nothing of substance was fixed or substantial issues left unfixed). If they are of the doing something persuasion then your game is better -- while a bad game is bad forever is not quite in play any more if someone does not update then they might have a worse experience and thus not be primed for the next game, or tell others of their misfortune. Also some amount of frontloading it might be better than "might want to do some multiplayer this evening, clicks on multiplayer, oh look 20 minutes to get an update, meh".

In this case Sony also wants things updated (while shovelware ultimately does not matter there is still the perception cost) so they can check their servers to see if there is an update and also force a console one at the same time. In a more technical sense then the later game update might also use features only added to, or seriously refined in, the later console updates.
