The Big Fall (Nintendo)

As everything has a beginning it has an end.

Businesses can never stay forever, whatever they did.

Companies like "Nintendo" started very well, but they choose their end because of the current production/marketing strategy..
Just look at their content and products very expensive and exclusive,
(Super Mario, Mario Party, Kart..etc) as example you can't find these games anywhere you have to buy a "Nintendo" product to play them.

How they could fall?
When you disrespect your past products, you simply disrespect your future.
As for "Nintendo" they still insist to kill their old games rather than publish it in other platforms,
like 2DS and 3DS games you have buy a very expensive handheld gaming device to play them.

They revolution of technology is going faster and faster, what they don't understand that
"if your product is not ready to be part of the global future.. it will fall"

If I was engaged in their strategy I will advise to recycle the old legacy and publish it in most popular platforms rather than keep it strictly for one platform with very tight usage.
This strategy is customized for "Nintendo" because their products are not like the others.

My experiment
I bought "Wii U" long time ago, I was very excited to use it.. sadly I had to face "Nintendo" restrictions wall, not all the games working.
I can't imagine "Why I have to own Game Cube & Wii U to play their games?"
Technically the games can work with the latest device and with perfect performance.
When "Nintendo Switch" released I realized that my "Wii U" is useless,
most of the games I need it is not supported.. not because of the device "No".. because "Nintendo" decided to keep like that.

We pay for the same?
So if I want to follow "Nintendo" strategy I have to own
  • 2DS
  • 3DS
  • Game Cube
  • Switch
and I have to pay nearly 60$ for many games to get them
just imaging how many dollars you will spend rather than own one device can play all the games.

Great programmers in bad business
The reality behind each success is the people that you don't know them, they work hard and suffer to give you a perfect product..
And from this point came the idea of "Disrespect", when you treat their time like nothing than machines to earn money, you definitely on the way of falling.
The trust that cover these companies that push them to think "They created the glory" is the trigger of the big fall.

You didn't mention how utterly bullshit Nintendo Switch Online is, or how (as far as I know) they haven't fixed the widespread drifting issue, or how avaricious their mobile offerings are (no different to most other :shit:on that platform) - or how limited amiibo have always been, in their availability.

Oh - or how they're infamous for taking down fan-made games (like AM2R and various Pokémon ones, etc.), and have a historically-awful relationship with YouTubers.

Nintendo is not acting customer and fan friendly. Taking down fan projects and video game sound tracks is a bad move.
(Sadly) I don't see Nintendo failing at the moment considering the sales figures of the Switch. Their decisions can't be that bad from the economical point of view.

Tying their games to their platforms is not the main problem for me. Nintendo consoles have never been that expensive especially considering how durable they have been in the past. Compare the price of a Game Boy or Super Nintendo (even when taking inflation in account) with the amount of money many people pay for a smartphone every two years. Easy of use is also a factor. Put in cartridge, turn on, play.

The price for new games is high on any platform (and often significantly lower some months later on the used market). Still the $60 price tag for a big video game is not that catastrophic. Compare the many hours of fun you can have with a good game to the hours of fun visiting the cinema with a few friends.

Backward compatibility is a nice to have feature but it is not strictly needed and can be costly if the new console is not a direct advancement from the old like
Game Boy → Game Boy Color – or – GameCube → Wii → Wii U – or – GBADSDSi2|3DSNew 2|3DS
Buying a new console does not make the old console disappear.

So if I want to follow "Nintendo" strategy I have to own
  • 2DS
  • 3DS
  • Game Cube
  • Switch
Why 2DS and 3DS? That is redundant.

Playing almost all¹ Nintendo games before the Switch² the intended way not using homebrew, hacking or emulation:
  • Wii U → Wii U and Wii games
  • GameCube with Game Boy Player → GC, GB(C), GBA games
  • N64, SNES, NES → Three consoles for three types of games. If you want to also separately count Virtual Boy and Game and Watch consoles/games.
  • New 3DS XL → (New) 3DS and DS(i) games
Achieving the same when using homebrew and emulation:
  • Wii U → Emulates or natively supports any TV console Nintendo games from Wii U down to NES while N64 is a bit problematic. Also GB(C) and GB(A)… and limited support for DS games.
  • New 3DS XL → Emulates or natively supports all handheld Nintendo games from New 3DS down to Game Boy. Also (S)NES and some N64.

