Why I Don't Like BotW Combat

View attachment 261725

I just find it slow, awkward, and just nasty to use; previous games had far faster and more refined combat systems. Sure, this is with a Rusty Broadsword (not any lategame weapon), but if combat feels downright awful at the very beginning, where's the incentive to go farther?
Sword swings are way to wide and sluggish to feel good, and it takes way too long to kill a single Bokoblin, not to mention the stupid fragility ("badly damaged") that robs you of your weapon after a few measly hits. Oh, and spin attacks aren't fluid; they have to be charged, and they use up the idiotic limited stamina.

Meanwhile, Twilight Princess craps all over BotW's combat - even with the starting Wooden Sword (which is given to the children rather quickly, and replaced with the Ordon Sword not long after), fighting Bokoblins is fast, fluid, and comfortable. Spin attacks can be comfortably used without needing to charge, and basic sword swings are much tighter and faster - not to mention the complete absence of weapon fragility.

Oh, and Twilight Princess just looks far nicer than BotW (and Pokemon Legends) ever could; the former game has a superior art style, and does not take place in an empty, barren wasteland.

@The Real Jdbye That "hidden difficulty level" thing you mentioned? I wish the devs thought to make that painfully obvious within the starting area, to give players who (like me) despise the very concept of fragility some bloody clue that it'd improve somewhat.

Yet another goddamn flaw in this turd. Fragility as a concept, stamina, slow and clunky combat, no map markers, the hideous art style, how this "Hyrule" is nothing but a bland wasteland, shrine orbs only increasing either Hearts or stamina instead of both, 900 goddamn Korok seeds, the lack of clarity in enemy-weapon-improvement...

As I've believed from this game's launch, this is a 3/10 disaster. Nothing higher.

i understand you have problems with the game, but three out of ten?

@Louse Sure, three. I've played bad games with fewer problems; Super Mario Odyssey is a 7 for me (with 64 DS being 9), Galaxy is a 4, 3D World is a 5, Paper Mario 64 is a 4 while The Thousand-Year Door is a 5 (with Super Paper Mario also getting 9)
A Link to the Past, a game I never could finish, is a 6; Skyward Sword, which I have finished a few times, gets 5.
Pokemon Sword/Shield also get 3s, with Let's Go! receiving 2s due to not even being compatible with bloody Pro Controllers (among other stupid restrictions and changes). X&Y get 6s due to being massively disappointing follow-ups to Black/White 2 yet still retaining the bare essentials.

As for non-Nintendo games, Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a 5; it's basic fun, but the rewriting of ancient Greek to force in modern social norms, and the pointless Athens vs Sparta thing, are annoyingly needless.

@Louse Ocarina of Time 3D? 7, I'd say; it was my first Legend of Zelda game, and I absolutely adored it for some time, until other games (like The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess) made me keenly aware of its slow beginning. OoT3D is still a great game.
No idea about the original game, though.

And on that note, Majora's Mask? A definite 8 for the original; it's fantastic, up until the Moon mini-dungeons; the Goron and Zora ones in particular can screw off. 3D? Without the fanmade Restoration patch? Drops down to a 6, I'd say, due to how messed-up it is. With that patch, it regains that 8, due to still having the Moon issues.

Also BotW might be empty but it's certainly not barren. It's filled with beautiful nature. For the most part. The mountains and the gerudo desert are pretty barren.

I dunno, I think BOTW's combat has the same problem that all 3D Zelda games have, it's just too rigid. Attacks are simple and movement options are sparse making a bland and rigid combat system. The only leg up that Twilight Princess has imo is the ability to attack while walking without stopping in your tracks (one of the best features of that game's combat) and combat arts. Botw's combat is still rigid, but the added weapon variety and ability to jump creates a bit of nuance, and there are fun little moments of emergent gameplay that the physics engine allows that you would never find in other Zelda games. It's still not great tho. Nothing compared to Dark Souls

Oh and gyroscopic aim for the bow is awesome

i mean... it's a 2010s game, did you expect it to be anything other than decent or passable?

@64bitmodels Actually, yes I did.
Black/White 2 (2012) were amazing, the best Pokémon games ever released; Super Mario 3D Land (2011) was amazing. Persona 5 (2017) is one of the best JRPGs I've ever played. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (2017) has gorgeous scenery, great characters, and fun gameplay that has a surprising amount of depth to it. Pikmin 3 (2013) is a great strategy game, too. Luigi's Mansion 3 (2019) is brilliant, as is Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (2013). Oh, and don't forget Link's Awakening (2019), a gorgeous remake of a fantastic GBC (originally GB) game.

There were plenty of great games released in that decade.

ehh, i could probably list more great games from 2002 that all outclass every one you just listed. but to each their own ig

Games could get good again but the current corporate structure of game development won't allow it. For now tho there's still lots of great indie games with a lot of passion put into them that I find worthwhile
