"Smart" TVs are shit *RANT*

How I hate this. Everything has to be smart nowadays. With smart being a buzzword synonym for "stupid computer with closed source locked software you have no control over".

Looking for a new TV. Every TV is smart. There is none without that crap. Salesperson: "You don't have to use it." Yeah, but I have to pay it if I need a new TV. So many people have been telling me things like these about their smart TVs:
  • YouTube app crashes
  • Netflix doesn't work (anymore)
  • No updates
  • Slow
  • Internet browser is shit
And so on.
Salesperson: "You are the only person on the whole wide world not wanting a smart TV. Customers nowadays want this"
Customer nowadays, and at every time before, just buy what is there and what they get told is "the new thing".

It is a huge waste that you should throw away a huge TV after a few years because the internal apps stopped working (and there are no updates). Why not put the "smart" stuff into a tiny easily replaceable box (hardly larger than a thumb drive)?

The TV has one job: Be the biggest screen in the house with the best image for movies and video games. Why not give people the *option* to simply buy a minimalist device doing this job?

I didn't even mention the lack of analoge inputs. WTF. No composite. No (RGB) Scart. No component. Nothing. The young man today in the Media Markt didn't even understand me as I asked him: "How do I connect my old analoge devices?"
Salesman "What do you mean??"
Sinchen "Non HDMI devices."
Salesman: "Scart?"
Sinchen: "Yes, Scart, Composite. Component. I need to connect my (S)NES, PlayStation 1, VHS recorder, Wii and so on "
Salesmen: (relieved) "We have an adapter."
Sinchen "Does it introduce lag?"
Salesman: "What!?"
Sinchen: "Does it introduce lag? You know: If I play NES games requiring pixel perfect jumps and this introduces some milliseconds delay, the game is unplayable."
Salesman: "I'm not a gamer. No idea what you mean. It is not a passive adapter. It is an active converter. Probably not instantaneously. But that doesn't matter." (No shit, Sherlock! Analoge signals have to be converted to HDMI)"
Sinchen: "It doesn't matter for watching VHS, but for gaming."
Saleman: *TILT* "I'm not a gamer."
Sinchen: "Even my year 2012 plasma TV has a game mode. For that reason." (And it is impossible to play on this TV without game mode!!)
Salesman: "Yeah. All our TVs have a game mode!"
Sinchen: "See. Because of not introducing lag the TVs have to disable their stupid picture improvements."

I am not the only one on the whole wide world wanting just a huge monitor. A monitor that starts up in two seconds and just does the one job: Show video signals.
I don't want to have a bunch of "You don't have to use it" (but you will press it anyway accidentally nonstop) buttons for Netflix, Disney, YouTube, Amazon…

Go to hell, TV makers. I want a TV, not a Televisor! You want people to connect their devices to the internet. There will be privacy problems (the guy told me there was not a single model without microphone left). The industry wants this. Not "all the customers" - at least not actively or consciously.

No, I will not buy a digital signage monitor 10 times as expensive as a consumer TV. That is no alternative.

That was a problem I've had somewhat recently as well. Your best bet is to check on reddit what TVs allow you to disable the smart features, and then do that in addition to completely blocking the thing from connecting to the internet via your wifi access point.
In my case my cheap and shitty LG TV has an option to disable the smart features completely which effectively turns it into a proper stupid TV. I still technically pay for the hardware, but that's about 20 bucks at most.

As for inputs, almost all modern TVs that have analog inputs are high-latency and low quality analog to digital converters. If you want to use your old consoles on a modern TV you will have to use something like a Retrotink or OSSC, or mod them for native HDMI out. The analog inputs are effectively all optimized for video playback and not video gaming, and you most certainly can't change that.

Also if you do end up settling on a TV be sure to turn on game mode for the hdmi ports as well, otherwise they will all have increased latency.

I love the picture quality on my TV, it has 120hz support, it's a great TV overall. But oh my gosh it can't disable voice commands and it will CONSTANTLY turn on, thinking it hears, "hey Google" when someone instead said, "orange".

I have a LG smart TV and have zero issues with it. As for your points @KleinesSinchen

  • YouTube app has never crashed once and I use it all the time
  • Netflix works perfectly use it all the time.
  • TV gets updates at least once ever two or three months
  • Fast any time I select anything
  • Have never used the internet browser as have zero need to so can't comment on that.

"You don't have to use it."
You kinda do when it forces ads in your face first thing every time you turn it on, and you have to look at said ads to navigate to the right source.
@DBlaze Those are also starting to come with smart features nowadays.

Personally, I got a Shield TV to go with my TV, because Android TV/Google TV is so much better than that Tizen crap Samsung puts on their smart TVs. It actually has apps that aren't streaming services (such as Kodi, file browsers, plain VLC for playing your local content, even emulators and Steam Link), you can sideload apps (including ad free YouTube apps)
Doesn't solve the problem of forced ads, but it does pretty much everything I need.

At my retail job, I do encounter people who WANT a Smart TV and that it has XYZ service.

