Gameboy Game Hacking - Small guide I wrote for a hack I made

I made a little hack for a gameboy game (Trip World), and since it was my first time hacking a GB game I thought I would write a little about it, and so I made a short guide.
So, if you are interested in making simple hacks for old games, the idea is that you could follow my guide, hopefully come out with the same result as me, and then learn a little and build experience! :)

Nice little guide. Personally if it is a unique icon (as opposed to a commonly used part of the font) I don't see the problem with blanking, though I suppose for the GB/GBC you do occasionally get slowdown at certain sprite counts and that might help with other aspects.

For a 3 lives thing for the "simple" cheat part I do like to throw in a round or two of "do anything/everything but lose a life and then do a has not changed search" as that small a number might not narrow it down quickly enough.

This was an interesting and very informative read, thanks for sharing :). I'll have to take a crack at hacking some old favorites.
I love that you mentioned Wario Land 3, I too enjoy that game and its health-less, lives-less design. In fact, I recently streamed it and got to relive why I loved it so much as a kid.

I was thinking of also making a hard mode/challenge mode - no game over either, but instead of the lives going DOWN when you die, it goes UP, so it tracks how many times you die (or get hurt... etc)
It would be easy to do, apart from when you reach double/triple digits, handling more than one digit would be extra code.
Still very possible, just not a simple 5-10 minute thing (for me).

Thank you for the feedback!
Yes, Wario Land 3 was great, I went back and completed it 100% a few years ago - I didn't truly complete it as a child.
I have never played any of the other Wario platformers although when I saw a screenshot of 4 with its health bar, it did put me off :)

Neat idea, making the lives simply a counter of death by changing decrement to increment :).

I haven't played Wario Land 2, but I can confirm that Wario Land 4 isn't great. It's linear and nothing like 3. Maybe someone will make a Wario Land 3 hack one day ;).

I think I saw a WL3 level editor, or at least custom level a few years ago... not sure how it progressed.
Although hard to match the original Nintendo levels.
Everyone can make a SMW hack in Lunar Magic but only a few are good :)
