My dad just won big at the gas station slot machine

My dad has been back home for a day now, and while his insurance wasn't able to cover physical rehabilitation, he's doing a lot better than the doctors expected. To the point of them being utterly surprised at how well he's recovered.

He's not out of the danger zone though. He still can't walk without a walker, and his left leg has no feeling in it. He's on a myriad of medications to ensure he doesn't risk another stroke. This has caused lasting damage, but he can recover. They say if he has a nurse come by for in home rehab, he might be able to walk on his own again in six months, possibly.

But after being in the hospital for as long as he was, and having to give up a lot--no more alcohol or cigarettes or even most of the types of food he likes... It's a struggle for him. He was given medication for alcohol withdrawal and he says he's doing okay on that, but most of his daily life was spent bouncing around from drinking to smoking to drinking, and then eating heavily salted red meat. All those things aren't allowed anymore. (he's also not allowed coffee but I switched it to decaf and he hasn't noticed... Yet)

He loves football as well, but he says it's too tied up with drinking so he's wary of it now, as well. I feel so bad for him. He sits at home watching crappy soap operas, playing blackjack with me as we bet using M&Ms and Skittles.

He told me he misses being able to gamble. So I bought him a lottery ticket from the gas station near me. He won $10. Neat.

Except, that only made him want more gambling. Luckily for him, the gas station is two houses down. Counting it as his exercise therapy for the day, I said he could get another lottery ticket if he didn't get too tired. He made it to the store, about as excited as a kid would be for Christmas, literally singing to himself with absolute hype.

That's when he showed me that he didn't want lottery. He wanted to play the... Slot machine.

... Since when did gas stations have slots??? Am I crazy?

So he puts $30 into the slot machine and I'm rolling my eyes because clearly these things can't pay out real money right?

Uh, wrong. He tells the slots to be nice to h because he's sick. And apparently the slot machine listened. Because he proceeded to win $90, then another $50, and more and more and more. And now he has $210 in winnings on some weirdo random gas station slot machine.

He's very happy with his winnings. Obviously this can't be a habit, but I'm glad my dad could find some good luck following everything that's happened this last week.

I once took a trip to las vegas to see the Beatles Love thing by cirque de soleil, and some of the slot machines there were like $5 per pull. I was staying at the Mirage, which is where the show was. I played one slot machine, may have been a penny one, just to say I gambled in vegas. :D

btw, @Chary , I was going to tell you a funny thought I had about my dogs fighting zombies, hoping to boost your spirits with a laugh. do you remember that photo I sent you of Chopper on his back? I thought about him doing a bicycle kick on one of the zombies while in that position. :P and, Harley was wearing a cloak, looking down as to hide her face since her snout was too long. :D

Dude, that is awesome. Winning the lottery is big, regardless of the amount. Congrats to your dad!

Congrats! Luck was indeed by his side, but it would be best if he limits playing as it could easily turn into an addiction.. Unless he's Nick Papagiorgio of course, then just let him go!

Hmm, my dad is sick too, coincidentally, but I'm pretty sure it's not the same problem. However, I still feel for ya. My prayers go out to your dad tonight.

Yo @Chary, it saddens me to know your dad had a stroke... been there.
I certainly don't know about his situation, but make sure you tell him he's got a lot of folks whom wish them for his soon recovery.

About physical recovery, can tell from personal experience, it depends on how long it will take, but for me it was 6/8 months.

The first months were rough. I totally forgot how to write with pen and paper, forgot english words (and affected my japanese and french too) but drawing and lots of rest helped me to recover faster (aside having blood pressure problems, most of the days was above 120/160 sometimes for 4 months) so that's expected, be sure to have his blood pressure and sugar levels on check at all times.

Give the man something to distract with, like puzzles, videogames or small walks around the house. That helps.

Also, yes eating healthy (usually I'd go for steamed vegetables with plain meat/fish for variety) will help to reduce problems with things like diabetes and such.

Be a nicer girl and take away the drinks and cigars. Make sure to take out caffeine, cola and high sugar beverages. If possible natural fruit water/juices would soothe the need for something sweet (trust me, after having an episode the body craves for calories).

About the gambling luck, if we rule out the possibility of mathematical proprobabilities, yes I guess he has had the best of luck lately.
I mean, you could be telling us a completely different story, so let the man have a break and enjoy his gambling career for a while.

EDIT: Ah, forgot to call mathematical probabilities, Stadistics.

Thank you! I appreciate all the advice!

The doctors said it's looking at about 6 months or so, yeah. He says he's found it difficult to recall some words in English, and when I picked him up from the hospital, he was mostly talking in Farsi with my uncle, because he found it easier to do.

The blood pressure is a real danger atm. It's been about 160/100. He's on some more hardcore medicine to help with it now, at least. The initial meds weren't enough, apparently. His goal is 139/90, I think.

My main struggle is that he doesn't like much. He loves sports, but he also associates it with drinking (not allowed). He likes crosswords, but associates it with coffee (not allowed). His hobbies involve mostly just vibing with a cigarette in the front lawn, which again, not allowed. He's a very simple kinda guy--he doesn't like technology. I got him a slot machine game on a tablet, but he hates it. He doesn't use a phone so there's nothing there either. There's like, one game he enjoys (animal crossing wii) but he's finding it difficult to hold his arm up to play it with the motion controls without getting tired.

Luckily, he hates soda and eats pretty great always. That part has just mostly been reducing salt where we can. He's got nicotine patches for the cigs at least, though he says they're not helping him that much and he craves them. i've been spending my time trying to distract him with playing card games, but he says it's just constantly in his mind, wanting to smoke. I'm hopeful his cravings will chill out in due time.

He is having some crazy good luck lately. I suppose so long as he can walk there, he should be able to enjoy his slot machine, haha.

Good luck to you and your father Chary.
I send you and your family my sincerest and best regards.

Don't worry, everything should be fine by now.

It's a slow and tedious recovery, I know that, but ultimately it's gonna happen.