Once had some old bat who demanded a "Now TV TV", "Now TV" is a streaming service who at one point produced devices to allow access to their service and a few others, but she was INSISTENT that her friend had a non-existent Now TV branded TV. 'Fortunately' I was able to convince them of an alternative set that does what they want which actually exists for ~£200+.....even though I told them they could add Now TV via a stick for £20.

Even my parents were bad, preferring the 'convenience'/ aesthetics of an AIO Smart TV over a TV and a Fire Stick. They're currently on their second Smart TV because the first was ridiculously slow.

Personally, my philosophy is 'buy a good TV first, smart TV second, since the latter can usually be added later'.

I have a few Smart TVs, but I usually ignore their smart functionality and just use a separate device. I also use old Harmony remotes so the 'shortcut' buttons aren't an issue. I've never had any issues with my Smart TVs this way.

I don't have this issue (LG, Samsung and Hisense), although they're also disconnected from the internet.

You can also avoid ads on the Shield TV interface by replacing the launcher, I just have links to the apps I want and that's it.

@DBlaze 🤦‍♀️ Think again.
@RAHelllord The analog inputs on my plasma TV work fine with no noticeable latency and excellent picture quality.
As for the WiFi blocking: I don't even use WiFi (and it hardly works for more than two meters of direct sight – don't put a sheet of paper in between). There is nothing to block. I would not even allow a TV to connect to the internet.
@AmandaRose Good for you if your TV (still) works fine with the "smart" stuff. But… these are NOT my points. These are things I got to hear multiple times from different people.
@Chary @The Real Jdbye Google infected devices (including phones!) are a big no-no. Nothing more I can say.
@tech3475 Never said nobody wants this. Salespersons often pretend *everybody* actively wants it… and that is nonsense.

Your plasma TV is probably doing a lot less post processing than modern android based TVs. I have an LG 4k from 2019 and when using the analog inputs I can press A and release it before Mario on SMB on my original NES leaves the ground. It's not unplayable but it's very noticeable. Using a retrotink 5x pro and having game mode on the HDMI inputs enabled makes it effectively instantly that he jumps the moment I press the button.

Can't say I ever had problems with wifi range, but the access points I buy are from AVM and they've always used good chips and goot antennas to get proper coverage. But effectively if you don't connect the thing to the internet ever all the spy hardware and software won't matter anyway. You could even go so far as to unplug the wifi antenna internally, I think in a lot of models it's a separate daughter board you can just unplug, or the antenna is one of those push wires like you find in almost all laptops.

That goes off-topic, but anyway; I've tried to more or less no avail:
  • Cheap routers / access points 👎
  • Fritz!Box / AVM stuff 👎
  • Various laptops, phones, (3)DS(i), Wii(U), tablets 👎
  • Various Repeaters 👎
What worked stable for months at full speed (what is considered full speed for WiFi means roughly a fourth – at best – of the "up to" number printed on the package) beyond two or three meters?
  • Cheap outdoor access point looking directly to another outdoor access point 20 meters across the street bridging the gap between two networks 👍
Pretty short list for working WiFi, huh?
The complete wireless technology ceases to work once I want to use it. That goes as far as situations when people told me the same as @AmandaRose above for her smart TV: "Never had problems; mine is working fine!" Once I came near… forget it. WiFi signal drops. Wireless keyboard fails. Wireless mouse fails. Bluetooth phone to speaker: two meters at best. If I step in between → Connection lost. The wireless devices hate me - and the feeling is mutual

Wait a moment. For some reason Wii Remote works and same for Wii U Gamepad. But those do have short distance and nothing in between anyway.

Won't get updates if it's not connected though (literally the only reason I have my Samsung connected to the Internet)
Sometimes, those updates do add stuff that matters (like how I can now do VRR over HDMI 2.0 as well as 4K120 with YUV420, neither of which I was able to do when I got this TV)

It's the lesser of the evils IMO.

I just plug them in every so often via ethernet.

You probably just emit interfering signals sinchen. You might want to get that checked, I'm pretty sure humans aren't supposed to be emitting radio waves on that frequency. :D

i've had a couple of roku based TVs that had a "gaming mode" that made the input lag even worse, but giving you "better picture quality"

smh

Yes,I totally agree - Smart TVs are SHIT.😡

Why I must "throw away" a 12 Year young LG LCD TV with brilliant Picture ?
The Apps are no longer supported or crashing....
Like this Android Shit (Devices)...
Why no Updates ?
The TV is working without any Issues when I use KODI via Fire Stick.
Why is KODI not supporting SMART TVs with WEBOS ? Because they are Shit ?
What is so SMART on this TV Devices ?
That they say after 10 Years "Go and fuck yourself ?"

Why I cannot use this so awesome JOYN APP on this SMART TV ? Too old ? No,to SMART......go and fuck yourself...

I would love to know why most modern TVs get rid of composite/AV Cables. I recently bought two and they didn't have them on it! (An adapter would be nice, but I don't know which one to get)
Because they're only useful for older game consoles and DVD players. As far as they're concerned that's outdated technology.

It's unfortunate but people will have to start using hardware scalers eventually. I'm lucky my smart TV is a few years old so it still has analogue inputs.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze

    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
