Final thoughts on Fedora 27

Yay for writing some more to avoid thinking about IRL stuff!

So after using it for three months now (leading to almost half a year with Fedora), I am still quite pleased, I managed to fix the previous mentioned issue with xfce4-power-manager after googling like crazy after my bug report went nowhere. Basically, it is an upstream issue with xfce4-power-manager and its interaction with logind and you can easily fix it with "
xfconf-query -c xfce4-power-manager -p /xfce4-power-manager/logind-handle-lid-switch -n -t bool -s false" or just by toggling the lid control on the Settings Editor. I didn't mess with hibernation because I don't use it that often, suspend works good enough and I am too lazy to edit grub settings, but again, easily fixable.

I am also enjoying using flatpak to get stuff from outside the repos and use upgraded packages, although Fedora's policy is really good with packages (neofetch was added after Fedora 27 was released) and updates (youtube-dl is kept up-to-date), I get a flatpak every now and then. Right now I got RetroArch, MonoDevelop and OpenMW (RPMFusion one is two versions out of date) and the concept seems nice.

I also did some tweaks to the main install that I forgot to tell previously:
  • Replaced xscreensaver with light-locker (just run: $ xfconf-query -c xfce4-session -p /general/LockCommand -s "light-locker-command -l" --create -t string; to integrate with xflock)
  • Uninstalled a bunch of out-of-the-box stuff I didn't use like virtual keyboard, abiword, etc.
  • Enabled notification logging to counter people deleting messages lol
  • Changed GTK theme from Adapta to Arc since I ended up getting bored of Adapta

Also non-related to Fedora:
I did fix the RetroArch flatpak issue with keyboard, it was my own fault lol, I had to turn on "Unified control menus", which was added as an ugly workaround for RetroArch and its internal keyboard thingy.

How much would you recommend this to someone who's only dabbled in Debian based distros, specifically Ubuntu and Linux Mint? Would it be easier or harder to get into?

I tried the latest build of Fedora on my system and the installer would lag for 2-3 minutes between mouse moves. It was impossible to install it.

Was that while it was installing to disk, or just in general? Perhaps the media you were running the installer from was faulty.

Me and Red Hat have really never gotten close with each other. It's always something that I must tweak, edit and next version it breaks and I have to redo over loads. CentOS I can live with since I don't need a gui with it, but over all, I'm guess I just have it easier with Debian and knows more how it works.

@MaverickWellington:
My favorite distro is Debian, due to its repos and philosophy, I went Fedora for newer packages, more stability (compared to testing/sid) and upstream packages, the transition was smooth and I really like Fedora's SELinux defaults, although Debian might turn AppArmor on for Buster so it will be on par by then. You just have to remember to add RPMFusion for proprietary packages (steam, nvidia, etc) and patent encumbered stuff like codecs or font rendering (*-freeworld, ffmpeg, etc.). If you are totally lost with setting that up, there is an user-friendly tool called Fedy for that. I dislike magical black boxes, but it works well if you are coming from Ubuntu. Otherwise, it is really easy to set them up.
@cots:
Are you using NVIDIA or something? I recommend you to use the netinstall iso if you are having trouble with graphics, both GNOME and XFCE were fine here, but I am on Intel HD.
@linuxares:
tbh my first non-Debian-based distro was Fedora back with version... 19 or 20, I think Crystal/Lilith hyped it and I ended up installing, but I was a newbie and basically didn't like how XFCE was ugly af and I suffered with su/sudo. I decided to avoid RPM-based distros until last year when I wanted something that was recent and not Arch and it really improved. The XFCE spin needs a bit more love, so I plan on contributing later with QA.

A vegan, an atheist, and an Arch user all walk into a bar. Who was the first to inform the other patrons what they were?

My thoughts on Fedora 27:

27 already???
Hell, last time I went to take a leak they were on version 13.
These guys should stop doing coke.

@Shadowfied
I used to use Arch, but I dislike how it does some things (no package splitting, no sane defaults mostly) and some of the devs' attitudes (mostly related to this and the Haskell package), the latter is not that of a big deal anymore for me but the former is a pain because my internet is kinda crappy to pull "bloated" packages every week and sometimes I am in a hurry and want it to just work (although maintenance is mostly painless after it is configured).
I don't mind setting it up though and I like the AUR a lot (security issues notwithstanding), it was my to-go distro when I had a shitty AMD C-50 laptop and wanted a custom kernel optimized for Bobcat to squeeze performance out of it.

btw did I tell you I used to use Arch?

    Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

    The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

    @Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

    A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."
