Recently I've been going on a journey of self discovery and part of that is reformulating the barriers I've built up around my perceived tastes in gaming. So far I've felt like this has been a vastly enriching experience and I'm kicking myself for not getting into this mindset sooner. I've been sticking to older systems for this, mostly because I have grown to love the aesthetic of older games, but also because it's much cheaper and emulation exists.
For some reason when I look at the PS2, Dark Cloud is always there. The box art felt a bit campy to me, almost like a campy Zelda game, but alluring nonetheless. I was browsing PS Now because I recalled a handful of PS2 games being there and to my surprise Dark Cloud was among them. Not only was it on the service, but trophy support had been added, and I was able to download instead of stream.
I played for about two hours last night and I was extremely surprised at how much enjoyment I got out of it. The story feels like a means to an end, and is very subservient to the gameplay, but I honestly had no expectations so that's fine by me. I adore the town building mechanics, the dungeon crawling, and the tongue in cheek humor of the game. Quite excited to see where things go from here.
