Is it wrong to be "proud to be an American"?

So I'm American and I'm proud of it. I'm proud of the men and women who have fought and are fighting to defend our country. I'm proud of the ideals and dreams our country was founded on. And I'm proud of. And I'm proud to live in a country with the energy and liveliness that is distinctly American. Now I'm aware that our country is flawed. I'm aware the government is far from perfect (though not as bad as people say), and I'm aware that the past few years may have been a step back in societal advancement, but there's a lot of good to be found here. All I've seen on the internet recently are posts on how tragic America is and how it's the worst place in the world. This comes especially from my generation millenial-gen z (if you consider gen z existant). I feel like this is part of a larger issue where younger generations "rebel" as a way to stand out, but end up being just like everyone else. However, that's a topic for a different day. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I wish people were less... confrontational for lack of a better term, and could enjoy what they had. Anyway, sorry for the little rant or whatever. This is just a piece of what's been going on in my mind lately.

No, it's not wrong. If anyone thinks different, they can shove a red hot cactus up their ass (wrapped in bacon, and dipped in chocolate)

There's a difference between being proud of being American and Nationalism. Nationalism is wrong because it's an extreme love of one's nation without seeing fault in that nation, while deciding the rest of the world is shit. If you are aware of flaws in the country, then you aren't a Nationalist.

It's not wrong to be proud of American heritage, but that means something different to just about everybody in modern times. This country doesn't seem to have the shared morals and values that it once did. Complacency has certainly got us nowhere fast while the list of problems to solve grows ever longer, so rebellion is an appealing solution to many, not just younger generations.

I'm certainly having a hard time taking any pride in being an American recently, as it seems to me we've sold our soul in worship of greed as our only true god. Which means the only way to truly be free in this country is to be born wealthy. The rest of us are stuck living in a dual prison/military industrial complex with a crumbling infrastructure and a "fuck it" attitude toward the environment.

@DeslotlCL Well what's the alternative? I don't think "USA people" has ever been proper vernacular, and "United States citizen" is pointlessly long. ^_^

@DeslotICL Both of those have "American" in the definition, so it's probably fine. I get your point, Mexico and Canada are both on the North American continent, but natives from those countries surely want to avoid being lumped in with US citizens. Most US citizens don't even want to be lumped in with each other, which is why we'll often tell you what state we're from instead of just the country.

What's right about being proud for a thing you never earned by yourself? YOu can be proud to be carbon based lifeform just as well.

yeah its wrong , and kinda racist , :ha:

proud of certain people in our continent is fine but as a whole look at how the rest of the world views the USA's interference , the attitude of the people traveling to other countries is well known to be rude... fighting isn't everything , but from our jails being full to invading other countries or 'building a wall' ... it would seem corruption and fighting is everywhere but very prevalent here.

i would think one should be proud in a more specific manner instead generalize a nation , but it sure sounds like that is what i am doing now huh...

im a north american ...humm canadian ... but i am more proud of how certain groups are helping out around here instead of how the countries , nations or continents react as a whole

Why should you be proud of something you literally had no part in? You're proud of being American? How is that an achievement you accomplished? Are you also proud of having five toes on each foot?

If it's not wrong, it's freakin ridiculous.

Also, there is a huge semantic difference in saying "I'm proud to be American" and "I'm proud of America". Although, you probably should specify what you're proud of really, if you say the latter. Other than having the most advanced military in the world (and absurdly high military budget) the US can't pride itself with many flattering titles.

If you want to feel proud of something, then actually DO something yourself that you can take pride in, instead of resorting to the very last thing even the most useless dickhead can convince himself makes him better than all those brown people at least.

As American and early millennial, born during NES era, there is nothing to be wrong to be proud of American. Of course, I'm proud to be American, even our government sucks and obnoxious, especially federal government and some state government, so I'm still loving my country and a lot of respect for military, also my sister is about finish the BMT at Air Force soon so we will come to her graduation this month. For political view, I considered myself as libertarian but not full agreement with Libertarian Party.

if it means you're proud to be a (white) american, it means you are being proud of being non-white. I know some of my friends who are mixed ancestry and express their proudness of being american, because they see american identity as inclusive. at the same time, I read these questions on quora:

https://www.quora.com/Why-are-Black...sitively-but-white-pride-is-viewed-negatively

so it depends on your context. if it's to disguise your proudness of being non-white, it's almost like my fellow countrymen who are proud because they are muslims and not non-muslims like me

There is a difference in saying "I'm proud to be American" and "I love America", that some of the comments here seem ignorant of. The first statement is supposed to give value to yourself, to reward yourself with accomplishment, to raise yourself over those who have not achieved the most marvelous deed of being born within the borders of the USA.
The second statement is supposed to express admiration of your country (not yourself) for its accomplishments as a whole (not your own). It's a very different thing to say, but even so you should specify at least to yourself, why you love your country. Otherwise it's nothing more than blind faith.

As American and early millennial, born during NES era, there is nothing to be wrong to be proud of American

The US did plenty of shit in your time and it is doing plenty of shit right now. You want to pride yourself with your country's accomplishments? Then take responsibility for your country's atrocities as well and don't act like it's all on the older generations.

@munnimann You didn't read entire of my post and I'm talking about our military, not pride about our government also I mentioned that I despise the federal government and some state government but voters had final say about their government. Some people told me that EU did shit job as well, thorough my patriotism is focus on our military and support the men and women for serving our country and allies.

America is a huge continent. If you are proud of being part of that, then great. If you mean the US, then you need to change that phrasing.

@munnimann: Correct me if I'm wrong, but anyone who successfully gets American citizenship is an American, no? If that is the case then it's not simply a matter of where you're born.

  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@RedColoredStars, but what is the game about?
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@RedColoredStars, Never heard of it. Any good?
  • RedColoredStars @ RedColoredStars:
You control a kitten. You fall out the window and have to make your way back home. Solve some light puzzles, do cat things like knock stuff over and steal things, trip people up when theyre walking, pounce on birds, complete goals/tasks etc. in the process of getting back to your home.

@SylverReZ It's short but adorable imo. Im a HUGE cat lover. Can be completed in a couple of hours if just going for the main goals. But can be stretched out a good deal by exploring and doing everything there is to do and see.

So a man goes to the doctor because his boner wont go down. As he is laying in the hospital bed, with his thing propped up in the air, a fly is flying around and landing on the tip and bothering him, so he calls in the nurse. The nurse comes in, swats at the fly but can't quite reach it, so she climbs his boner to get better aim. After a few tries of swatting and sliding back down, she says sorry I cant get it. He says keep going, a few more tries, and I can shoot the fly down.
