Fucking Fortnite almost got it 100% right (Felt like writing something today)

Here is some truth about me. I don't talk about myself online. Do your research, I'll wait.

While you are gone I'll just talk a bit about how Epic literally took the idea of what a game should be and created it. They gave everything their target audience could ever want in a sandbox with an overlord that enjoys refreshing the battle field. They capitalized on skins, or character clothing transactions and made an actual billion. Yet, for all of their forward thinking and success they seem to continually miss out on the small stuff.

It's funny how recalling the small stuff can bring certain things into clarity. Working for GBAtemp was a full-time volunteer job with stress. I loved posting news, only because it was the end product of all the background work. This new "experience game" that Costello has installed is bringing a lot of old posts back to my attention. There are thousands of Homebrew files resting on Filetrip, sitting there and collecting dust. I brought a lot of these Homebrew projects to light as the news and propaganda wizard for GBAtemp. Face it, I pushed organized Homebrew news with so much enthusiasm I was part in building GBAtemp greater than any site in its day. Argue what you will, we dominated the discussions and forward momentum of the DS Homebrew scene. Everywhere linked back to us at some point and Google propagated us within minutes. It was total involvement for the product and brand that made these results possible. Through this involvement, I strived to understand all aspects of the hobby before ever publishing on the site!

Epic's mistakes begin with skins. All store skins should have been rotated back into virtual stock since the beginning. Instead they created a false rarity for a product that they choose to keep "out-of-stock." Switching the "cancel" button for "purchase" during the Soccer skin week of S4 wasn't a great move either, unless Epic wanted to test the newly implemented "return" system. See what I mean about clarity? While I'm ranting, how did the Omega tier 100 skin of Season 5 get approved with the flawed leveling system that only rewarded those with friends giving additional experience per game? In an effort to balance this game across all platforms and all skill levels, Epic has also made mistakes with weapons such as ruining the shot gun. At close range it can do 7 and 14 damage to the head, then other times 145. The vaulting of the 1st perfect gun to hit the game, the Drum Gun, for an overpowered variant of the the SCAR still baffles most. Epic's own Forum is full of complaints, proof, information, and player testimonials. Dig for a bit and you might reach a similar conclusion, that Epic is missing out on the impacts of their mistakes because they aren't a company fully involved.

The complete picture requires total immersion. When I wasn't posting news, editing, updating Filetrip, testing Homebrew, posting in forum discussions (mainly Acekard and R4), writing WIKI articles or talking with developers, I was discussing the hobby in #acekard with Norm and General Smiths (and a few others). During all of that I constantly used the Internet to research related topics. I was involved everywhere. I even had accounts registered on sites in other languages. I discussed bugs with Copper (FR), Translations with NightFox (SP), and builds with Cluster (RU). I have a computer science and coding, writing, and business marketing and communications background. During my desire to understand the complete picture, I never forget how the small parts add up.

Epic's community is incredibly supportive. Read the posts, watch the vids, follow the news and that much becomes obvious. It is these players that turned emotes into a form of social communication who are the companies greatest supporters. They are the same hardcore players that have been playing Fortnite since the beginning. It is these players that will continue to be part of the game's story. When history remembers Fortnite it should be more than just the larger [cross-play] picture. Epic needs to stop alienating their greatest supporters through the implementation of decisions that lack correct forward thinking. To do this, they need to become a company of Fortnite players.

I've worn a lot of hats during my time and I learned that consultants do not always have to wear suits. You should too. I have wins going back to Season 2.

Having not really done the fortnite thing I can't say for certain but many times I find listening to your community to maybe not be the best thing in a given situation (phrases like inmates running the asylum getting to be thrown about at this point, https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2017-06-29-when-to-listen-to-your-players-and-when-not-to is not bad, would have probably gone with Tribes 2 but that is probably not the most relevant example any more even though it is good).

That said I would probably not have designed a game like you mention. For one it never occurs to me to sell skins or anything like that (be it for actual revenue or as a glorified donate button), I never notice them in a game unless they confer an ability that radically or unfairly alters things, and I never attribute anything to the players with them other than they probably have too much time or money.
