Thoughts on Japanophiles and such

(The thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are not meant to be hateful in nature to any one group or person. If you feel like this post attacked you, please settle it with me by PM.)

Just thought I'd do a bit of a different topic than usual. One thing I've noticed after being exposed to nerd culture (AKA gaming and whatnot) I've noticed quite a few people who are Japanophiles.

Japanophile: A person with an interest in, or love of, Japan and all things Japanese.

I put that there so our terms aren't confused. Basically, I notice a lot of people here and in other places of nerdom really like Japan. Most people relate this to love of anime/video games, but I've seen many people who don't like anime and still really like Japan (I have yet to see what can be called an "anime fan" who doesn't love Japan). Now, I don't consider anyone who likes Japan a "Weaboo" or an "Otaku". Those are terms I personally shun being called or referring to other people as (Unless in joking). I, however, can say to an extent I exhibit some qualities of being a Japanophile such as liking certain aspects of Japanese culture and wanting to learn the language as well as visit the country one day.

I want to be clear on the fact that I don't think it's a negative thing. I remember there being a large quantity of people in America who were obsessed with Indians and wanting to become one. I recall an episode of Saved by the Bell (Half of you probably just died or projectile vomited) where Zack learns he's partially an Indian and has to give a report on them. I think it's healthy to like another culture that isn't your own, as long as you're a grounded person and don't go too far with it (One guy I knew shaved his head in an effort to become a monk).

So basically, what are your thoughts on this? Do you think it's weird or bad that people can become obsessed with a foreign country such as Japan? Or do you think it's normal? What about those who are obsessed with niche part of that culture such as anime or video games? If this becomes a debate relating to something else I'll request to have the topic locked.
There are specific people that get on my nerves, though. Specifically people that say they love japan because "they watch alot of anime", or people who think they know everything about japan because "They watched Lucky Star and know how all Japanese act". God, I hate those types of people, and they're not hard to find either.
I'm not a fan of those who take it that far either. To me, the worst is when you have someone who is so stupidly blinded they make themselves look like a retard by how they act. One example I knew was a 13 year old girl who would always end her sentences in "desu" and she would say "kawaii" instead of "cute". Not to mention all she could talk about was anime. I think having a hobby like anime is fine, but if it's all you can talk about, then you probably have a problem or are going through some kind of weird phase of puberty. I also happened to know a kid who was oddly obsessed with Toy Story back in the day when it came out to a point where I almost started hating the movie.

I'm aware this isn't some incredibly psychologically stimulating subject, but when you're on a site that has topics like "What's your favorite X game?" and "What do you think of Y tv show?" I think this is a bit more mature and thought provoking than that.
"My thoughts on [Group X]" isn't exactly the best way to start an intelligent, non-bias discussion. I know it's a legit discussion topic, but there are plenty of people on this site who would find it offensive, and in some cases a personal attack.
Hmm, I see your point. This is a blog however and so I think that adding my personal thoughts was appropriate, but I can see why you would think that people could see this as an attack. I'll clarify that in the first post.

I don't think I'm a japanophile, since I don't love everything japanese. I have, however, always been facinated by japan, even since I was a little kid. I thought the language looked beautiful (in the Mystical Ninja for SNES manual, we had the japanese import) and I think it was since then I was kinda... interested.
And that grew on me, and I like the culture, atmosphear, language, some of the food and such.
i hate philes.

philehaterphile

Suffixes with the common part -phil- (-phile, -philia, -philic) are used to specify some kind of attraction or affinity to something, in particular the love or obsession with something.
So you hate people who like things?

more specifically, I think it breaks down to: people who like people who hate people who like things...

My mind=Blown.

I'm still trying to understand what that means...

Then your problem, rather, seems to be with obsessive people.
And if you have an obsessive hatred of obsdessive poeple, you would then have to hate yourself.
Maybe your problem is actually with your own self-hatred, or your hatred of your own obsession.

Hmm.

Also, philia (phile) = love

I don't have a problem with people who are interested in actual Japanese culture (Not just J-pop, or anime, etc.), but when people go and dress up in kimonos, act Japanese, start talking in Japanese normally, that's when it's just too much.

This is a perfect example of what I mean, troll or not:

I like Japanese food and video games, and I like vacationing in Japan. I don't like Anime or Manga :P

Does that make me a Japanophile? Probably not.

You can close your own topic in the Blogs section.

1.Go to "Manage my Blogs" at the top of page.
2.Check the box by the Blog you want to delete/close.
3.Go to the white "Select an Action" field, go to your choice, click go. Easy.

BTW I love both America and Japan: I was born in one, I'm fascinated by the other. There's no reason to get emotional about what countries we like or dislike to whatever degree. Just relax about it, alright? ;)

Exactly. A weeaboo is an annoying Japanophile extremist and I hate being labelled as one, I'm just an otaku that likes Japan, dang it!

My intentions for wanting to learn Japanese are because I don't like the idea of going somewhere and not knowing the native language. That's and there are some great video games and manga out there that I want to be able to understand. I wouldn't really say I'm a weeaboo, though.
you know the term otaku is borderline derogatory, right?
In Japan it's completely a derogatory term, but many American manga/anime fans tend to relish in it. It's basically being called "an anime nerd", which isn't far from the truth. Though you can be an otaku for anything, really, people just tend to generalize it to anime and manga. As they say, "You are what you are", hence why we wear it as a sort of badge of honor.

I see. So it's like black people using the "N" word as a term of endearment or like Mexicans calling each other wetbacks. Gotcha.
