I Think we Should Stop Acting like NIntendo's Bare Minimum is their Best

Heads up: Sorry for the weird format, I posted this on Reddit before posting here, so the text got a bit screwy.
Quick Disclaimer:
I grew up with Nintendo and still play the games to this day. I'm a Switch owner with an extensive library of games and a few Amiibo. I don't condone hating on a company for illegitimate reasons or out of biased thinking. So please know, I seek to provide nothing but constructive criticism to Nintendo's brand and way of working their business. Now onto the rest...

Can we stop pretending like Nintendo is this godly company that revolutionizes everything and pushes out quality hit after quality hit? It's not productive towards anyone and all it's doing to giving Nintendo this false sense of accomplishment. They do the absolute minimum for their community of gamers, but we rave and celebrate over all of it, no matter how small or insignificant.
Nintendo could be so much more advanced for the price points they're pushing their consoles for, but we're eating it up and giving them no reason to branch out with their hardware or software. I'm going to proceed to state examples of how we're harming Nintnedo's development when it comes to games, software and hardware.

A. "Nintendo has never cared about hardware and performance" Is no excuse as to why their consoles are so weak and underdeveloped. Just because they never cared before doesn't mean they can't now. The amount of third party games that look and run hideously on Nintendo's consoles are STAGGERING.
You're paying $300.00 - $350.00 to play games at a lower and watered down quality than you would have if you just bought an Xbox One or Playstation 4, brand new and sealed for the same price off of Ebay! There is NO excuse, please stop defending Nintendo on this.

You could make the argument that they want to make the Switch affordable, or that they can't use better hardware without sacrificing battery life or good cooling. Nonsense. I've seen much more powerful handhelds that have x3 the power of the switch, around the same form factor and run perfectly fine.
If it costed more towards consumers, I doubt many people would mind being able to play both first party Nintendo games as well as third party games at great quality, both console and portable for around $500.00, just $150.00 more dollars than what you'd be spending on the OLED model.

Not only would this be a GENIUS move for Nintendo, bringing in more audiences and expanding their player base, further filling their wallets... but it would also be one of the best competitive moves they could ever make against Microsoft and Sony. But they just don't.
Come on, even the Eshop lags!

B. I don't feel like the HD ports are or ever have been as hype and impressive as people make them out to be. Think about it for a sec. You're paying full price for a game from over 10 years ago. A game that has simply been processed to 1080p when around the Wii's era, the PS3 and Xbox 360 were already able to do HD. The only reason this looks so graphically impressive is because the Wii maxed out at 480p without the use of an HDMI converter. What we're getting now is what we SHOULD have gotten back then, but hey look, Nintendo cheaping out with their hardware. Why are we getting all hyped and excited for overpriced glorified ports that add almost nothing new to the game other than increased quality and maybe a new control scheme? Yeah, you can now play these games again on "modern" official hardware... but is that really all that exciting?

C. This one is more of a controversial opinion, so I'll try to keep it brief and very respectful. Ignoring Joy Con drift for the longest time, the Slippi incident, attacking Splatoon players, limited release of 3D All-Stars, shoving character advertisement into Smash Bros. Ultimate, terrible severs, slow build up towards SNES and NES online, charging money for a quality of life mechanic in a game etc. Nintendo performs some very shady business practices, many times directly effecting their own consumers, yet we bounce back and act like all is good the moment they tickle our fancy just a little. They face little to no backlash or consequences for their actions because their player base is so quick to turn their heads to their wrongdoings, thus, they never grow.

This is my closing statement. It's all good to support a company you love and cherish. It's completely fine to forgive and forget when said company makes a mistake. But when they deliberately go out of their way to hurt and undersell their fans... Please. Don't act like everything is OK. There are many gaming companies out there who work tirelessly to bring out the content their fans deserve. Companies who do everything in their power to try new things and satisfy ALL of their players. Companies that know when to swallow their pride and admit when they've fallen short.
Nintendo does not feel like one of those companies right now. In my humble opinion, we should stop settling for less and ask for more. This is the thanks we've gotten for sticking with their brand for the past few decades. It's truly a shame.

Min Min and Byleth, possibly also Pyra/Mythra.
Characters that took up Fighters Pass slots in an effort to promote their games.
It felt like nothing other than shameless self advertisement. It could very well not be the case, but that's the general impression it left on a lot of the players. Byleth to promote Fire Emblem: Two Houses. Min Min to revive Arms, which didn't quite work. Xenoblade became relevant again, so that's probably why they did Pyra/Mythra. Was also long overdue. So we missed out on 3 highly requested potential third party characters.

Nobody is really for sure about it, but it definitely felt like a waste of character slots. Byleth is pretty cool, Min Min isn't really used by much of anyone sadly. Pyra/Mythra are somewhere in between.

This is the argument I made in my recent topic about the Metroid series.

People have given 10/10 ratings to every entry in the series despite a number of horrible design decisions encroaching on the classic formula, and over time those things have become permanent since Nintendo didn't get any negative feedback from fans. It's at a point where even as a lifelong fan of the series I have no hype for Dread since it's probably going to carry over all of those boneheaded decisions that no one bothered to complain about. This is how fanboyism destroys franchises.