_______________________
¹ Some games using special hardware might not work on newer consoles. (GBA slot accessories for DS games only work on DS and DS Lite, Wii games requiring GC controller ports for some functions)
² Switch is Nintendo's big sin. Big DRM, banning homebrew users from eShop (and therefore supporting indie-devs), low quality expensive Joycons, designed for non-user-replaceable battery (I know it's not hard to do). Many early interesting Switch titles are direct ports from cheaply available Wii U games. Enough reasons for not supporting Nintendo anymore.

Personal I think, the "Big Fall" really starts with the Nintendo PlayStation.
Everything that came afterwards was just an Encore ...

Honestly, I stopped caring about Nintendo after they stopped releasing Leisure Suit Larry games. I mean really, what's the point if I can't play my favorite Leisure Suit Larry games on the Switch? By not catering to the Leisureheads (that's what leisure suit larry fans are called) Nintendo has really lost not only me but a large part of their audience.

Big fucky wucky on their part and I honestly can't see myself buying their next console unless they focus on my favorite franchise again.

Eh? No other console manufacturer has backwards compatibility for every single one of their earlier systems and games either. You're acting like Nintendo are the only ones in this, when every single console manufacturer is the same.

@Bladexdsl Hah, good one. Nobody is as bad as Apple.

Thanks for everyone comment on this blog.

Captain_N, You are right with everything my friend.. the only problem that the world is open like never before.
my comparing is related to this age where the things should be easier and less cost.

You have a new generation will never accept the same way were these companies was treat their customers.

And yes the people who lived the moment since 1980s will see the thing from different point of view (that's good point).

Perfect details, but don't be deceived by the economical reports the reality is beyond that..
These companies will fall because of massive move of technology where their products will be useless.
And it will be too late to part of the global platform.

Good point, everyone is doing the same, "Nintendo" is the most close example and the closest one on the falling list.
All these from my personal point of view.. it could be wrong.

One day I went to the mall to buy a gift for my little sister who like everything related to "Super Mario",
I was thinking to buy 3DS so at least you can play good games.

It was too much expensive for the regular budget, beside these games is cool to play it with another player
I calculate the price for two devices.......

I dropped the whole idea.. two consoles, but wait still need the games.. oh man.. this will never end I will pay too much.

Now with the great technology and the smart programmers it's great to play on PC and connect your favorite controller and use unlimited options on a big TV screen.
How these companies is trying to work against the reality?.. I have no idea.

@Astifan It's just not realistic. Keeping backwards compatibility with every previous console will only hold back progress, because they can never move to completely new hardware and have to stick with similar hardware. Remember the Wii?
Emulation is not always possible either, given hardware limitations.
I do think that it would be nice if they had cross-buy so that for games released for both the Wii U and Switch for example, you could get access to the games on Switch if you owned them on Wii U. And do the same with Virtual Console, let you transfer your VC purchases over to the next console. They kind of did with the Wii U but it was just a discount, you still had to re-buy them.

This is some of the dumbest crock of bull I've read in a long time...

Nintendo is, and always will be, king of backwards compatibility. Sooo many of their consoles have had this feature built in to please customers, and loose them oney.. And when you complain about exclusive content and games, just think about back in the 90's - 2000 when every single console, no matter the company, had exclusive content, as it was part of the whole console war back then. If you think about it, exclusivity is a good thing, making a company/console stand out from the rest. If every game console had the same games, there would be no fun in choosing one.. And it would all blend together like boring pot of porridge....

And when you complain about the WiiU.. Well thats your own fault! Everybody knew that console wasn't worth getting, even long before it even released!! So if you dont spend a little time researching what youre actually buying, you shouldnt be this surprised when it comes back to bite you in the rear...

Also your english is so broken, its kinda hard to understand what you actually mean half the time...
