Favourite games

for ease of my mind, I want to make a list of my favorite games. They're in no particular order. I also include the platform I played of them (not where I played them, but the platform, even if it was emulated). Only played Wii and Switch on actual hardware (Also GameCube thanks to Wii retrocompat).

  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1)
  • Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA)
  • Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS)
  • Tales of Symphonia (GameCube)
  • Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
  • Muramasa: The Demon Blade (Wii)
  • Dead Cells
  • Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii)
  • Zelda: Wind Waker (GameCube)
  • Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (GameCube)
  • Castlevania: Lords of Shadows - Mirror of Fate (3DS)
  • Castlevania: Dracula X (SNES)
  • Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 (PC) I loved the protagonist of this game!
What would you add based on these?

Do you agree/disagree with some?

No old games?
Hard to find (legally) for an attractive price: Castlevania I, II, III for NES. Frustration over the brutal difficulty of part III included. No, cheats and emulators with save states don't count as playing/beating that game.

3D Zelda games but not Ocarina of Time? Are you suffering from the stupid "has not aged well"-fad associated with early 3D games? In this case the 3DS version might be more attractive (fine thing with 3D screen)

No 2D Mario titles? Super Mario World?

never played Ocarina of Time. my first Zelda was Twilight Princess. it's not that i don't like OoT, but I haven't played It. I really want to play it, but I haven't gotten a 3DS, while It works on citra, that's a game i would like to play on actual hardware.

also, i didn't like BOTW, but that could be because i tried playing It using CEMU and my PC wasn't as capable, It ran like at 14 fps. but watching Let's Plays also don't make me want to play it at all.

i've played all castlevanias i know, including the NES games (haven't finished III, yeah), but they aren't my favorite ones. maybe it's that thing you mentioned about "has not aged well"-fad, but while i enjoyed them, I preferred the entries i posted, way, way, more. I mean, my first castlevania was Aria of Sorrow, so maybe there's also a nostalgic component. I also like a lot the castlevania fighting game they released on Wii. and order of ecclesia was close to make It to this list.

haven't played any 2D Mario titles. Like never. Only played Galaxy 1 and 2. then played a bit of sunshine, but could never get past 2 hours of playing It. the only 2D Mario i've played are the 2D sections in Mario Odyssey, which I recently beat. I'll try to check on Super Mario World, but somehow i don't seem to like the idea of 2D Mario.

I personally do not enjoy RPGs... I used to play Pokemon Crystal and Emerald a lot but not anymore, I see you're playing many of them, which is not bad, but to me, RPGs are the same. Literally have no patience and I do not like that "winning" (progressing) is determined by luck or dumb stats.

I would throw more action games onto your list, like Metroid Prime, even Fusion or Super. All of them good and thrilling.

Zelda Wind Waker is so old now, that I'd gladly switch it over Twilight anytime. But again, I've played Twilight so many times now that it doesn't exites me anymore. So gameboy Zeldas needs to be in your list, specially Oracle of Seasons. Peak Zelda in my opinion.

And if I may suggest RPGs oriented in action (you win with skill, not with luck) try Dragon View, Brainlord and Seiken Densetsu 3, all of them for SNES.

You need Puzzle games there too.
Pokemon Puzzle League for the N64, Zooo for GBA, Bejeweled 3 for DS, Lost Winds 2 in WiiWare, Bust-A-Move 3DX and Bust-A-Move Plus are all amazing.

There's also fighting games, and you can't go wrong with Street Fighter 2 - The New Challengers, Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Capcom vs SNK 2, KOF 99, KOF 2001 and KOF 2003. Waku Waku 7 is good too. Rage of the Dragon and Guilty Gear are a bit too technical for my enjoyment, but still play them regularly.

Racing games that can be enjoyable solo, of course, Mario Kart with the exception of Super Circuit. Double Dash is very good if you can get past the fact that you can't jump. I love the skill development you need to win Mario Kart Wii, and I haven't played 8, but I assume it's good.
Need for Speed Undercover 2 and Underground 2, alongside Most Wanted are excellent.
Crash Nitro Circuit, Diddy Kong Racing and Pac-Man World Rally are good party games.
That said, I too love R: Racing Evolution and Ridge Racer for their technicality and skill involved to win.

I don't normally touch Indies because all are the same bullshit, but I can't recommended enough Cave Story in any platform. Truly great despite all these years.

As for platformers, I prefer Donkey Kong Country over Mario, and theres a lot of hidden gems in the 16 bit era.

Beat-em-Ups, many arcade ones, many 16 bit era... the list is long. But do yourself a favor and play Final Fight 2 with someone else and Undercover Cops. Brawl Brothers is also one of my favorites but it seems I'm alone in that one. TMNT Turtles in Time is good too.

Damn... so many good games and memories 🤔

EDIT: Metal Slug 1, 2, 3 and 7 too!

Thanks. I'll add my comment about which I liked and which I didn't.

Mother Is a no for me. I couldn't stand Earthbound for some reason when I tried It.

Wait, SNES or NES? Either way, Mother 3 is still good and sometimes, it’s all about the music.

There are a few games that I’ll “play” I just listen to the soundtrack to think. 2064 R O M is a great example (also the same guy who did the soundtrack to Bombrush Cyber Funk) (great games, too)

This is also a good example:

Wish they’d have given us a new/HD version to go with BMR 2; still happy.

BTW, try overloading yourself by letting the music of one game play, while you play another—it’s like a peanut butter & pickle sandwich, weird until you try it, but great once you perfect it.
