My experience with PSVita 2011- Present.

During E3 of 2010, We were revealed about sony new portable console called the Playstation Vita. The vita was the sucessor to the playstation portable. It seem to feature more features than the system such as dual analog sticks, Built in dual camera for pictures and Augmented reality, Touch screens and rear touchpad, as well as a gryosensor for more was to play games. During the time of showing, it seem to me like a cool idea, but i always trusted nintendo with mobile consoles. It also featured mobile data plan (say it with me everyone) Exclusive of AT&T. (There it is) And it would launch feburary 2011 one month before Nintendo 3DS. I didn't buy one that year cause i wanted 3ds and super mario 3d world which i got in november for my birthday.

During the beginning of 2012, I had found out that Phantasy star online 2 would be available for PSvita. "Oh really? I hope is free to play online, none of that subscription stuff if it is i'll get one when it comes out." So i decided to focus on getting one. A month later in feburary, I saw that Sony was celebrating the 1 year release of ps vita with a special sale on Playstation store. They had some games on sale that i decided to want. It made me get the psvita sooner than expected. Ultimate marvel vs capcom 3, Blazblue, continumm shift extend, Ninja gaiden sigma plus, all on sale for less than the price of a new console and game? Yes i had to have it. So i did. I ordered a vita, with a 32 GB memory card, and downloaded the games, for awhile i was liking it the more i got used to it. During that time i had playstation plus, and new games were free to play every month, not to mention huge sales. But still no sign of Phantasy star online 2 for ps vita.

Mid 2014, E3 is around again, during that time, they show new games, and on playstation store, there always sales advertising the existing ones as well as some themed holidays as well. Before this time i just started taking vita play slowly since not having enough interest to play them, until i saw Ys, Memories of Celceta on sale. "There is a YS game for psvita?" I watched the video and wanted to play that game, but the only problem was.... "This look like it should be played on a console, why is this a mobile game?" I had to play it so i got it. I was happy to play it, so fun and still is. Very good action rpg game. Just wish the characters talk more. That was the only problem i had with it. I still wondered when Phantasy star online 2 would be releasing.

Later that year, during october, they announced the playstation TV. To be honest i thought it was a TV for playing playstation games, on and was gonna be expensive. But they confirmed it as a "Micro console" With the main focus of being supported by online on demand streaming services. While the psvita can use hulu, netflix, youtube, and crackle or whatever else, it was mainly focused to stream ps4 games from PS4 consoles. (Why no support for ps3?) And also stream games from cloud service that require subscription, kinda like playstation plus but was seperate service and not combined or required for the other. But the reason why i got one was that it was able to play ps vita games on tv and it was $100 which is not too bad. The ouya was also $100 and i got it, guess maybe i am supporter of the mini consoles, as long as they don't cost too much. "Oh wow, now i can play ys memories of celceta and phantasy star online 2 when it comes out."

When i got the system, it included a ps3 controller (Wish it was ps4) And a voucher code for a lego movie game from playstation store. (I never used it, I think it expired) It also had a 8GB memory card, and internal memory. I had never bought a actual psvita game card since all my purchases were from ps store. So i had to set it up and play, and i started to play more of the vita. It was less used as inteded like the all in one streaming but i am glad it supported vita at least. Except until a extent. Not all games were playable. Ys memories of celceta was why i got one and it didn't work at first. I tried some others, But the ones i wanted to play on it didn't work either. Only a few. "Oh what? Why, i don't understand." So I noticed they had to be made or patched to work on the system, while i realized some games couldn't be played at all like Uncharted golden abyss (If you did full play through, you know why) made sense, but i wanted to play ys and it wasn't gonna budge. I used it for some classic psp games i couldn't fit on my vita, so the tv got some use after all... I still wondered where phantasy star online 2 was?

During mid 2015 i kinda wondered when the game would come out, i started to lose interest. As of now it says "Sega plans for localizing the game is delayed" So That was then, and still is now. I kept saving money waiting for it. But i decided to get nvidia shield tv, It had very great potential and processing power, even able to play All emulators well even psp for the most part, and i wasn't restricted to which games i can't play, then the PSTV fell short as well as the vita since not having games to play, i did ocasssionally look for some on the ps store since free ones were every month for plus members but just not findiing any with all the retrictions. I play the shield having so many emulators work well and even some console game ports like Metal gear rising revengence, Borderlands, Resident evil, and they also had online cloud streaming, made it even more impressive. The game wasn't coming anytime soon, i realized it.

Late october 2015 There was sales again, Tales of Heart R was a game i got, I like tales game, think is a great rpg series. So i got it. Since i had too much stuff on the memory card, i couldn't play right away until i managed some space, Had to back up some saves, and delete some games, and i was able to play it. I played it for the most part, then i stopped since i get errors of some games that don't seem to have any solutions for it. It was fustrating and just made me wanna stopped. I will admit i was bored with the system various times and hope not to be bored doing what i like, playing a video game. "No phantasy star game, no Ys on my tv, Can't play some games. What the heck is going on, bad luck?" No, it probably wasn't. Little did i know, around that time the game was patched to work on ps tv, but i never bothered to check considering the game came out 2013 and took 2 years for something like this to be done. I kinda felt like moving on.

I hate to leave games unfinished but i couldn't continue. Most of the games were ports of ones i had on ps3, Retro city rampage, Dragon fantasy book I&II Dive Kick, Ninja Gaiden sigma, Marvel vs capcom 3 Street Fighter x tekken, So many ports, only few unique games and they didn't interest me. I was better off using vita as a camera or for social apps (Which i don't have) and video streaming. While ps tv could be a useful acessory to give real tvs some appeal like a smart tv. I just had to be paitent. So i dunno what to do, just kept occupying my time until then. The vita and tv been on sleep mode ever since.

