Phones at school are getting out of hand

Phones; something that all my peers are addicted to.

Recently I've noticed the large number of students with phones out during class. I've suddenly taken an interest in this and decided to watch my classmates.

Most of the time my peers will be taking pictures and sending them to people. Every day they send what seems like a hundred pictures of their face. They will then talk with friends for a few minutes and then listen to the teacher. Two minutes later, they're back on their devices.

Whenever the teacher has their back turned, whether it is for a second or a minute, my classmates have their phones out. They instinctively pull out phones even when there isn't enough time to use them. They'll open the messaging app(s) they use and then they'll put the phone away three seconds later.

During tests, quizzes, independent work, you name it, students will pull out their phones to talk to people.

You may ask "aren't the teachers doing anything?" No! Teachers are allowing their pupils to plug in chargers and lay them across the space between desks*. Teachers are encouraging students to use phones during class as tools**. Teachers aren't taking away phones when they are constantly interfering with a student's learning.

Teachers have been unhappy with student's on their phones (they themselves have said this), so why do they allow phones!?

Outside of the classroom, I've tried having some conversations. At first they are nice, but then the person I'm talking to starts talking to other people on their phone. This really pisses me off. We are having a conversation and you feel the need to open up Snap Chat (or whatever app they use)? To me that's like if someone just made a phone call in the middle of your sentence. How'd you like that? It's sad. My peers can't stand five minutes without checking to see if they got a new message.

They also walk around staring down at a screen and not paying attention to anything. Everyone is too focused on phones, and not what is happening around them.

Thank you Mom. Thank you Dad. I'm happy that I was brought up without a phone. If I had one, I'd probably be like these people.

I'll leave you with this cartoon I found to be somewhat humorous.

*Do you know how hard it is to go sharpen your pencil when you have to climb through chargers? I have nearly sent phones flying because I tripped on a charger.

**I understand where that is coming from, but phones are too much of a temptation. We're told to use them as calculators, and we do. We also use them to text at the same time. Of course when any teacher looks, the calculator app is open.

Not to sound old, but I'm very glad I got through school before phones were as integral as they are today. I remember getting a flip phone in 8th grade and being told it was for emergency only. iPhones were just picking up steam as I was leaving high school. Not that I think school (in America) is worth anything more than dirt--I would have almost definitely been trying to go out of my way to ignore the teacher, but the utter prevalence of social media feels like it's definitely be more addictive if I was a kid, desperately trying to get a fix in between classes lol.

Why go online between classes when you can just go online throughout the entire class?

i am glad i do not bring my phone to school, my school recently made a "no phone policy" where if they see a phone anywhere in school grounds (anytime) it will get confiscated but it seems the teachers dont give any fuck on it
everywhere i go i see people on their phones in sight of a teacher and whey wont give a fuck or even say turn your phone off and shit

I've decided. I'll take the time to write a polite-angry letter to the principal about what I've seen. You may say "just keep to yourself", but that's kinda hard when all around you are flashing lights and dings. (some students forget that they should lower the volume on their phones)

Same with my school. Nothing new for a small town district. Often times I don't use my phone in class and only check messages during the lunch hour. A few times during the couple minutes we have before the hour ends, I try to make conversation with my classmates. But even when I do, they have their phone out. They're looking at me, yes-but they have their phones in their grasp. At all times, it seems. It's quite annoying. I want to make in-person conversation as much as possible during school to develop better social skills in general. But my peers kind of prohibit that opportunity for me.

I have my phone muted basically 24/7, like it's going to be on me and it'll vibrate so what's the point of alerting everyone within 30 feet of me? I don't get it

I keep everything muted at all times. I get way too many alerts to keep it on, id go crazy from the noise of group chats and DMs and news alerts. Only time notification noises are turned on are when I know I won't be close to my phone and am expecting something important to come in. It's in my pocket or on my desk all day--why do I need the extra noise?

i have a phone, but i rarely use it because the school somehow blocks any and all wifi/celluar coming in or out unless if it's upstairs or if you have access to the schools public wifi (which my phone does not).

I feel that way. On certain days, I don't really have anyone to talk to because they've somehow connected to the internet.

My (Jesuit, boys-only) high school did its best to ban phones, at least when I attended (2010-15), requiring phones to be left in lockers. Heck, students didn't start getting personal laptops (Macbook Airs) until I was in Year 9 or 10.
By the time I was close to graduating, they had started rolling laptops out to younger years, though.

And honestly, plenty of boys still acted out; there were a handful of times where my entire yeargroup had to have an impromptu assembly due to atrocious behaviour at dances, or out in public - drunken escapades, or vandalism, or drugs, or similar awful behaviour. I don't remember exactly what happened anymore, but boy do I remember the impromptu nature of the assemblies...
As for in class, there was still the classic "talking too loudly" and "bothering the boy next to you" and stuff, even without phones.

If you're gonna write a letter of complaint or whatever you'd better make sure that your anonymity is protected. People won't take kindly to their personal dopamine dispensers being threatened. Not that that means you shouldn't do it, but I personally wouldn't bother as school response and enforcement is likely to be anemic.
At the end of the day enforcement isn't likely to be effective anyway. This issue is similar to drug addiction, and we all know how well the war on drugs is going. This is something you'll need to talk to your friends about; you'll have to try and get them to see the nature of the beast and want to get away from it. There is a good chance that all you efforts will be ignored, sadly, but there's always hope for them later in life.
I'm in college now, where people generally have a lot more freedom. And yes, in the five minutes before class starts most people are on their phones. But most people put them away when the class starts, and they aren't disruptive with them either. When I try to talk to my friends chances are they're paying full attention to me. This is a college that gets people from all over the place, and it seems that people are getting better about it as they age. I hope it goes well for you.

See I would use this as an opportunity to annoy.

Mobile phone blockers are fairly available these days (possibly quite illegal depending upon where you are) and have a reasonable range, even more so if you can get one plugged in*.

Do also note. Working is fine, not working is annoying but fine. Intermittent random failures though... can push some buttons that way.

*there are three types of phone blocking. 1) Floods area with frequency matched signal, takes a bit of power but is very basic (just need suitable antenna and means to power it), 2) floods area with signal that the phones take in and don't know how to handle far less power needed but more specialist as you either fake a tower or flood it such that nothing else can transmit as a phone, 3) Faraday cage that blocks signal from getting out but tends to mean you need a bunch of chicken wire to be covering the room and powering that. That said the electrical systems of buildings can act as a nice antenna for things so plugging one in and it using the earth system of the building to be what it is...
