My new laptop

So in case people haven't noticed, I wasn't as active. I know, crazy shit right? Well that's because the screen on my laptop broke and my old Acer C7 Chromebook was finally starting to show her age. So I had to buy a new laptop! So last night I got an HP Notebook - 15-f387wm!
It's not the best laptop on the market, but has more than enough for me considering all of my games ran just fine on my shitty 1.1 Dual-Core C7.
Specs time!
AMD Quad-Core A8-7410 APU with Radeon R5 Graphics (2.2 GHz, 2 MB cache)
8 GB DDR3L-1600 SDRAM (2 x 4 GB) (upgrade RAM myself 5 seconds after buying it)
AMD Radeon R5 Graphics
500 GB 5400 rpm SATA
SuperMulti DVD burner
15.6" diagonal HD WLED-backlit touch screen (1366 x 768)
Full-size island-style with numeric keypad
802.11b/g/n (1x1)
Integrated 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet LAN
1 multi-format SD media card reader
2 USB 3.0; 1 USB 2.0; 1 HDMI; 1 RJ-45; 1 headphone/microphone combo
Running openSUSE Leap 42.1, I uninstalled Windows 10 without even booting into it.
Here's my desktop!

It's not the best, but good enough for me!

Cool, I plan to buy a computer that has Linux preinstalled on it. I found a nice website too.

it's www.system76.com if you wanted to know.

Also LINUX MINT FOR DAYS!

Tell me, is linux anything like dos caus i already hate using dos on windows. :glare:

I hate it for these exe programs and bat files. I tried to use a emultaor to play word munchers dos and i could never figure out how to make it run. I hate dos! I think you get the point. Can't even get a game to run in retroarch dos either on my adroid.

I wanted to buy a rasberry pi since they had some for cheap but with no windows i wouldn't know how to use it, i hear it comes with linux but that is all, not so good with it. :unsure:

Everyone use it as a programing thing, i dunno anything about programming since i tried asm a soinc rom to enable spin dash and other stuff. :P

Arch Linux like DOS, where you have to configure the the entire OS yourself. But most distros aren't like Arch.
I am running Mint myself, which is extremely easy to use and something I would suggest to anyone starting out on Linux

I like everything but the AMD, should've search for one with Intel i7s. Also how much did you pay for it?

@Sonic Angel Knight

Trust me when I say Linux can be easy if you choose the right version. Mint was made to be easy to use from the get go, though if you want another that is easy to use there is Ubuntu although I like Mint better in my opinion.

Also I'm kind of a Linux noob myself so I'm on the same boat :3

@cooroxd The Laptop I wanted before was an i7, but it ended up jumping up in price after school started, so I had to settle. The laptop I have now I believe was $299
Trust me, I wanted either an i5 or an i7, but this was the best I could get in my price range,

@XavyrrVaati I can't even use Windows anymore. I just don't like using it. Although I don't care if others do use it,

So if i bought a linux computer like maybe rasberry pi, would i be able to use it for like consumer use, like windows? I don't want it to look anything like dos, no black box with white text where i have to type and memorize commands to navigate drives and such. I already had enough trouble rooting my android tablet.
:ninja:

Raspberry Pi can be plugged into monitors. People make emulation machines out of them all the time. But it really is meant for tinkerers. I use Windows for it's proprietary software, but i can use any OS really. They tend to come naturally to me.

Yes, Linux Mint looks as the new os's do and has a GUI. There is a terminal but thats just an app. You will see what I mean if you install it. If your computer is old (Since it was running MS-DOS if I heard right) and decide to get Linux Mint, get the MATE desktop version and for a newer computer get the cinnamon version.

I don't think your laptop broke because it was old, I think it broke because it was an Acer ;). But anyways, whenever I get around to sorting my PC and installing a new graphics card (that isn't 10 years old :blink:) I'll be joining the Linux master race... aaaand probably have Windows XP on there too so I can play a bunch of old games I couldn't run on 7. B-)

Pretty sweet machine! ..and i got to say..i looove your wallpaper :)
Enjpy your machine, treat her good :P

@Bubsy Bobcat
Nope, I was the one who kind of broke it. It came with a 16GB SSD. But 16GB wasn't enough and SSD's back then were 3X more expensive than an HDD. So I threw a 500GB HDD into instead and 6GB of RAM. Which slightly broke the case fitting the HDD in there and the poor fans didn't know what do with the new RAM. So I had to use an external fan to keep it working. But my fan broke and keeping the poor girl alive was just being abusive. So I am keeping it aside for distro testing.

@Sonic Angel Knight
Sorry, I wasn't ignoring your questions, I was actually doing some pretty heavy drinking last night as I spent the night trying to cram as much back on this laptop as possible.
Only advanced forms of Linux like Arch and Gentoo are command based and require you to set everything up yourself. Otherwise 90% of the distros on the market are rather simple and come with a GUI. Linux Mint is actually extremely userfriendly and not only come with everything you need out of the box, it even comes with features like a Driver Manager that will actually look for your drivers for you and install any that Linux doesn't cover.
I suggest getting a Raspberry Pi 3 if you want to really start learning without messing with your computer, but also because they are freaking cool and emulation on them is fun. But at the same time, Linux can run off a LiveUSB(CD,DVD) and not actually touch your hardware, allowing you to get the Linux exuberance without the need to install it.

Adding +1 to the count of people who just immediately nuke windows on a new computer (or buy PCs HDD-less or OS-less if possible, since SSDs > HDDs)

The one most important tip I can give as a linux guy myself is that linux isn't windows. Chances are, if you go to browse the internet for software, you're doing it wrong. The other thing I'd advise; do not be scared of black boxes with white text. They are your best friend, and with a bit of learning, much faster to use than GUI in most cases (though you don't need to.) In general, mint/ubuntu/debian tends to limit exposure to terminals. The idea that one needs terminals is outmoded. But they're ultra useful, seriously.

Funny thing about that wallpaper - I remember having that one set as my wallpaper about three years ago, heh.

@chaoskagami
I've actually been a hardcore Linux user for over 11 years now (11 years since July.) I haven't run a Windows system since then and any computer I get, I either order without an OS or just nuke Windows without even booting in it, because I don't care what version of Windows it's running, I don't want it.
I use Linux for everything from gaming, web browsing, programming, ect.

*hi-fives*

I really hate microsoft stuff. The biggest reason I use linux is nigh everything can be automated. Windows...not so much unless you like autohotkey.

Plus, the "games don't work" argument is becoming increasingly obsolete. I have to say, props to valve on that.

*paws back*
I started using it during my XP years, but Vista was so shit that I just couldn't use Windows anymore. So I started using Linux. Since then I've used countless different distros/spins. I actually just spent 2 hours trying to set up a program on Window for my friend and failed because the Windows version was just shit. Compared to the 10 minutes it took to compile on Linux.

All the games I play work, so I have no complaints on games.

When it comes down to distros though. I normally use simple ones like Linux Mint for my personal computers and more complex ones like Arch and Gentoo on my project computers. I really don't see the need for something tedious on my own personal PC because that's not what I use it for.
