Daily Fail

I work in a Newsagents (its where I get the quotes for my sig, I swear) and during the monotony of putting all the supplements into the papers (spare a thought for us before you chuck those away will you?) I noticed a completely, entirely, idiotic and downright odd story on the front of the Daily Mail paper.

The story was about a street preacher who had been arrested while shouting the words of Christianity to all. After the arrest people are now rushing to his aid under the banner of "Freedom of Speech", the Catholic Chruch and even Islam have voiced concerns (according to the story.) This all sounds well and good until you realise that the guy was shouting that "Homosexuality is a sin".
When I read this and saw that the Mail and other organisations were trying to help a man who had been shouting this complete, offensive bullshit I almost raged. I don't know which side I fall on in terms of sexuality so don't call me out as a "fag" or whatever but hear me out on this. Why shouldn't he have been arrested? We arrest people all the time for shouting obscenities and racial slurs at black people and other minorities. This guy was doing the exact same thing except using the shield of Religion and changing his target to homosexuals. Why on earth is the Catholic Church trying to help him? They're already in trouble to do with a sex scandal (Catholic Priests and the Choir Boys...) and this should do nothing but sully their name further by associating themselves with bigots like this. If its acceptable for this guy to shout out in the streets that "Homosexuality is a sin" and they should all repent then why do we constantly berate the BNP for being racist and not allowing black people in (something they've had to change)?
I'll admit that I didn't read the full story, only the front page, but I get the feeling that the whole thing continued defending the guy. I'm afraid I can't find the article on their site either so no source :(

And now on a lighter note there was a great comparison between the Daily Telegraph (one of those posh papers with 3 supplements) and the Daily Record (it had a picture of a woman in her lingerie on the cover...'nuff said) on the story of Lewis Hamilton getting his car impounded in Melbourne.
The Telegraph used a quote from the police there, and said that he was arrested for "overexuberant" driving. The Record...well they were a little more sensationalist. This may be a paraphrase I can't remember the full quote, "Police in Melbourne pulled over a boy racer for doing wheelspins only to find that the IDIOT was Lewis Hamilton!"
The comparison makes me laugh and shows just how much of a spin these tabloids put on things.

The Catholic, Christian and Islamic church will defend him because he's basically preaching what is in the Bible/Qu'ran. The Bible and the Qu'ran both call for the death of homosexuals. I personally don't agree that it falls under free speech, it falls under hate speech. Free speech is more the right to speak out against oppression and stupidty, not to commit it. :) This will be soaked up by the BNP propaganda machine though. They'll ask why he was arrested when radical Muslims are allowed to publicly call for the beheading of those that insult Islam and various other slogans.

I should really stop posting in these sort of topics...

So what if he was shouting that. It IS a message in the Bible. Now while it doesn't offend me like it does you guys, it is completely unnecessary that he got arrested. I could however him getting arrested if he was shouting things directed at homosexuals that were completely unnecessary and obscene. I agree whole heartedly that it is a sin, and that it is a choice/chemical in-balance/ whatever, that I cannot prevent/change. If you cannot preach everything that the Bible says, then why preach it at all?

So wait, you agree that it is a choice, but you also agree that it's a genetic/biological mutation and therefore not a choice at all?

The Bible teaches that slavery is acceptable. Should people be allowed to stand on the streets and proclaim the evils of abolition?

I believe it's choice (Experimenting), but some people have an imbalance that they may not be able to help themselves... That is all.

Okay first of all, this is not a religious debate, and it will not turn into one. Second of all that may be in the Bible, but this is modern society, and Slavery is therefore unacceptable (and we all know that people don't follow the Bible to a 'T'). Thirdly someone could preach all they want about the "evils of abolition", but they will get funny looks and rude gestures (maybe even some pitch forks and torches) in response. That is not a great comparison because todays modern society is starting to get the notion that Homosexuality is okay, and by comparison Slavery is hated by [mostly] all. Yet this all falls under free speech because none of this pertains to any one individual, and they are NOT racial slurs.

Didn't Christ teach to be accepting, kind and compassionate to all humans?

whatever...
I am starting to think that people on the internet are prejudiced towards Christians. :(

You should be set on fire if you where born ugly!

Everyone is not against Christians but you can't be a bigot/racist/homophobe then use religion as an excuse. There is plenty of religious people who have changed their views to adapt to the way of current life/facts.

Are your convictions and beliefs not strong or rational enough to hold up to debate, questioning and scrutiny?

edit : Oh and I'm not prejudiced against Christians. I just judged you personally on the words that you spoke. I do the same to athiests, Jews, Catholics and Muslims.

Hey guys: I'm going to go protest against pop music, the Eiffel Tower, Nintendo of America and Bob Hope because my book told me that they were sinful.

Anyone want to join me?

I find it ironic that his xbox 360 avatar looks a little on the gay side

This comment of course meaning the dress sense of his avatar. I'm not saying you can tell who is gay from their dress sense but you know what I mean.

You bastard, you don't do it to Hindus, Buddhists. Taoists, Satanists, Thelemites, Pastafarians and the one thousand other religions out there. Religious discrimination >:

Joking aside. I personally think religion should never be used as self-defense. There's nothing wrong with saying what you like from the bible, but standing in the middle of streets saying "homosexuality is a sin" and hiding behind your "religious justice" is just a move of cowardice. I'm pretty sure the religions don't like it when people spread bad things about them either. In today's almost-equal society, if religions get protection, sexuality should get protection too.

He would be charged already, if there was no intervention.(Probably, don't know law that well)
