Four more years, four more years!

(Please note that none of this is written in my capacity as a mod, this is all just personal opinion and what have you)

Well today is my four year anniversary at the 'temp! It's hard to believe I've been here four years to be honest! lol The time has flown past. I first came across the site when I was looking into options of what I could pick up for my DS. A quick Google search about the best flashcart first brought me to the site. At the time there was alot of hype for an upcoming Slot-1 cart called "R4", the only other options at the time were a Passcart/Slot-2 (or Flashme/Slot-2) combo or a cart like the DS-X.

After lurking and reading all the info coming out about the cart I was suitably impressed enough to put in an order when they came out. A week later my cart arrived from Sweden and I grabbed all the homebrew available and of course some roms. It breathed a new lease of life into my DS for which I was grateful. I joined up then but wasn't really an active member. Mostly using the site for homebrew/scene news and the odd bit of chat.

After a couple of weeks I decided that I was far too lazy to drag and drop everything to maintain saves etc. The only ROM managers available at the time were Offlinelist and Rominator. I didn't really consider Offlinelist a manager, more of a renaming utility so gave Rominator a try. I really liked Rominator, Hank is definitely a more talented guy than I am or probably will ever be, but it lacked some features that I really wanted and Hank had already said wouldn't be incorporated.

So I decided to pick up a copy of Delphi 7 and try to write my own manager. A couple of weeks later the original R4 Commander was born, and there was much rejoicing! Well, on my part anyway. lol I first posted it up on the official R4 forums, and after a little bit of testing and debugging posted it up on the 'temp along with a few other sites like Moddz, DS-Scene and some I can't mention. The response from them all was really good and I began meeting alot of great and very helpful people. Fifthelement from Moddz offered me webspace so I could host boxarts, screenshots and the like and users on the 'temp were great! The users on the 'temp offered me tips, advice and no end of help, including Hank himself.

That's really when I saw how great the community was on the 'temp. In a time where everyone was competitive, nobody really wanted to share ideas, it was cooler to harass and insult people than treat them like people the 'temp just wasn't like that. Everyone was welcoming, friendly, loved chatting about anything from what they had for tea that night to tech stuff that was and still is way over my head. The beauty was though that even when I was like "Durr, I don't really get what you mean" nobody got abusive, insulting or anything like that - they did their best to be patient and help.

After a while Moddz shut down and I lost my hosting space. I thought that was the end of R4 Commander but chuckstudios immediately offered me hosting space, hosting space that was costing him dosh but offered to me free of charge. I was grateful and within 24 hours R4 Commander was up and running again. I was still active on other sites but slowly and surely all my time started being spent on the 'temp and I made it the central hub of R4 Commander along with the other utilities I began to write.

I began using the other sections of the 'temp then and became a much more active member and realised just how many great people existed on the site! All the admins, supers and mods were friendly and would go out of their way to help. They weren't just some distant figure who was there to enforce the rules, they were (and still are!) there to make the community a fun, informative and just plain welcoming place to be. Stuff that really impressed were things like tempmas, the KYT sessions, the tempcasts and just how much everyone tried to get everyone else involved. Of course, there were twats back then who had nothing more to contribute to the community than being twats, in any on-line or even real life community they're there. They didn't usually last long on the 'temp tho, as most users just ignored them and they withered away. There were trolls obviously who stuck around, but if you were a cunt with no other purpose in life than sucking up oxygen, forum space and being a cunt then you were given the toe.

Slowly all the other forums I was using were either shut down or the community itself just went completely downhill and I eventually began spending all my time here. I loved the place. I could come here and chat about literally anything to an amazingly wide ride range of people. Not only that, community participation was actually encouraged here! A rare thing in this day and age. This in itself was enough to make me say "Yeah, this is definitely a great place to be". It's like a throwback to an era that I loved in a time when everywhere seemed to moving away from it. In all honesty it reminded of the old BBS's like Demons Forge and Flying Teapot. A place where you were encouraged to grab a beverage, pull up a seat and enjoy yourself along with everyone else. And that's exactly what I did, and lo and behold here I am still here! I've been here longer than any relationship I've ever had with a woman! lol

So that's the background for how I came to be here, and why I'm still here! Now what about my opinions? Ok, well here goes.

