Trouble with SecuROM Playing Mad (but not playing game)

Two years ago I got this DVD with a nice metal packaging and manual (serial number on back of manual – obviously not on the picture) for a few cent.

Naive LittleSinchen thought:
  • I have a readable, perfect condition original DVD ✅
    • SecuROM density variations measured ✅
  • I have a valid original serial number ✅
Everything okay? How about
  • Play game? ❌
It installs slowly and… surprised me with the urge to connect to the internet for activation. Denied it (no Ethernet cable inserted) and the installer removed everything it had created. That had left me waiting for minutes for getting… nothing.

Great!

I've just found this thing in a moving box again after pushing it away mentally for said two years. Not looked up if:
A) SecuROM servers are still online and would activate (and if my serial is not banned or overused)… and honestly I don't want it to connect anywhere.
B) this can be circumvented with a crack (probably killing setup with Task Manager right before it can delete stuff)

If anybody knows how to deal this (other than playing Frisbee with the DVD while repeatedly jumping on the metal case and ripping the manual to confetti) I would be thankful.
Disc based only SecuROM is already a pain in the a.. – but this is ridiculous.

games for windows is bullshit in general
No idea. It is the only one I have with this logo and was part of a bigger package (as most cheap stuff I bought).
Right now there are complete boxes full of music CDs video DVDs on the flea market… 'cause you know… streaming-shit rules!
I might start stocking up on random stuff if the prices drop a little further.

Problem with (limited number) activation is that I regularly reset the Windows XP computer from a backup image containing only the bare minimum software and NO copy protection drivers.

Consequence:
And I guess you need to download a crack just to play your own legally owned game....

Didn't find any official patch removing the protection with a brief search yesterday. Come on… this thing is old… remove the activation already!
It would not be surprising if the "solution" would be buying the game again on some stupid digital distribution platform such as Gaseous Water.
