A rant about diablo & diablo 2

And it led me into thinking about you guessed it...diablo 1 one of the best hack n slash titles con-sieved and both highly rated as well as highly overrated depending on who you ask. So I finaly decided to post my first blog, so don't hate =).

and here it goes...a little long winded and maybe a little to many run on sentences but i'm sure those interested will get the point...
and look further into the implications it could suggest?

Diablo was originally designed for the PC and is stilled played by a few people, maybe not so much anymore and probably not well suited for the younger halo, Pokemon battle arena kids that think tricked out graphics are Superior in everyway to anything not so new and don't understand or appreciate the fine subtle qualities this game brought with it... a easy hack in slash game role playing game that is enormously mind numbing and relaxing for some, just a good way to kill time with some friends or alone, after a hard day of work or whatever. Diablo 2 was a true quality sequel that made the game live on way past its estimated replay value and life span and I would say its safe to call a classic. Just like pong, mario, sonic, doom, tetris, diablo. Its a staple for some people and that being said.

I would love to see Diablo 1 & Diablo II ported to the Wii, Playstation, What ever have you, whatever blizzard wants to do...

I can actually see a 360 version before anything else due to the nature of the XNA tool kit and relationship to DirectX, but that beside the point.

If Blizzard really wanted to nothing is stopping them from open sourcing diablo 1.Just like Doom and the ID tech demos that get released by John Carmak, Blizzard could do it to, or just port the damn things to other consoles (not likely given there current status and track record and strict stance on IP and Copyright Law I am sure they are scared of the GPL and why wouldn't they be, they are rich bastards with lawyers and big risk with to much IP exchanging hands) (even more less likely since the merger with Activison).

Now seeing the current state of emulation on the Nintendo Wii is slightly more mature than a year ago and we now have good working snes, gba, nes sega consoles and other high profile consoles have been emulated including if not limited to Playstation and N64 emulation (even though they are far from being pefrect) it goes to show people will goto great lengths to preserve something they enjoy... classic gaming.

Playing the backup version of Diablo 1 for the PS1 plays sloppy in WiiSX. A emulator that is based off of pcpsx originally written for windows that has been open sourced then ported again to make use of PPC processors like the 750 G3 apple processor (like the Wii processor the 750gx or something) and that port is called pcpsx-df then taken by a person called emukidd and the rest is history. WiiSx was released...and can run many games (just check the bottom of my sig for more info) And Thanks to member GuildMcCommunist for stating the Compatibility wiki soon after release. anyway as I was saying, Playing a native build or a copy that runs at full speed would be amazing with some revamped contols even if network play wasn't available.

So I'm hoping for some improvements in emulation terms... Maybe WineX can be ported to ppc 750x machine code and we can run directX applications ;) I know far fetched but would be cool lol.

Moving and navigation is trivial and can be quite simple if not novel for the wii controller. The Playstation 1 controller was suitable for Diablo 1 and it played and opertated fine I thought the controllers couldnt be tighter for a game that was orginally meant to be played with a keyboard and mouse. I played it and enjoyed it and the two player mode was a delight with my brother when I used to play it on a real PS1 around 1996-1997.

Movement is simple...yet at first glance may seem impractical but not impossible to pull off correctly. But with a little refinement and innovative ideas i believe a tight game play control scheme can be reinvented and breath a little extra life into the diablo franchise.

D pad for battle navigation, Accelerometer/Motion sensor would also activate a bound/binded spell or run / walk (think mario kart tilt forward to accelerate and backwards to decelerate). and 1 or 2 Buttons attack, or cast spells the + key opens character status menu, the - key opens inventory. Hold B and press 1 or 2 buttons to cast spell / use belt potion red pot, mana, scroll, fulmination potion, whatever.

Wiimote could also point at a destination on screen such as doors, traps, enemies, shrines, pots items, pop up hints and or start a trade with another player, pick up armor and items in storage / grid inventory.

Navigating Towns and dungeons would be used with the D-Pad and or Tilt Controls for running walking.

Gestures can be recorded to cast spells, use belt, switch weapons, etc...

Wii only options for accessibility and controller scheme reasons would allow an item to be auto item picked up and stored in inventory, auto sort storage to conserve space

Obviously nothing will beat a keyboard when it comes to playing diablo 2 but a casusle gameplay experience can be achieved with a new controller scheme and the ability to break away from a pc monitor to watch it on a tv in the living room of your friends neighbors house...

The user friendy experience is key for it to play and feel right, to fit in as a Wii title...detail to how movement feels needs to be scrutinized so playing from a wiimote holds no disadvange to the keyboard and mouse user.

A extra menu with item sort feature borrowed from chocobo dungeon would help the user friendly navigation and slashing.
Just thrust wii mote slightly and it will auto sort your item list a extra view (non inventory view and more like a list).

While in the item list the + and - button will equip / unequipped armors and button B or button 2 will close window. For extra convenience armors and weapons can be hot keyed to Wiimote gestures or key press combo like pressing 1 1 2 A or 2 2 1 A in a timed order to switch equipment on the fly or cast spell. (almost like a combo from MK or Tekken) as not to interfere with battling a tough crowed of Doom Knights and Succubus throwing fucking red fire balls towards your way. Obviously there is holes in this control scheme but i believe it would work none the less. But the wii has TWO USB ports keyboard and mouse for original play style anyone?

B.net would be preserved and it could add a whole new dimension to the game-play and hardcore mode could get a little more interesting on a console...,

A Wii lobby could set up duels with friends and trade windows and then the diablo 2 Wii client could also post messages to the Wii message board to inform you of ladder information, friend requests, important world events like a Uber Diablo spotted and auto log into guild and trade channels.

Also utilizing Wiispeak so players can shout orders to a group a friends like... squelch a person you hate and PK the leaching sonz of bitch later.

I had more ideas about my silly idea but my browser crashed and so i wrote this version of what was on my mind quick-like.
diabl is for psx but not 2 but it nothing compared to the pc version though
an argument could be made that the PSX version was inferior to the PC version but that not the point.
the point is the PSX offered a different kind of gameplay experience separate than the one experienced on the pc.

In addition the controls for the PSX where tight and good for a keyboard controlled game to run with limited Joystick configuration. They made it work well IMHO. and was still fun to play...And I could see D2 working just fine with a PSX controller. Yes it will play differently than a keyboard variant but again that's not the point.

case in point when blizzard ported starcraft to the N64, it played different and blizzard hated and since never revisted it
however I'm sure someone enjoyed it for what the new game play style experience had to offer. a Novel controller scheme
and a way to break away from a pc monitor/ laptop to the TV for a NORMAL consumer.

I played Diablo 2: LoD last week, as I was playing Titan Quest and I suddenly got the urge to play Diablo 2 as well.

After a quarter way through act 1, I uninstalled it. So port or no port, Diablo 2's dead to me now.

And my Fable/Sacred experiences on consoles tell me that I have no interest in playing PC-first RPGs on consoles.

If a port were made, the only period that can actually generate profit would be just before Diablo 3's release when people would be so sick of waiting they'd play D2.

if they made a port to a console, it would completely suprise me. i dont see how the buttons would really be set up so great, and seeing as how if it were to have any multiplayer, it wouldnt be nearly as fast paced as it is on the pc. the mouse and keyboard combination is just much more effecient than a controller. imagine tapping X repeatidly to attack a monster, while using your left joystick to click a potion, then some other button to use it, and then your right bumper to switch skills to whirlwind, then once you do you have to press Y once so whirlwind activates.

Seems much more complicated compared to the pc version eh?
