My first blog post, and hopefully it won't be my last.
Anyways, I'm still playing Pokemon HeartGold despite the fact that it's been over one month since its release, I just captured the Snorlax blocking the entrance to Diglett's Cave, and decided to procrastinate further by venturing inside said cave. Since I'm EV training my pokemon the good old fashioned way, my HM slave Furret (nicknamed Snuggle) is leading my team to take care of any Digletts that I encounter while walking. I could have used a repel to avoid any and all pokemon, but since I wanted to capture a Diglett and hopefully a Dugtrio, I didn't use any.
I'm almost halfway through the cave and oddly enough I haven't encountered any Digletts or Dugtrios, I take a few more steps and finally a Diglett shows up, but there's something weird about this Diglett, I stare at it for a couple of seconds and that's when I notice what's so odd about it, it has a blue nose. The spiraling stars show up confirming what I just realized, it's a shiny Diglett! Now, I know that Pokesav has rendered shiny pokemon virtually ordinary, and although I'm an avid Pokesav user, I still condemn people that use it to make shiny pokemon, and besides I've never encountered a shiny pokemon before so I'm naturally excited about it.
But there's just one problem, the Diglett that I encounter is level 15, while my Furret is level 37, and since it's my HM slave, it knows the moves: Cut, Strength, Rock Smash, and Whirlpool. I quickly realize that if I were to use Cut, Strenght, or even Rock Smash I would probably make the Diglett faint, my only option was to use Whirlpool, the weakest move. I know what you're thinking, why didn't you just switch to another pokemon? Well, all the other pokemon on my team were around level 55 and none of them knew any moves like False Swipe, nor any status inducing moves for that matter, and besides there was the possibility that the Diglett had the Sand Trap ability, making any attempt to switch out futile.
I do realize that since Diglett is a ground type pokemon, it's weak to water type moves, but Whirlpool was the only move that I could use without it fainting on the first turn. So with my fingers crossed I use Whirlpool hoping that it won't be strong enough to make the Diglett faint. Whirlpool hits... and BAM! Diglett is barely alive, but then another realization dawns on me, Whirlpool traps the target pokemon from 2-5 turns, meaning that before I could throw a pokeball at the weakened Diglett, Whirlpool would strike again.
"DIGLETT is trapped in the vortex," read the words on the screen. At this point I think of all the other options I had... Idiot! I could have just kept on throwing pokeballs without battling it! How come I didn't just do that!? My "pokemon trainer" instinct was what made me attack it first to weaken it before throwing any pokeballs at it, in any event it was too late for that. Whirlpool hit again...and what I assume is only 1 HP is left of Diglett! This is the moment of truth if I didn't catch it in this turn, the Diglett wouldn't survive another Whirlpool. I browse through my bag looking for a Duskball just to be on the safe side, but I didn't have any! I had used them to catch Suicune on Route 25 the night before, and the few remaining I used them on Snorlax (it was being a really pain in the ass to catch).
I throw a regular pokeball at the shiny Diglett, the pokeball shakes once, twice, thrice, and the rest is history.
