Getting ready for DSi

So, I have to admit, I've fallen for the DSi. At first announcement, I was pretty unenthusiastic. Just a DSL with two cameras. I figured I'd get one someday, but I was in no hurry to get a launch system or anything. But, upon seeing the DSWare store (with VC!), the whole photo editing stuff, the SD card possibilities, the new UI, and just all the other functionality, I'm smitten. OH! And a proper battery indicator! No more Charged/Dying status only.

I've now reserved it at the local GameStop (which is about 45 minutes away, damnit), and paid it off in full, for a midnight release. I also have 2 AK2i's on the way from dealextreme (one for a friend). And to top it off, I picked up an 8GB SDHC card for 24 bucks. Since DX takes so long, I won't have the AK2i until about a week after I get my hands on the DSi, but that's ok.

I know how you feel, man. I've been psyched for it for a while now, and I've finally got it all paid off. I'm hoping my GS is doing a midnight release. I'm not getting a flashcart, since firmware updates will probably prevent them from working (Then again, people WILL find a way to bypass the updates).

Funny thing is, I was having the same conversation with the clerk about it, and he mentioned the SD card slot. And he said, "I'm sure the bad people will do something with that". Meanwhile, I had my DSL in my pocket with a CycloDS in it. I just kind of smiled and nodded.

And I wonder still how things will go with this one. I wonder if we may not even need flashcarts eventually. Maybe we'll eventually be able to run things straight from the SD slot. But that's just me thinking too far ahead. I don't know all the technicalities behind it all, so I don't really know what is possible and what isn't yet.

Funniest thing Ive heard all day.

As for DSi tech specs, it is said that the SD Slot is only thing unprotected on new DSi. If correct it might be the one major flaw that Nintendo released.

As for now, we wait. With more than half the world receiving the DSi in the next couple days, hackers will awaken from their hibernation and resume hacking. If all goes well, we'll establish a FW blocker through the SD Slot and we'll be able to play Flashcarts without worry. Then Nintendo will release a New NEW Super Mario Brothers/ Mario Kart DSi. We'll use the header from one of those games and voila DSi Flashcarts which AREN'T locked into DS Mode. The next step is finding a flaw in a game which leads to the Land of the Homebrew Channel. Homebrew will most likely use the SD Slot to its advantage or we'll just run homebrew like we used to in DSL.

Remember this is a very low possibility that all that will happen or even cracking the DSi. That thing is locked up tight.

It's a waste of money. If you have a working DSL, there's no reason to get a DSi.

Just like there was no reason to get a GBASP if you had a GBA, or a Gameboy Pocket if you had a Gameboy, or a DSL if you had a DS. And yet, everyone bought them. Nintendo is a weird company for sure, but they know what they're doing. Eventually, the DSi will be the only thing you CAN buy, and the DSL will fade off just as the DS Phat did.

Sure, I could wait for a price drop, or more incentive to buy one, but I'm just going to get this one out of the way now. Plus, sheer curiosity would have sucked me in anyway.

Personally, I bought a DSL because I didn't have a DS Phat. Also, I think the new additions from DSP to DSL were better than from DSL to DSi

I agree that the changes from Phat to Lite were enough incentive from the start. Smaller size, massively better screens, backlight adjustment, and that damned stylus. I was sold from the specs alone.

But the DSi has quite a few features more than DSL. Yea, the slot 2 removal sucks, but there is the way of Nintendo. Every few "generations", they take away another backwards compatibility. The thing is, the DSi stuff is yet to show itself worth the purchase. With the DSWare, we don't even know what we're getting. That won't show its worth for a while. Same thing with the SD slot, and cameras.

I think that's going to be the initial holdup. People will need to see that it will be worth it to switch/buy. I can see why people won't bother at first. Higher price with less stuff (slot 2)? Plus, all us tempers need to see how flashcarts will flesh out.

Me? I'm going to get one eventually anyway, and I'm just a sucker for handhelds, so I'll bite.

T-minus 3 hours (or so)! Funny how I'm getting more excited about this thing the closer to release it gets. My dealextreme order is about halfway through the wait, and I'm downright pumped. Seems Gamestop is doing a 10PM "gathering" to get payments out of the way, and I guess people are supposed to hang out and chat... or somesuch. That never really seems to happen, it's just "get system, leave". But I imagine they'll start handing them out around 11:45 like usual.
