[Discussion] If you've bought a Gateway card but use ONLY cia games, you've been ripped off!

I notice that there are users out there that be like "YAY Gateway, now I got the power" BUT then they be like "I hate .3ds games, gives me problems. All I use are .cia games"

Dude! You could've just used Rxtools and did the same thing! Don't you realize that you could have had the simplicity of loading up your games with the Gateway card?

I'm not saying that .3ds games are better than cia, but if you HAVE a Gateway, why the heck are you using all CIA?! It makes Gateway obsolete and you might as well throw it away and use Rxtools from then on.

It's understandable if you've had Gateway BEFORE Rxtools was Pasta-fied. But even then, why not take advantage of your Gateway and make the best of it?

Usually people have problems with the multi rom menu because of their crappy micro SD card giving them problems such as fragmentation, games missing, etc. And they also have major problems with headers, when it's SO easy to manage compared to Sky3DS. In other words, problems with the multi rom menu is often caused from noob misunderstanding. Been using my Gateway on my 3DS XL, and migrated to a New 3DS XL and it still works perfect. So why not use .3ds roms when you have a Gateway?

Cia games ARE still useful in Gateway since it can act as extra space for more games. Or if you wanted to keep Eshop games as cia just to look legit, you can do that too. But if the majority of your 3DS games are cia, you've got a problem.

Just understand what you're doing when you choose to go all Cia with Gateway.

Erm... I upgraded my N3DS XL's microSD card with a 32GB, yet I prefer using trimmed .3ds on red GW cart, just for the sake of easiness.

Even the Rei's Theme Manager is kept in .3ds and loaded from GW menu when I feel like changing theme (themes still goes to console's micro SD card).

As for fragmentation issue, I never had one probably because I use command prompt to copy to red GW cart's 64GB micro SD card.

The major plus point is that it is extremely easy to backup saves of games, all .sav files are in root of console's micro SD card.

@just3DS I agree about saves being easier to manage as .sav files. Some people claim that .cia saves are easier to manage.
When it comes to cia saves, you have to use SaveDataFiler, LOOk for the title ID on 3dsdb.com then backup the save. All you get is a folder named something like 201508131423. A little extra work to backup saves compared to .3ds saves where the saves are just on the SD card automatically when you close out a game.

I purchased my gateway long before cfw was out. Still prefer .cia only because i like to tell myself that it saves on battery life compared to the red card. But i also feel like newer games at some point wont work via .cia methods and only work with GW's red card. but thats just a gut feeling with no real ground to stand on.

I prefer .cia because 1. no header problems 2. easy to export save with sdf 3. no save corruption

but i still use .3ds for big games like xenoblade. no way I'm converting that to .cia and waste 2 hours installing it.

i wish i would have waited but im not upset that i have gateway. cia are nice, i prefer cia over .3ds but 3ds is a lot simpler.

I'm having some serious issues trying to get my 3ds to work w/my Gateway, I'm hoping someone on here can help me figure it out. I went through 3ds.guide, set the homebrew up on the SD, after finding a suggestion at this being an easier way to load games. However, I don't see what I'm supposed to do, to either get the Gateway to be recognized, or if I load the games another way, to simply play them. I have a number of .3ds files, though if .CIA is better, I'm fine in using them. It seems like the .CIA may be better, just given the .3ds for TriForce Heroes and a number of other ones, aren't playable from the gateway. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I'm having trouble PMing you, MattKimura. I am requesting if and when you have the time since you stated in your thread "Updating from rxTools to Luma3DS" if anyone needed help installing arm9loaderhax to PM you and you would be willing to walk one through the process? I am making such a request. (Don't worry, my profile says I'm a new comer, but my account got deleted due to inactivity. Been around for a while on the CFW scene of many consoles dating back to the PS2/Xbox classic days.) IF anyway you would be able to help out, because your thread personally got me from being stuck on 9.2 ReDirected NAND to finally updating to latest firmware and the ability to play later games. (Thank you!!!) Anyways, if you know how to PM, I will be able to reply. I know how hectic life can be, but using Plailect's Wiki Guide, I don't feel very comfortable doing this on my own. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you so much for your time in advance.

Correct me if I'm wrong, don't GW cheats also work with cias when booted into GW mode? If so, then GW's usage isn't totally nonexistent. To me that's the best usage of it now. I do have rom dumps of my Gen VI and VII pokemon games, so GW also serves as a good source for subsequent playthroughs without taking up console SD card space.

RustInPeace: Wouldn't the GW also be a good means of loading oot3dhax? That way you can use it as an entry point to load CFW onto other consoles after downgrading them? Just a thought, never owned a GW be4.

I had a GWand really liked it, even more for testing translations is much easier thn installing the cia each time ... if I go the wrong version it was simple transfer to the SD, but cia? have to install all it again :/ even more with big games (I actually gave up trying to undub smash because of this lol)
if I could I would get another GWmostly for this, but I can't afford one now so yeah :v I do like GW

the thing was, I had one(on the hype of 9.stuff exploit xD no much accessible emunand yet ), my 3DS broke, I lend it to a friend, but his 3DS got stolen with the GW in :c

@RustInPeace Yes, that's true. It's definitely the best usage of Gateway. I never use ROMs, except for using DevMenu 3DS to install FBI with a freshly formatted NAND