The admins/supers/mods - Over the years I've seen and heard loads of complaints about them, even more so since becoming one. lol In all honesty I've never had a problem with any of them - I've even been modded myself on several occasions. Which just goes to show how unbiased they are. The only mod I've ever seen behave out of order was JPH near the end. Apart from that I've not met a single admin/super/mod here that didn't deserve the title.

The 'temp has gone downhill - I hear this alot these days, and well, I have to admit I partially agree with this. Although I think that description in itself is flawed. It's not the 'temp that's gone downhill it's the quality of the community spirit of the users. Sorry to say this guys but the 'temp can only give you as much as you're willing to put in. If you're not willing to get involved in the community, to help the community spirit and the like then that's how it is. It becomes a place where people just come for info, patches and to whine that the latest game isn't working their cart. So if you think the 'temp has gone downhill then instead of whining about get off your arses and start cheerleadering! There are lots of community activities to get involved in, and if there isn't one that suits then start one up! All I can really say is get involved, you won't regret it. Think of it like this, if your room is a mess the best thing to do is tidy it up. :)

All the best users are gone - Yes, there are alot of great members who have left. Real life should always come before internet life. You know what though, for every great member that has left a new great member has joined. I'm not gonna list names and what not because I don't believe in that kind of stuff, but take a look around. We have plenty of new and amazing members If the great members who left weren't being replaced by other new great members then the site would just be full of patch kiddies, but it really isn't. You just need to read throough the USN and GOTC sections to see it.

The Edge of the Forum has gone shit - Yep, no arguments from me on that one. It used to be a place full of random humour, madness and just plain fun. Don't get too nostalgiac though, there was still alot of rubbish in there. It's just the ration of quality to shite was alot better. These days the ratio has reversed but in all honesty I see it getting better and better. I have to wade through alot less shit flung at the walls by monkeys than I used to, so that in itself is a good sign. And I'll say it again, the community can only be as good as it's members. If you feel a particular part is going downhill or needs improvement then get off your arse and help achieve that.

Accusations of trolling - There are way too many accusations of trolling going on these days. I understand that there will always be the odd hiccup due to language and culture barriers and that some people will mistake sarcasm for trolling, but honestly now people need to stop accusing others of being trolls simply because they disagree with them. Trolling isn't disagreeing with someone, that's called disagreeing with someones opinion. It makes for healthy debate and lively discussion, and it's one of the things that makes the 'temp such a great place to be. The wide range of people, cultures, ideas and opinions!

There's more censorship on the 'temp now - Yep, there's more censorship here now. It's not because it was suddenly chosen to enforce more censorship though. It's just that more and more cunts are posting stuff that needs to be censored now. The same things are edited out, censored and trashed that always were. Instead of complaining at mods for censorship complain at the people posting the stuff that needs to be censored! If you post racist, homophobic or pornographic material it's gonna get trashed. If you insult someone for no other reason than to insult them it's gonna get trashed. That's the way it is and always has been. You don't want your stuff trashed, then treat everyone with respect, simple as. The same philosophy applies here as it does in real life, treat people as you expect to be treated. If you behave like a twat you'll get treated like a twat. In all honesty I think GBAtemp is one of the least oppressive open forums I've ever used in my life.

My favourite troll has been banned - Boo-hoo.

I'll end this here but may add to it as other things come to mind. I wasn't planning on writing an anniversary type thread but suddenly felt the need to! lol Here's a guide to GBAtemp behaviour I wrote a couple of years ago, and personally I think it's still as humurous and fitting today as it was back then. http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=116...e+gbatemp+guide

So in final comment I just want to say to all the people I've known that have left I hope I see you guys become regulars again at some point and I hope life is treating you well and you're successful at whatever endeavour you're attempting! And to all the people I've known for both a long and short time here, thanks for all the help, laughs, good times and support you've given me over the years - it's always been very much appreciated. :grog: Here's to knowing you for many many more years to come.

