So Close, Yet So Far

Basically, I've given up trying to get my Mom to go in on the PSP. She won't budge even a little at this point. I did get her to agree to spend about $20 on memory for it when I get it so that way I can get the adapter and a couple of MicroSD cards though. Now, it isn't like I'm far away from getting the PSP, but I am about $20 short. I have approximately $64 saved up. I know nobody is gonna part with their PSP of any model for less than $80. Well, at least I think. I still went ahead and created an ad on Craigslist for now to see if I could get anybody to bite.

I'm just fresh out of ways to earn cash though. I got the $40 my parents owed me from me loaning them cash back in September, and earned another $20 on top of that. I've taken back cans and bottles we had for the refund (yay for Oregon), but only got about $3. That leaves me below the $80 mark, and I'm just not quite sure what I can do for cash now.

It just kinda sucks more than anything.

you'll get there eventually .
try selling some old stuff you have you won't mind to various places .
friends , stores , anything really to make a little more cash .

Note serious answer: Work the street corners :tpi:

Serious: I know I regret this but, maybe trade some stuff to GameStop?

Guess it's time to find a job then, unless you are super busy with schoolwork and extracurriculars.

That's WAY better than my ideas.
Go with that Nathan

The job market in my area is horrible. I live in the state with the highest unemployment rate to boot. A job is pretty much impossible with my terrible resume sadly. As it stands, I'll keep trying to see if I can get the PSP for what I have, as there is always the chance that I'll get lucky. I was considering the Gamestop option, but then also considered the fact that I would get $3 to $4 max for most of my DS games since I primarily own older titles (Super Mario 64 DS, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, etc.).

I am also not selling my MP3 player, my DS, or my PS2. They're mah babies.

Oregon? California has a higher unemployment than that, and plenty of my friends were able to find jobs. Try anyway, you might get lucky. Some jobs aren't looking for experience; they'd rather have a newbie so they have an easier time with training(experienced people like to stick with their previous training).

It's a lot easier nowadays, with lots of online applications. I did a couple and was able to score an interview, but then my parents intervened and told me they wanted me to focus on school, so that was that for me :P

I can try, but I just don't have high hopes. None of my friends or even my family members have had any luck where we are. Doesn't help that I live in a small town with limited transportation. Fast food is for sure a no go though, positions are filled up as soon as they empty with reserve applications. A lot of the local places have tons of applications that are good if they need somebody too, plenty of teenagers with no experience if they want one.

I wish I lived in a different state sometimes. :/

I feel forced to post this.

Now to the topic, maybe you could get enough bucks to get the PSP using the old games you have. You may never know.

I've been considering trading in games, but most of my DS games are older titles that Gamestop isn't going to pay much for. They won't give jack for any PS2 games, I already know that much. I could try to trade in Demon's Souls I guess, I don't really want that game anymore and I bought it with my own money awhile ago (well, a Fred Meyer's gift card). That with a couple DS games +10% trade in bonus for having three might just make the difference.

Bad part, I have to spend $1.50 on bus fair just to go check.

If I could turn that useless $15 iTunes gift card into cash, I would be set.

You could sell it to some friend or something for 10 or 5 bucks or so, then get the rest from Gamestop.

I've tried to offload the thing before. There are a surprisingly (or not so surprisingly) small amount of people who even want an iTunes gift card. Probably why it was given to me to begin with really.

Well, I just went ahead and looked at the used value of some of the DS games I owned and was surprised to find that games like Super Mario 64 DS still go for about $25 used and $35 new. That would guarantee about a $9 trade-in on that game alone. A few of my other older titles are worth more than I initially though too.

The only real question is if I want to do the trade-in. If I do, that means I have to purchase the PSP at Gamestop and I have to get enough to be able to afford their used PSP's. If they only have 3000 series and GO's in, that leaves me $20 short....again.

Craigslist that bro. Gamestop rips you for their trade-ins.

Everybody on Craigslist is looking for a super deal though. It gets annoying with people not messaging you if your price is firm, and trying to get a huge discount if you mention that the price isn't set in stone. Gamestop may rip you off, but at least you know they're going to and don't have to wait for the person to show up and magically be a few dollars short.

I've been heavily disheartened by the failure of my friends and family members alike. Hope isn't in my dictionary when it comes to job hunting around here.

when i was job hunting i tried all the fast food places and supermarkets and game stores and all that crap and kept getting the "we'll call you" routine but you know what? i'm glad i never heard back and just kept trying because if i had gotten one of those calls then i'd be flipping burgers in some shitty wage job rather than getting paid to sell games and electronics to people and getting awesome discounts on stuff that i'd usually spend all my wage on anyway :D

Man, you don't know how lucky you are.

I want a PSP too. I have $350 saved up, all my own spending money, and my dad won't allow me to SPEND any of it until my birthday (may). On top of that I have to get all As in school and "Mature" (and god knows what he means by that, I et straight As in school and play a shitload of music, and I'm not rude or anything) I'm getting a star wars or daxter 2000 so I can hack it and have the extra RAM for the N64 emu.

My only hope is that someone will put up a PSP in the give/trade section of GBATemp and hold an animation contest where I can easily win, Dad says he would allow that since I wouldn't be technically spending money. But let's face it, that aint happening :P

One thing though, if money's an issue, go for a 1000. Many, MANY of them go for $50 or less used. ESPECIALLY on craigslist.

I will say though that their Dpad is pretty sucky and half the RAM of the 2k will make it a little less...good for N64 emulation, though still fairly capable.

Ah man, your Dad just won't let you get anything game related unless you really work for it. I mean, I remember when you were talking about only having your old Slot 2 (I think) to use for NDS pirating, a long while back, you know, at that other place.

I have been checking Craigslist actively. The problem is, everybody sells their PSP with at least two or three games, and that's enough to put the price outside of my range. They also won't budge, the games have to go with. It annoys the hell out of me, as I just want the system and nothing else. I don't even need any memory to go with it, another thing people use to pump the price up another $30 or so.

I'm gonna keep trying though. I have seen PSP's going used on Amazon that are in my price range, but they are rated pretty much as low as they can be by the seller themselves for the condition of the device.

Yeah, I remember the good old times(?) there with my M3 perfect. I still use it for GBA, but the DSTWO is my homeboy for DS games.

I've found in my area quite a few that sell their PSP without other stuff. Here's another tip; Look out for psps that "don't work", at least for earlier models. Some people who didn't care enough to learn about hacking just buy hacked PSPs from their friends and sell them dirt cheap when they brick them by accident by stupidly shutting down while updating FW instead of learning about a $6 fix. I made a thread a while back about such a PSP in my area that I was considering; a 1000 w/4gb memstick that the guy was selling for $30 or less and it sounded just like a bricking. But in the end I decided that A. dad wouldn't let me anyway and B. I wanted a 2000 for the 64MB RAM.

...of course should you go this route, be sure to bring a pandora with you before you buy (also a mem stick w/ signed PSPident or Ta-088v3 checker if you're after a hackable 2000) and actually go to the guy's house to check it out.
