What are your experiences with local stores (service, friendliness)?

==========
Yes, blogs here go more or less unnoticed, but this really does not belong into a thread (personal story).
But I would be happy to get some comments on this. Do you agree on general the problem below? Do you have similar stories? Totally disagree and think I'm insane?

==========

Right now I’m depressed because of local “brick and mortar” stores being unbearable. This might be specific for my location¹ (Germany, the service wasteland). My own experiences with personnel in retail stores are problematic at best. Especially huge chain stores often have the most unfriendly (and sometimes incompetent for their field) staff.
The way they talk to customers (condescending/arrogant, annoyed/bugged up to outright impudent) is just not the way how to treat those, who bring the money.

Is that a reason to become depressed? Oh, yes! Because there always have been very positive exceptions! Most notably the little computer store I have been a regular customer for 20 years now. I have bought most of my PCs, many peripherals and little things there and even recommended people going there (or just asked them for the money and bought things for them myself).

I never had a problem paying slightly more than on some cheap online shop. The guys there were friendly, talkative and often even funny. Being there was almost entertaining sometimes. They searched the web for me finding stuff after just roughly describing my wishes – in short: Perfect service!
Sinchen: “I need a real hardware RAID controller for four SATA, non SAS HDDs with perfect Linux support.”
Shop Service: “We don’t support Linux and can’t help you with that OS, but we will get you something.”
A day later they phoned, I went there and they had done a great job at researching the topic. Two days later the controller arrived with the wrong cable… and they started discussing with the distributor, who seemingly was unwilling to provide the correct cable.

Defective laptop battery after 6 weeks and manufacturer didn’t want to to replace. Manufacturer told me the retailer should claim warranty (can’t be done otherwise) and told the retailer I should claim warranty (can’t be done otherwise).
Well. I did not have to phone and mail and whatnot. Got a new battery shortly after.

Sinchen: “Need a laptop for a nine-year-old. For once price is the most important factor. Don’t know what is a good thing right now.”
Shop Owner: “Let me see” *goes through lists*
Sinchen: *Hands over printed offer from cheap online shop* (notebooksbilliger.de)
Owner: “Not a bad model. This one still comes with HDD. Let me see if I find that model with SSD and no Microsoft Windows preinstalled.” (he remembered I only do Linux)
He found it. With SSD and no Windows. Almost the same price as the discounter. Even with a DVD writer installed which was already more or less impossible at that point.

I could go on and on like this.

Today I went there and experienced the complete opposite: Might as well have been in a big chain store. Didn’t know the man and he was aggressive right after the “Good morning”. One of the most unpleasant talks I ever had when about to buy something expensive. I left the shop after a few minutes of getting every sentence I tried to say interrupted for no reason.
Strangely enough the shop was completely empty – no other customers and no employees. Okay, it is not a huge business, but there always had been at least two service/sales persons and the shop was hardly deserted of any customers.

My plan was using the phone on Monday trying to talk to the owner, who I know for 20 years – politely telling him the story above. I opened the website… and noticed the owner had changed. The nice guy I knew probably sold his reputable shop and I might have talked with the new owner without noticing. Well shit! No more easy buying computer stuff without web research and risking to buy at the wrong place.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Everything is shit these days. Shit slides downhill and thus, we’re either swimming in it or cleaning it up. Even if you don’t notice it, you’ll still smell it.

Personally, I return the energy I get: treat me shitty, I’ll bust your balls; work with me and I work with you.

All in all, people do have problems in life and we can’t all “leave our problems at the door”…but we do need to survive.
Sometimes, you’ve gotta do what you gotta do.

Did you try asking the person what was going on in their day? Maybe you could have been a light to expunge their darkness and if you didn’t try, maybe you held up their notion of humans being shit.

On the upside, it could have been worse; man could have farted and made you stand in it.

Normally I don't make it so easy for myself and say "It used to be better, now everything sucks..."

But yes, unfortunately (after a number of "not so nice" experiences in the last few days) I have to agree with the previous speaker @H1B1Esquire 100%... everything IS shit in stores these days...

Where....

Thank God there are still “rays of hope” in this desert every now and then.....and these make me happy and make “Shopping” an experience...sometimes...

No, I didn't ask. Why should I? "Put yourself into the other person's shoes" and the like? What is he feeling? Why is he in bad mood? No, thanks.
I'm not his therapist. In business, you behave decently towards customers. If you can't do that for some reasons in your personal life (which ca happen for many, many reasons), you are unable to work and have to take sick leave.
It is a question of fairness and symmetry. Why should I have understanding for some other person's current situation making him unable to behave like he should, when nobody in the whole wide world gives a d*mn on my feelings and situation.

That is why this was particularly depressing. That was one of the rare shops where the experience was guaranteed to be good.

That does not sound good (coming from YOU)

Leaving the shopping topic:
Alex, I got to know you as the most positive person I've ever encountered. So much of that "positivity" stuff that it was almost unbelievable. You initial posts in our PM made me instantly think of the Pollyanna books. Not that I was ever convinced by this positivity stuff (there is much to criticize on that approach), but YOU seemed to be convinced. And now you are relativizing this attitude.
A brutalization of customs has taken place in the last few years. The whole pandemic stuff acted like a chemical catalyst: Accelerating the inevitable while not being the real cause of things. The damage this caused is not going away anymore. (Western) society has been shot to pieces (in figurative sense) and now we are facing our demise.
The fools' ship has hit the reef (or the iceberg) and is now sinking faster and faster.

I care 😢

I’m on the side of, “how can you ask something of someone you aren’t willing to do?”, but I’m also on the side of, “get what you give”.

Best I can say to you: try something new.
Foods, shops, & attitudes.

Shit changes everyday and people die everyday. Taxes change too, but the dates usually stay the same—go sideways-figure eight 🤷♾️

Absolutely correct,my dear Sinchen.❤️😉

For THAT Topic, the "Train has left".....
Reduced to one, maybe 2 Stores (for Daily Needs) for me the "Shopping in Stores" Life is near over.

- unfriendly, uncouth, foreign-speaking (auxiliary) staff, as the specialists no longer feel like working.
- Prices that make you "reach the ceiling"
- Staff who have no interest in sales or customer information discussions, incompetent, disinterested and ignorant.

makes it very, very hard to go into a Store and have a nice "Shoppingexperience".....

Since 2021 using Amazon.....and that´s still my favorite,pricefriendly,competent,friendly and very,very helpful Store.❤️😉

Totally agree.