For all those on the temp I don't know or don't speak to, thanks for contributing to the community I love so much. :)

When I saw the title, I thought this was some thought of election slogan.
GBAtemp is a great place! It has an awesome community, great staff members and normal members and is an awesome place to get information about all sorts of things.
I  you, TrolleyDave. Haven't spoken to you in a while!
Revvy! Long time no see! Totally agree with everything you said!
Daaaaaaave! :grog:

I've been registered for nearly 2 years already; doesn't feel like it though!

So much grog in this thread...
Time really does fly by here if you're making the most of it. There's been plenty of times I've logged on only meaning to check a couple of posts and PMs and ended up spending hours here!
yes, i was a lurker.
Ah, that would explain why I don't remember you from when I first joined.

Cheers mate! :grog:

I thought with all the times I've talked about politics and what not here it was a pretty fitting title. ;)

This was one of the best posts I've read here on the temp in the last six months, wait, maybe even longer! What you've said fully corresponds to the truth, and people should read your post, before start whining, because they would learn a lot more on how a community works!

Oh and obviously, thank you for all the great work you do here on the 'temp. You're a great addition to the staff, and I feel honoured to work with someone with as much dedication to this community as you have!

Keep up the good work matey

Ha! I tried getting myself involved, and all I got was hate and not a single thanks. I was never appreciated. Take my last raffle. Not a single thanks was given.

That was the reference, yes.

What you did there was the best summary of the temp I've read. You probably don't know me, but I'm glad that you are a mod, this beer is for you :grog: cheers

From all the times I've been on GBAtemp and from what I've observed, GBAtemp is driven by generations with the largest impact. People who joined during 2006 changed the forums in a huge way, and those people are mostly gone now. The forum is mostly driven by those who joined during 09 and 10. Not saying that 09 and 10 generation is shit, it's just that they are slightly different than the ol' farts and have different taste. (ie. furry p0rno, hairy tits, homosexual felines... :ninja:)

I'm sorry but I don't know what time I joined this community where I got kick'd, spit'd and shun'd! IMO, it really depends how much time you spend with Tempers in general. I mostly do the lurking then add my two-cents when I feel like it. I complain when I don't get an answer (Seriously, there's like over 2k members and I can't get an answer instantly?!)

Getting involved?! Don't get me started, do you know how times I tried, literally tried to get involve into this community? All I get 'No' or 'Not Experience' or 'STFU N00b!' Well you can't help when no one giving an open door to start with! No, none of the mods are corrupt. They just sick of new comers not reading the rules and breaking them like pricks!

In the end, it's improving from I seen being for like 1 year so far. I'll see what happens over the few years.

TAIYO!!!!

Rauly! Cheers matey! I'm nowhere near the quality of modship that the rest of you guys are but your compliment is very much appreciated! :grog: Most of the time I've gotta keep myself in check to be honest, I'd be a right sarcastic cunt all the time otherwise. lol

:( That seems to be happening more and more these days. I probably worded it a little bad cos I'm still a little under the weather. I didn't mean to imply that nobody is making an effort, or that alot of people aren't acting liking self-entitled brats. There definitely is alot of that going on these days, it's a reflection of the way society is going unfortunately. The comment is more aimed at those who bleat like hungry sheep about the quality of the 'temp these days but that literally is their only contribution to it. I'm grateful to anyone who tries to make the community a community. So thanks for all your efforts. :grog:

That's a pretty spot on assessment Westie mate! I think one of the problems with the 09/10 generation is a high percentage of them just seem so self-entitled. Like the patch kiddies for example. They don't see crackers as people who is doing them a favour, they see crackers as people who should be doing things for them. The ease of slot-1 carts had a huge impact as well I think. It moved it from people needing a minimum amount of intelligence and effort to be able to do things to making it easy enough for little kids and people with minimum intelligence to pirate. These people have no knowledge of how the scene works, they just know that they paid 5 bucks for a cart and this should entitle them to everything. The furries don't bother me too much except when they're trying to push it on other people. I don't get it personally, I mean a furry chick that looks like an animal? How in the hell is that hot! lol But I see it like religion, everyones entitled to follow what they want as long as it doesn't affect the quality of life (or forum time heh) of others.

