So, yeah, I'm not good at starting to write, but here goes.
Last year, I was kicked out of my parents house (just turned 18 at the time), and was staying with my girlfriend's parents until January. Yeah, I know, it was horribly disrespectful, it was bad, it provided a ton of stress on my relationship - that's something I don't need a lecture on . But, I was looking for a job. In fact, that's the reason I was kicked out of my house: I couldn't find a job given the one month deadline that was set. Anyway, I ended up twisting my parents' arms to let me back for Christmas (really, more of a present for my girlfriend's parents, knowing that it would probably very well sacrifice my well-being).
So here I am, in June 2010. I've been looking for a job since June 2009, applying in-store everywhere I found and checking online job boards hourly, applying to anything that I'm anywhere near qualified for, which, evidently, is nothing. I have a resumé that stresses my strong points and qualifications (I even ran it by a professional - I'm assuming that the lack of work experience is what's killing me; I have been using my nice professors as references), I have a free schedule, and I'm willing to work for minimum wage. Throughout the past year, I have had the following interviews, in no particular order:
That's right. 6. I apply to every single job in my city, and I get 6 interviews in one year. That's 1/2 of an interview per month. And not a single employer thinks I'm worthy. (For the record, I have been applying to fast food places as well, they just seem to not want me).
I dress for the interview with dress shoes, a business shirt (with undershirt), dress pants, my glasses (duh). I tie my hair back. I shave my beard. (That probably wouldn't be the problem anyway, or else I would have gotten more than 6 interviews, no?)
Anyway, to the end of my story. My parents have decided that they are moving to a city that, apart from being a place that my girlfriend doesn't live, does not have a college campus for miles. So, in order to...have a roof over my head, I have to rent a room. Rooms (shared) rent around here for, at lowest, about $500 per month including utilities. By my calculations, that's about 20 hours per week at minimum wage, a little more (I accounted 15% for taxes). Then food, adding $100 per month (not the richest diet, but livable). $600 per month, divided by 4 weeks, $150 per week. 150 divided by minimum wage-taxes (about 6.25), 24 hours per week. That's doable, of course, and I have no problem with that (I'm a student, and while full time is not an impossibility, and I do include full-time positions in my job hunt, it is not ideal). That, of course, is with no insurance, no transportation, and no spending money. Not that any of that matters if I can't find a job within about one month, anyway.
Just thought that I would share. Feel free to tl;dr
