Sigh...At the end of my rope

So, yeah, I'm not good at starting to write, but here goes.

Last year, I was kicked out of my parents house (just turned 18 at the time), and was staying with my girlfriend's parents until January. Yeah, I know, it was horribly disrespectful, it was bad, it provided a ton of stress on my relationship - that's something I don't need a lecture on  . But, I was looking for a job. In fact, that's the reason I was kicked out of my house: I couldn't find a job given the one month deadline that was set. Anyway, I ended up twisting my parents' arms to let me back for Christmas (really, more of a present for my girlfriend's parents, knowing that it would probably very well sacrifice my well-being).

So here I am, in June 2010. I've been looking for a job since June 2009, applying in-store everywhere I found and checking online job boards hourly, applying to anything that I'm anywhere near qualified for, which, evidently, is nothing. I have a resumé that stresses my strong points and qualifications (I even ran it by a professional - I'm assuming that the lack of work experience is what's killing me; I have been using my nice professors as references), I have a free schedule, and I'm willing to work for minimum wage. Throughout the past year, I have had the following interviews, in no particular order:

  1. Walmart
  2. Walgreens
  3. Picture People
  4. Sears (Even though no one at the store decided to write down that I had an interview, even after calling to check
  5. Finish Line
  6. Vector Marketing Scam
That's right. 6. I apply to every single job in my city, and I get 6 interviews in one year. That's 1/2 of an interview per month. And not a single employer thinks I'm worthy. (For the record, I have been applying to fast food places as well, they just seem to not want me).

I dress for the interview with dress shoes, a business shirt (with undershirt), dress pants, my glasses (duh). I tie my hair back. I shave my beard. (That probably wouldn't be the problem anyway, or else I would have gotten more than 6 interviews, no?)

Anyway, to the end of my story. My parents have decided that they are moving to a city that, apart from being a place that my girlfriend doesn't live, does not have a college campus for miles. So, in order to...have a roof over my head, I have to rent a room. Rooms (shared) rent around here for, at lowest, about $500 per month including utilities. By my calculations, that's about 20 hours per week at minimum wage, a little more (I accounted 15% for taxes). Then food, adding $100 per month (not the richest diet, but livable). $600 per month, divided by 4 weeks, $150 per week. 150 divided by minimum wage-taxes (about 6.25), 24 hours per week. That's doable, of course, and I have no problem with that (I'm a student, and while full time is not an impossibility, and I do include full-time positions in my job hunt, it is not ideal). That, of course, is with no insurance, no transportation, and no spending money. Not that any of that matters if I can't find a job within about one month, anyway.

Just thought that I would share. Feel free to tl;dr

Seriously, though, I hope you get the job. Luckily, I'm 15 and don't have to worry to much about it.

Do you look the interviewer in the eyes ? They get off on that shit. Also don't have any negative shit on your application, lie your ass off they aint gonna go CSI on your ass

Don't even try to give ME that advice. I can't lie or even look anyone in the eye.

Yeah its hard to find one. Tomorrow I have my first interview in 2 years. Do you call the places you apply a few days after you apply? That helps a little. Try and get one through somebody you know. Every little thing helps

Hmm.
I don't know, I think you should shave and cut your hair, it'd make you more.. presentable? I guess.
But what do I know, I'm 16 and never had a job.

i have had two job interviews ever, got the 2nd one and am still working there
luckilly the pay's nice and it's not a shit job so i'm content :D

You seem to try to be TOO professional. Sure, it's good to be professional, but if you're applying to fast food restaurants, you don't want to look like you're going to work at a big business where you sit at a cubicle all day. Be casual, but don't be too laid back. You have to show them you want the job and you're willing to work efficiently for them. I've had one job (McDonald's...XD), and even though the interview went smooth and everything, I was worried I would screw it up for a few reasons:

1) My hair was medium length and not cut cleanly.
2) I didn't act very social. I seemed really uptight and nervous. Sure, it's going to happen in any situation like that, but you can't let it show too much.
3) I didn't have an answer to every question the interviewer asked me. Some questions were important, others weren't as much. I wasn't really prepared, and even though I got the job, I could've done it better.

There are tons of other people that are willing to work for companies, so you have to show them you are the best one for the job. Be positive, calm, and do a little research on the company...I say that because employers always like it when you talk to them about their company, not just yourself.

Honestly, I learned that all in a Business Tech class last year, but it was very helpful. Another thing...If you're worried about what they will think about you, don't act like yourself. Be a new person in front of them (For the better of course). Sure, it's good to be yourself, but employers want the best, and only the best. It's sad, but true...

Well you don't seem like some unemployable idiot, I'd employ you if I had a job for you to do.
Seriously though, have you ever been told you're trying too hard? Y'know, when you want something really badly and will do anything in your power to make it happen, but it just won't! Then one day, you get sick of trying and relax for a day and the thing you've been working your backside off to get magically happens? Maybe you're in one of those situations...

Work will come your way soon, try to be, sort of indifferent about it and it will happen. I know it's stressful but stress can really damage your health and you really don't need that!

Good luck.

If you need working experience, just get a little side job at mcdonalds or something like that. You'll get some cash in, and you'll gain working experience.
I'm still under 18, but i've got a little job at dominos pizza, and it pays rather well, and you learn a lot about what's going on inside a company, which can be usefull later on.

Of course I did xD! And everyone lies on applications (the stupid online ones that do multiple choice questions). It's not good to lie about work experience, though, because they would ask for references which I, obviously, don't have.

Why is this so complicated?

Yeah, the problem is - there are no 'little side jobs'. Those are the jobs I'm applying for 99% of the time.

You'll get a job eventually. All hope is not lost.
Do you live in a big city with a lot of people? If so, there may be many other people applying for the same job.

Well, it's not about eventually :P It's about...in one month (or so), or I'm homeless

Yeah, I figure that is at least part of the problem :-/ High percentage of unemployed people in my city is one heck of a lot more people than the same percentage in, say, any city in Alaska

I wish you the best of success!

And like someelse said.... be positive ; )

Wish they would let us play the NCAA football 14 on newer xbox, its one of the only games I love and own on disc still, that is not back compatible, bs.

@BigOnYa My dad recently bought a spare Series X off of me, got game pass, and saw Madden '24 on Game Pass, decided to try it out.

@K3Nv2 He was looking into consoles for his house anyway (for my younger siblings and himself) and I had a spare XSX and Switch I ended up selling him at pretty steep cuts. I would just give them to him, but I did buy them with the intent to sell them... and college is super expensive.