I'll have to disagree with you on expecting an answer straight away. Not all questions can be answered by everyone so sometimes you've gotta wait til the right person is on-line. There's been plenty of times where I've had to wait 3 or 4 days for answers to questions I've posted. I'm just grateful that there are still people willing to help. Nobody gets paid for any of this, and in a world full of people who see skills solely as money earners it's a refreshing change to see so many talented people willing to give their time and knowledge free of charge. Maybe I'm just an old soppy bastard. ;)

I agree with you about too many people being too quick to jump down peoples throats. It irritates the fuck out of me alot of the time and I have to really bite my tongue. The 'temp has never really been a clique or elitist place, but it is kind of becoming that in small pockets. The best thing I can suggest is when people do it to send a report, one of us will step in then. It might take a little while because there are times when we're just not around, but it will get dealt with. We can only respond to stuff that's pointed out unless we happen to read the thread. :)

And whats Taiyo? lol
All I have to say is TLDR (Too long didn't read). I don't mean to ridicule your magnum opus but I find long winded screeds tiresome and boring at their very best. Get to the point in a few paragraphs and I might be tempted to read on.
Lol it was too hard/long to read, but yet you still felt compelled to comment. I know I am one of the old crotchety members that doesn't often play nicely with the newbs, I still however try to make all my comments somewhat pertinent to the discussion at hand. "Patch kiddies" and general ignorance of the scene aside, the thing I don't like about a lot of the newer members is they seem to be more interested in posting for the sole sake of posting and increasing their count number or whatever, and not really trying to contribute anything thoughtful to the site. While there are a lot of informative threads, they are buried under piles of just junk. Its quantity over quality.

It becomes a place where people just come for info, patches and to whine that the latest game isn't working their cart. So if you think the 'temp has gone downhill then instead of whining about get off your arses and start cheerleadering!

Then I'll start cheerleading, you damn chav! :angry2:

I agree with everything you had to say. It was as long as the great wall of china, but I read it all. You can never really get rid of all the assholes or the immature, childish brats who only contribute their idiotic opinions, but the more people who help out, the less you'll see the brats.

Unfortunately, the temp has gone downhill. People throw shit at the staff, Costello and blame the downhill on them. However, it's the staff, the members and the lack of motivation that's killing the site. We can all point fingers and blame each other, but there will always be one pointing right back at us unless we step up to the plate. You can't complain if you don't contribute anything. And no, spamming your nipples, one worded posts, +1s, quoting another without giving your own damn input, sitting back and enjoying everything without saying thank you, is not contributing.

Laughing and having fun in the EoF and general chat is fun, but now the EoF is just fucking lame. All it consists of is stealing topics, changing the title to the opposite of the one you stole and lame topics by spammers. Where's the funny?

I think if people took more time actually reading topics like this(Selective reading doesn't count), they'd get motivated to contribute.

Fireballo: For once, please stop the damn complaining. It's getting a bit... long winded, as you would say.

Anyway, stay awesome you, old fart

You know what you Trollave, you're right! I'm not going to make excuses, the thing is how do you make things better with a new bunch of people coming to the temp without them feeling they are bloody princes while giving their asses to kiss? The Temp was fun when their was no (I really mean this,) Homosexual vides (I mean people did joke on the chat room but it didn't cause serious members to be gay/lesbians), Furry (Yes, this is a problem also. I don't know who started this but that really got me stop being serious about the whole community. I'm not saying ban members who are furries because that won't do any better), Obscene pictures, (I don't need to see a freakin' temper in RL showing their naked body. I already have that experience in bootcamp. I don't need to see any pic unless it has a spoiler on it, then it will be at my own risk to see it) and finally Attention Whores! (You know the ones, those people who post a topic about their going downhill yet they don't need any help from US! So why the hell are you going to post any pointless topic about how much your life suck and still don't want any help- Pride much?!)

I don't care for trolls since trollin is funny until it gets annoying to the point that mods have to stop it. Also ever single Temper who comes here, have to be a better example for newbies. We just kicked a Temper out because he was a narutard, but we didn't kick out a temper for showing their nipples? Answer this one to me, TrollDave.