Soon i been hearing lots of negative things of vita. "PSTV Discontinued, not selling any more. Sony shifting focus, not enough support from dev." other things sounding worst. I didn't think i made a bad decision, i knew what i wanted it for, I just needed to wait and i still will. So i did. Not knowing much if people were doing any homebrew or mods for the scene, I decided to check, and there was, but since i been updating my console so much i wasn't able to use any of them. Oh well. I needed access to psn. I didn't care, i payed for a system to use and i will keep it when the time comes to need it.

Today, I wake up to visit the site, Gbatemp, which i joined only 2 months ago, so many advances in hacking of various consoles and enabling homebrew. I visit and the first thing i see is homebrew for latest firmware is here by @Voxel Studios
First time in few months i was motivated to wake up the systems from sleep mode and try using it. The screen of a vita is so memorable like windows 98 start up jingle, or modem dial up which sounds like your using a telephone. So i looked at firmware and was a bit under latest, but i just decided to update. (That how long i haven't played it) And try homebrew first time on vita, of course it wasn't as exciting as homebrew for 3ds since I just had started using that sometime in march for first time too. But it was enough to make me look at my dusty console, clean it up, and wake up from sleep to motivate me to try working with it again. :)

I might have just kept ignoring it until phantasy star online 2 was actually out. But after seeing that, homebrew news he posted made me smile and want to try again. I still had errors in tales of heart r and muramasa rebirth where game either doesn't load on startup or crash randomly. I Just wanted to format my system and fix the problem. So i did. Backed up my save data to psn cloud (Since is the only way other than copying the games along with it which would take longer with more data than just saves..... is ridiculous and i dislike it. So cryptic is very unlikable. Formatted the system and downloaded all the games again, restored the saves and i can play it again. No more problems. (I dunno what the problems were but my guess was maybe something the game loaded and was corrupted but is gone now) Now with that and homebrew made a little more interest in that system. Still wondering about phantasy star online 2 is still in delayed status. I looked to try and find a way to allow me to play ys on ps tv. Apperently there is a whitelist mod to allow all games to be played on system not just some. Even ones you can't beat or play due to control restrictions or cameras or even other gimmicks, but i wanted to play ys. Turns out the game was offically patched last october to play on system. Of course i found out today (About 1 hour 36 mins before writing this But after trying the whitelist mom) I didn't need it for that game.

The important thing is thanks to voxel news of homebrew, it motivate me to try playing it again, I am proud to say it works okay. I didn't know how much homebrew worked on the system, compared to already existing 3ds emulators. A port of genesis plux gx One of the only emulators i know can play the pier solar genesis rom i have only been able to play on wii thanks to homebrew, not to mention Game gear roms i haven't found a suitable emulator to use it for yet. (I would use a psp emulator on android tv and use a game gear emulator for psp to play it or wii genesis plus. But what about on the go?) So While i will be waiting for something that may not even be released for the system, i guess i won't be bored either.

The ps vita isn't that bad of a system. Though i wish the graphics looked better with the 3d games, Seem like only 2d sprite games looks best. Is like a one screen HD 3ds system. Compared to both, they aren't bad, but would prefer nintendo over sony be cause of support for quality games are better to me in my opinion. Since 5 years ago, lots of developers have pulled the plug on some planned projects and collapsed with employees not working there anymore and indie people also rising to more noticable place on the market and other reasons, the support for specific systems are bad. 3DS has good and fun games to play, lots of them. Wii u doesn't have as many but still good to play, ps4 has many supporters even exclusive partners that weren't previously exclusive like capcom. Xbox one is somewhere in the middle i think, and vita seem to be slowing down. Weather or not these statements are true and are just opinions and speculations based on my knowledge.

The whole purpose of this was to explain my personal experience with the ps vita. If you remember reading my experience with online gaming, and you understood that, it is a experience i wanted to share. I also wanted to show appreciation for people who are talented people able to come up with mods, exploits, hacks, develoments, homebrews, all of which you would call them, and sharing them with people like me. While most console builders like sony, nintendo, and microsoft don't want us doing things like that, is understandable that people do it, with all the restrictions and lockouts and other cryptic things that prevent actual usefulness being done with the devices, is probably why they do it, to unlock more potential behind it and give it more quality appeal to even consider buying your overpriced consoles with so many overpriced accessories (PSVITA MEMORY CARDS ARE ALMOST $100 FOR 64GB) Is just reaons like this why i feel like sharing my experience would be okay to let someone know how the changed others either in positive or negative ways. :)

I want a handheld gaming system with a tablet sized screen, like a 8 or10" screen, with controllers that can detach like the Switch.

@BigOnYa i was legitimately trying to scratch my leg, this is reminding me of that cylinder post

I don't see the buzz about a square screen personally. I think there will be a review on the site within a few weeks though if you are interested.

I've put down the money on the Odin 2 Mini since I just love that Vita form factor. Loved the power of the Odin 2 but the size always put me off, this one seems exactly what I've been wanting.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
I don't care about the square screen it's just nice to hold something you don't have to stretch your arms a foots length
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
All these things expecting to be super huge is overrated just run a type c cable to your TV if you want a big display or in my case screen mirror it
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
On the go tho I meant, I use my 10" tablet and a Bluetooth controller for retro gaming while sitting on my porch or on long car rides sometimes. Easier on my eyes than the Switch screen.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
My point is we already have enough shit with big displays having something pocketable with up to ps2 would be fine on the go

Ken unless the games are made for that screen size most suck on a screen that size... Having a square screen and being brighter and higher res helps but it's not a cure all, text is tiny bullets are tiny, your.... Well lol
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
You can stretch to fit probably it's not all bad that they make it seem to be
