Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

The smoke is so thick I can't see down my street despite lots of streetlights and you can't see a single star. The sky is deep dark red despite being 11.30pm. Hundreds of homes have been burned to the ground, towns destroyed, hero volunteer firies have been killed along with many civilians. Many people I know who rely on water tanks have long since run out and have to compost their business (toilet is a waste of water), and pay for very expensive water to be trucked in to keep their animals alive and to drink. Many towns on high level water restrictions and others have run out of water all together. The Batemans Bay fires have had to be fought with saltwater which is bad because it corrodes equipment and poisons the ground but there's just not enough fresh water left to fight with. Most major roads are closed due to the fires, even ones where the fires have been and gone as there is high risk of burned trees falling on roads. So everyone is basically stuck where they are, all holiday plans having to be cancelled. Haven't been able to breathe properly in a month, in ten years we will probably all have lung cancer due to having to breathe smoke 24/7. Once or twice it has looked like it was going to rain, ran outside to celebrate and to remember what rain feels like on my face, but it only lasts a minute or two and the ground is so hot and dry the little drop marks on the ground disappear quickly. All I want for Christmas is some steady rain for a few days, cool the ground, slow down the fires for the severely under-resourced volunteer fire fighting force to catch up with, fill up water tanks and reservoirs, and save the starving animals and dying plants. Please....

Update 11 hours later - we are the most polluted city in the world right now :toot:

Edit - actually that's a mistake, must have been in the list because I looked it up - Batemans Bay is actually 4 times as bad.

@alexander1970 Yes Canberra and many other places did the sensible thing of cancelling their fireworks and all street festivities but stupid Sydney still did theirs despite the risk of starting fires in the city and loading the air with even more smoke. So stupid. If fires had started and there was mass panic with thousands of people crowded in the streets what do they think is going to happen? Stampedes and people being trampled and killed. And they could have given the millions it cost to the Rural Fire Service. Plus how insulting is it to the hundreds of people whose homes burned down to voluntarily shoot fire around for fun? Makes me really mad. Oh well all done now, bed time. Hope you guys have a nice new year!

Stay safe QC and if you need to vent, or need to crash for a while away from the smoke I'ld help as much as I could.

Also goes without saying many prayers for those on the front line xx

There were masks, but they sell out as soon as new stock comes in :( Yeah I should try harder to get one, maybe they have a waiting list - instead of trying different shops every few days in the hope they might have one or two

Have holiday booked up north for in a few days, hopefully the smoke won't be so bad there! And hopefully there will exist a sequence on roads that are still open to get there :-p Have to come back for work and to finish moving though unfortunately

Best of luck through this shitty situation, Quantumcat. We have our share of uncontrolled wild fires in Canada in the summer time, but never quite as bad as what I see in the news coming from Australia. I've only seen a smoke-filled sky once over Montreal from wild fires in northern Quebec, and we could still breathe rather easily. I hope the situation improves quickly for you.

@leon315 Yup, Sydney had air quality 12 times the hazardous level for smoke, several homes lost, lives have been lost already, towns evacuated

For anyone wanting a summary so far, click Here

These fires are just as bad if not worse than the 2009 Australian Black Saturday Fires

Of the Thirteen minimum fatalities, 3 of them have been firefighters

I never understand people celebrate those holidays. I don't because I don't liked this World. This world is gone berserk.

I am enjoying my life on my own everyday to be positive.. not just for holidays.

Dang... stay safe!

Also the hell is wrong w/ Sydney's government. Ongoing fires and then thinking that holding a firework display is a sane thing to do.

Anyway uh... happy 2k20, such as it is.