In all honesty I haven't really noticed an increase in homosexual vibes lately. There was a fad for a little while last year but it's died off now from what I notice. The furry thing I do and don't agree with. Threads about furriness we've been clamping down on, which I agree with. But banning someone just for being a furry? Nah, not really my thing. I see it the same way I see religion. If someone wants to subscribe to it then it's their choice, it's when they start trying to get others to subscribe to it that it becomes a problem. If the only thing the user has to contribute is furry stuff as well then I get annoyed. Like I say though, we started coming down heavy on it a while back and most of it has died off. The furries keep their furriness to themselves so I really don't have a problem with it. If you see a thread devoted to the furry cause then simply report it and someone will deal with it.

The half-naked tempers thing isn't too much of a problem if it's kept in the temper pics thread. When people start getting fed up of it like you have they'll start becoming more vocal and it'll put a stop to it. I'm from the UK though, we've got a slightly different perspective on these kind of things than most. If the pictures are irritating you just report them and us staff will sort it out.

I usually stay away from the attention whore style threads. I know the type you mean though. I stay away from them cos I know I have problems biting my tongue when it comes to stuff like that. Plus I've had enough experience to be able to spot them by their thread title. I know they irritate me so I stay away. There's not really that much can be done except closing them down, and in my opinion that really ain't fair.

If you're on about Naruto Freak that wasn't even close to the many reasons that got him banned.
Ego much?
If you know somebody that embodies multiple aspects he was complaining about while still being enough of a contributor to put his complaints to shame, go on and name them.

I just felt this was the perfect example.

I do apologize for being late to the party, TrolleyDave. You're one of the coolest people I've met thus far in this great community. Though I'm not exactly what one would call a GBAtemp Veteran, and as such can't really voice a valid opinion as to how things have changed around here, I will say that I find it to be a very healthy, helpful, and wonderful community, in no small part thanks to fine members such as yourself.

Regarding the sudden pervasive mindset that GBAtemp has 'gone downhill', I feel that GBAtemp is still far better a forum than any other I've come across thus far. Where this sudden surge of sedition is coming from, I haven't the slightest clue. Are such negligible factors such as sexual orientation and jocular antics like showing one's bare chest really legitimate causes for discontent? Even amidst all the positive aspects of the forum such as helpful tutorials, stimulating debate, and in-depth reviews, graciously provided by the fantastic members of our community, these trifling instances are still enough to brazen GBAtemp with the label of 'lost cause'? Yes, our fair community is by no means a divine one, but such is the consequence of a forum, where anyone is free to join and post. There will always be the ungrateful members, and the provincial novices, and a few members that you just won't like. Even THOSE would hardly qualify as legitimate reasons for expressing discontent with the forums. If one's distress stems strictly from those, or also sexual fetishes, or the occasional nipple, or heaven forbid someone posts something silly in the Edge of the Forum, then I'm afraid GBAtemp also suffers from a lack of tolerance as well, and those respective members are only inhibiting their own enjoyment of the wonderful community known as GBAtemp. :(

It's not just the pictures that have me extremely irked. It's the fact that these idiots try and hijack a topic with their bullshit. My angry QQ ragequit topic now got fucking burned over by the Stupid Hairy Monkey King bullshit. I can't even have a decent topic without HIM just going straight in there and advertising his shit. It's gotten really FUCKING annoying. The site bans the quiet mellows who speak their mind but keeps the spammers and trolls who show off their nipples? It's gotten really lame. It's these nipple spammers that's made me really hate the temp. Last I recall, this is an independent video gaming site, not a I WANT MY NIPPLES spam site. There's plenty of that on places like 4chan. why can't they go there instead?

I'm not going to go pointing fingers at anyone, but I'm sure the spammers know who they are. Why keep the people who do really ridiculous things like body adverts, +1s, o.o faces, etc? Seriously, in the last like 10 days, I've seen GBAtemp go half to hell. I still have a lot of questions that I want answered, but I can't even get that justification. I'm sure the staff knows what I'm raging about too... Can it at least be PM'ed? As far as I know, it's a private message for a reason. ;) Bottom line: we're a gamer's forum. Let's try and get some decorum back in here.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM

  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm

  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@rqkaiju2, Physical media is a great source for archiving your data, none of that cloud storage shiz.
