computer issues

Well as some in the chat room know, the very PC I am typing on had a computer virus problem a few days ago and it looks like by deleting the virus, it has caused the system to become stable and happy again.

Now the part that is an issue. Backing up this system and getting it ready to have the storage changed out or upgraded. Well rather upgraded to some of the latest technology anyway. It will store the same amount of data when I am done but consume a great, great deal less power. Taking out 5 drives and putting in two "green" drives should do the trick. The ordeal was trying to figure out what I already had backed up. For some really strange reason, it was causing me to become irritated, stressed, depressed or whatever so I had to take long breaks away from it. Thankfully, once I found a few large drives sitting around to take care of it each backup took 7-8 hours. So that amount of time away from the PC was a blessing each time.

Some of my blog articles mention hardships with people on the internet and stuff but things like this computer stuff are real issues. All the people I have had drama with online over the years just are totally irrelevant when something like this occupies the mind so much. It really puts into perspective PC versus morons I have chatted with online in some manner. I live with the PC here but the people are just elsewhere, not really much in material and can always be shut out. Of course the computer can also be taken to the recycling heap and chucked on there as well. Kinda makes you think for a minute doesn't it? That there's things that come up in life that just don't matter much and can be dumped out. Sometimes easier said than done but at least a PC isn't a living organism and can be replaced rather easily.

I'm just amazed that a project like this can consume so much of me and it isn't even something that takes a huge great deal of thought. Just kinda makes me think there's a lot more important things going on than the PC and that I spend too much time thinking about what I'm doing on these when the weather outside now is warm and sunny.

It is a valid point however, nice or not. I agree.

And the thing is I generally do back it up reguarly but it got out of hand this time around. Now it is backed up, some actually already was backed up but it is difficult and very time consuming to figure out what and where. I was getting frustrated with going through and doing all the comparing of folders so I just decided to back up the whole lot and call it done.

But now that's completely out of the way and I can take it apart finally. If any backup fails I'll just reassemble it into a different machine and do it over again. But it should be intact. The problem with backing up though is if you only make one backup set and one of the drives failed, you are screwed. Always a better idea to make at least 2 sets of backup unless you don't care about your data.

Anyway rules of thumb are backup your data in case of a security breach (back door, etc), make multiple copies, and also if you have no sets, disable your LAN until you are done to make sure punks don't screw up your PC before you have completed a full backup. Of course yeah virus scan and other security is helpful too. Most people won't disconnect their system from the net while doing this I am sure.

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
