I'm so unhappy part 2

Taking onboard several pieces of advice, I went to sleep, awakened and remembered E3. Only this time, it wasn't painful or annoyingly depressing- just funny.
The fact that Nintendo can make a controller and confuse people with 1) Not revealing Pikmin 3 and 2) Not even show the bleddy console in the first place.
This was so severe, up to the point that one of the people I asked actually thought the Wii U was both the amalgamated controller and console in one.

The controller seems to divide opinion- 50/50, in fact, it's a bit like

. You either think it is totally brilliant, or incredibly vomit-inducingly bad. There really wasn't any leeway with the people I quizzed. Most notably, one said "I will go to the depths of hell before I see the Wii U become a revolutionary controller,"!

You see, my opinion is that the console looks...amazing. It is sleek, and beautiful. It definitely does HD, and looks amazing. The controller? Looks like a UDraw Tablet with the tablet component replaced with a screen!
I do hope that when Nintendo release the console, it is 100% backwards compatible with Wii Remote Plus-es, and Classic Controllers.

Nintendo's decision puzzles me. The We-You mentality, and Iwata talking about "Wider" and "Deeper" gameplay makes no sense. Nintendo have obviously been on the edge of innovation- touchscreens, motion sensing, now 3D. But this puzzling "We and You" approach makes no sense. All I can see is a rather nice touchscreen with buttons.

I will certainly be trading in my Wii for a Wii U, but only if it supports other controllers in exactly the same way, so I don't need to shell out for this controller, which I'm obviously hating upon now, but I feel it is justified.
Oh, and about yesterday's incredibly embarrassing blog post- I apologise for my naïvety- it was right after E3, and very annoying for me.

Can I laugh at you if it is revolutionary?

(btw I'm still half and half about it. I need to play it before I decide how I feel about it)
The controller is really interesting even though it seems a bit bulky.
I am a bit disappointed that it is a resistive touch-screen display but I suppose that's necessary to keep the cost down. Personally, I love the aesthetics of the controller. The only thing that's bothering me is the placement of the analog nubs. They seem too high up on the controller. I do wonder how Nintendo supposedly managed to add streaming games and the ability to flick things back and forth without latency.
First thing that crossed my mind when I heard the name Wii U was 'somebody's taking the piss'.

Now I've seen the console and it seems apparant that it's Nintendo taking the piss.

Seriously. I'm sure it'll attract the gimmicky crowd and the casuals, but my reaction was a resounding 'meh'. To me it'll quickly lose appeal once the gimmick wears off. Example, the Wii doesn't have many games that attract me, and I've never been a fan of motion controls, with the exception of my PS Move controls, and even then only for Time Crisis and that sword fighting game. Once the gimmick of the motion controls wore off I saw little value in the system because it was flooded with pointless mini game collections and kiddy crap. Whereas the 3DS has a gimmick in its 3D screen, but when the novelty wears off it still has a pretty solid lineup of games to keep the fire going.

Granted, it might get better as time goes on, but the controller looks too big to be comfortable. The buttons seem awkwardly placed. The graphics are last gen at best from what I've seen so far. And the titles I've seen announced so far just don't feel right for it. Ninja Gaiden 3? To me that should be on the 360 or PS3. It'd look far better and the game's already hard enough without a wierd controller to adapt to as well.

Maybe it's just me but I'll be waiting to see how it develops before I invest. After all, the Wii died pretty quick for me. So if this can't keep up the pace with a steady stream of good games, then it's not gonna be worth my time or my money.

Yeah I'll admit I'm in two minds about it. I think it's a revolutionary idea as a controller. I love the on-controller screen. It's an evolution of the Dreamcast VMU idea, which at the time I thought was fantastic and way ahead of it's time and really wished other companies had carried on with it. However the VMU was limited by the technology of the time unfortunately, whereas the WiiU controller isn't. The amount of things that an on-controller touch screen can open up and add to gaming is immense, and if used right practically unlimited. Think of what it could add to flight sim/space sim style games, war games, sniper games, RPG's, FPS's, RTS games and many more.

The only thing that puts me in two minds about it is the actual size of the controller itself. Hadie was saying that all reports about it mention it being incredibly lightweight, which eases some of those doubts a little. The bulkiness aspect of it is still putting me off a little tho. It's one of those things where my doubts won't be eased until I get my actual hands on it and give it a try.

I won't trade my Wii for a Wii U simply based on the fact that it will be griefing me away from my hoards of ISOs that I plug into it.

However I'll purchase a Wii U to hawk on ebay and then put the cash back in the bank where it belongs.

Yes the graphics are stunning on the Wii U but we have been fooled on current gen systems with promises like this and in the past with previous gen so I'm not expecting a whole lot from a 2011-based deck. I am going to expect Microsloth and the demons at Sony Enterprises to come out with something far superior next time though.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