The reason I support them is due to the fact that their other games are good. Their announcements are getting better, but I get that some stuff is bare minimum. Their stuff is freaking fun, keeping me entertained for hours. You've just gotta realize this is what corporations do with their IP.

A. "Nintendo has never cared about hardware and performance" Is no excuse as to why their consoles are so weak and underdeveloped. Just because they never cared before doesn't mean they can't now. The amount of third party games that look and run hideously on Nintendo's consoles are STAGGERING.

Ooh, "NO excuse" eh? Maybe you've got a bigger problem than you realize.
Their consoles are fine. Nintendo's unique style lets their hardware be, well, theirs. It's hard to put into words. I will defend them on this. The properties of the Switch aren't meant for super accelerated games because Nintendo is more on the family friendly side of things. Those third party developers like NetherRealm or anyone else are just gonna have to live with their graphics being dumbed down a bit. The way they make the consoles makes them cheaper than other Next-gens as well. Also, they have a care for performance. look at the 3DS hardware revision "New". They upped the performance scale to decrease loading times and to allow for better games to be made portable. Xenoblade, Minecraft, etc. Smash Bros used to run in extended memory, but now it runs like any other game on New 3DS.

The Switch is "underdeveloped" because:
1. It was released in 2017. The hardware they could get is nowhere near what they could get now.
2. It's Nintendo bundling a bunch of hardware into a 6" screen that can be put on a TV. This is experimental stuff, idiot. Packing all of that hardware and a screen into such a small package certainly won't have a high-end effect. Yet somehow, it's still superpowered, running Wii games that are confirmed as GPU-emulated, running games like Persona 5 Strikers and Mortal Kombat 11 in such a tiny freaking device. You think you could do better?
3. It's not meant for high end because it wasn't designed that way. If you want them to bundle an Intel i9-9900k into such a small device, you must not be too welcoming in the game community.
4. Xboxes and PS4/5 aren't portable. The Switch is. Again, look at 2 and 3. It's literally the best they could do with the components available four years ago.

That looks like a shiz-ton of excuses to me. Unless you want the Wii3 (W3, Wii v3, 3ii), it probably isn't gonna change until their next big console. You've gotta have a little understanding.

------------------------

The IP stuff is weird, but I don't support what they did with Big House/Slippi. That's a different problem.

Nintendo has been slacking. When the Switch was first announced, their marketing drove the hype. Unlike the WiiU, which (if I'm honest) actually offered MORE value for what it was. Then the Switch came out. I went into Target day 1 to get my system. Went home, played it. The "wow" factor wore off after a few weeks. Then I modded it, it got banned. Sold it. Bought another. Played that on and off for about a year. Had it modded, and now it's just something I play for a few minutes at a time over the course of a month.

The system had potential, but it was overstated. The lack of a retro gaming presence is utterly insulting. Considering VC has been a thing since the early wii days. Hell, the 3DS has a better retro library. Believe it or not, the Switch could have been primed for a retro revolution. Instead? We get two applications, locked behind a pay wall. They work for their intents and purposes. I guess.

What else have we gotten, though? Well, we got SM Odyssey, Breath of the Wild (It's a port), and a few other first party titles people really don't talk about. The third party library is laughable. When Doom first came out, I was actually impressed they managed to fit it in its entirety onto the Switch. Anything after that, though? I kinda laugh at. Nowadays they're seemingly quick ports that are so far toned down, you could convince me I'm playing them on a PS2. That or we get cloud ports. Why? I really don't know.

I agree with the sentiment, but Nintendo is a household name and the aunts and uncles and grandparents will continue to buy into it for their kids/grandkids. I do believe Nintendo should try harder, but their coasting by has done well for them. They don't see a reason to try harder.

"They have the biggest and best back catalogue out there, it's why they became so popular. They could be doing so much more with it... yet they aren't. They don't have to. They'll make their tub loads of money one way or the other, so they may as well take the path of least resistance. They don't have to pour quality into these collections, because they are going to sell by the truckload anyway. They are currently the richest company in Japan. It's times like these where I wonder who the true villain is. While everyone is pointing and yelling at companies like EA, who shout their sliminess to heavens, I can't help but wonder if anyone else notices the dagger pressed up against their backs"

@Memoir I definitely see your point and I agree. I'll reply to this in more depth soon, gotta give my fingers some rest first though haha
Replying to toxic angry Redditors takes a lot out of you lol

@Arekkusuda Oh definitely. I fully agree with this statement. Dare I say, Nintendo is just as bad if not worse than EA in some cases? But yeah, they play the real life "Luigi wins by do absolutely nothing" haha. So while they stuff their pockets full of cash, we're starving for something more.. only apparently not, because a lot of people are OK with being given table scraps.
Very well written, by the way.

Just don't forget what this is about and enjoy the games you can. As you get older your skin will thicken, your time will lessen and this stuff won't matter.
