Interested in learning Japanese.

I've been interested in learning this language for quite awhile, and I finally made myself read Densetsu guide. I'm going to try and learn Kana in my spare time, it's probably going to take me a great deal of time and effort for me to understand and actually speak the language itself. Years or so

Is anyone here doing the same as me? How is your progress?

I'm trying for a multitude of reasons, but right now I'm not focusing on it 100%.

I'm also trying, but not 100%. I actually like learning Japanese though, so I'll eventually be able to understand and read it.

I'm learning it in high school right now--so far so good! It's only been a few weeks but I have all the kana pretty much memorized. It's cool being able to read Japanese even if I can hardly understand it. :P
I'm sure I'll get better...What I'm afraid of is Kanji. ~6000 characters I think, with around 2,000 needed to be considered literate. Ah well. Time and practice, I guess.

Good luck Nujui/KirbyBoy/Duskye/Sheaperd121.

I don't know what to call you.. Nujui doesn's sound.. right to me.

Anyways, for now, I have my hands full with Traditional Chinese Writing.. I can speak Cantonese fairly fluently, I've been doing it my whole life :P, but I can't read or write that much. And my Chinese teacher is useless.

Anyways, Good luck on learning Japanese.

You can call me whatever suits you best.

What do you think of a "Virtual Speech Community" so you can practice this language with the other Temps?

In that case I'll call you "Dusk"

I seriously recommend formal training if possible. Two weeks at college and I learned all of the kana, some basic grammar, and a set of vocab. I actually went to Mitsuwa and picked up a volume of Sayonara, Zetsubou-sensei and was surprisingly able to read some of it (mostly because the kanji had furigana) and I could probably weather through it with a dictionary after I learn the rest of the fundamental grammar rules.
