My tooth literally exploded

So, I've been having my wisdom teeth come in the past few months. After a lot of cancelled appointments, I finally had one set for the start of next month. They'd be removing 4 teeth (back molars), and then I'd go back in a few weeks to have another 4 (wisdom teeth) removed. So, in total, a removal of 8 teeth. Now, when you have eight teeth too many in your mouth, it kinda gets cramped. I've been having chronic headaches related to it--I just take an aspirin and wait out the pain, but it's been nothing debilitating. I also was removed from my mom's work's medical insurance, because it was getting too expensive for full coverage. Which, according to the dentist, was a bad move, because only having dental insurance won't cover everything. So, I had to further put off any appointments until that was settled and everything could be paid for by insurance.

Until today.

My tooth shattered as I was laying down.

It. Hurt. A. Lot.

There was so much pressure in my head from the wisdom teeth trying to force their way through, that my (according to google) a Premolar tooth was taking the brunt, and apparently couldn't hack it one more second longer. Cuz as I was on my bed, my head hurt something awful, and then I heard a pop and the pain instantly went away for about 10 seconds before getting even worse. The tooth had just exploded in my mouth. I was stunned for a few seconds before sputtering about and spitting out the remains of my tooth.

More than half the tooth is just straight gone. I dunno what they even do for that, but my parents are getting an emergency appointment with a dentist this week, supposedly. I dunno what even the heck. I'm still a bit dazed and tearing up from the shock and pain, but I needed to just...vent, because oh my gosh my tooth seriously just freaking shattered.

Holy Crap! Well, I've had a less painful but still painful experience. While at college (which is in the middle of nowhere), I went to sleep only to wake up 2 hours later in extreme pain. My tooth had chipped and was causing pulsating pain. For like 2 weeks, it just majorly sucked ass, especially with classes and finals about to show up. I had to take aspirin and other painkillers, only to find out that the bottle I had was expired. Finally I borrowed a friends aspirin and got to a dentist, which fixed my tooth. Still I would never want to repeat that for anything.

@Fusion

The nail is made of heavily keratinized dead skin cells

The tooth is made of enamel, dentin, cementum and dental pulp. None of which contain significant amounts of keratin.

I was looking into what you said, but I'm not sure which part you're saying is the same.

I feel your pain.
Both my 2 front teeth exploded on some concrete once (22 years ago) ,It's the worst pain I felt in my life. Actually I need to get implants as the crowns are now coming loose and I'm expecting them to fall out any day now.
Problem is implants are going to set me back £2000 each tooth so I'm looking at £4k (which is not gonna happen any day soon)

Hope you get it sorted asap ; )

since I live in Indonesia, the surgery is much much cheaper than elsewhere. when I had my surgery in 2003 probably, it cost me roughly $60. now, I heard the price is around $300. if it's expensive, consider visiting a dentist in another country.

If it's one of the ones that was going to get pulled? It will wind up getting pulled. If it wasn't one of that ones you were planning to get pulled? Probably a root canal and a crown.

Spoiler with regards to the wisdom teeth, it goes into detail about what I went through when I had mine pulled. I know a lot of people are really squeamish when it comes to dental stuff (I sure as hell am) so be forewarned. That said, you may have to go through something similar, so you may or may not appreciate being armed with knowledge of what your procedure might be like.

So I had my wisdom teeth removed, all 4 at once, because two were coming in crooked and one was impacted, almost sideways into the molar in front of it. I was given laughing gas and 14 shots of novacaine. top jaw left side by wisdom tooth, top jaw right side by wisdom tooth, bottom jaw left side by wisdom tooth, bottom jaw right side by wisdom tooth, behind bottom lip, behind top lip, roof of mouth. 2 shots in each spot. I was very sufficiently numbed from that, so the only thing I could feel was just a lot of pressure during the procedure. The crooked ones and straight one were easy, basically gets yanked side to side and then down/up to remove. The impacted one was the "fun" one, they had to cut the gum around the tooth a bit to get better access to it, then crack it into a few pieces, and continue the removal of it then. That one was stitched up with dissolving stitches, beings as it was 10-12 years ago I don't remember if the other ones were or if chomping down on the gauze just took care of it.

You also will possibly have the ability to get general anesthesia rather than the laughing gas. Certainly better for peace of mind I think but I did OK with the laughing gas. The laughing gas, I was still fully coherent, but just gave literally 0 fucks about what was going on. I was audibly counting each tooth that was removed. Also had a bit of a time dilation effect on me, it felt like the whole thing only took about 10 minutes, in reality it took closer to an hour.

One of the most inconvenient parts of it is your mouth will probably be propped open back by your jaw with a plastic kickstand sort of thing so you don't accidentally close your mouth. This, to me, I think was the worst part of the whole thing, because I think it was the main contributor of what led to an incredibly sore jaw that I could barely open enough to get even a spoonful of broth into my mouth. I just kept trying to open it more and more and eventually got it all stretched back out.

I went back to eating somewhat normally the day after the procedure. The oral surgeon was taken aback when I told him that during the followup. He said something to the effect of "... you shouldn't have been able to recover that fast from it". I wouldn't recommend trying to push it though, only go as far as you are comfortable with. One VERY IMPORTANT THING like :!::!::!::!::!:DANGER WILL ROBINSON:!::!::!::!::!: important is DO NOT DRINK WITH A STRAW or put any kind of suction on your mouth after the procedure for a bit. It opens you up to the possibility of dislodging the blood clots in your gums while you heal and that is apparently incredibly painful. Start off with soft foods and mild liquids. The first day I ate a can of refried beans for dinner, and just drank some water and gatorade.

That really sucks that that happened, I hope you're managing OK :( Good luck with everything, I hope it goes relatively smooth. At least as smooth as an oral procedure like this can go lol.

when I had my surgery some decades ago, fortunately, I was given painkillers that I needed to eat every 8 hours or so. the dentist also recommended to put ice on your tooth to accelerate the healing process. I only had one tooth removed on each surgery, I couldn't imagine having 4 teeth removed simultaneously!!

D
You should really go see a dentist. Also be careful, aspirin dilates blood vessels risk for internal bleeding.

Dear god, I cringed so hard reading that. I hope against hope that you get a good painkiller prescription because I can only imagine how bad that kind of toothache has got to be.
Feel better soon

ive had a tooth explode before
i was eating a banana when it happened
felt good

Go to the dentist or a hospital and have it checked out !
A mate of mine had a numb jaw for several months after a wisdom tooth problem.
As in no solid foods and drooling a lot :)

Personally I had one act up on me, went to the dentist, she tried to pull it herself :(
She broke half of the wisdomtooth off and then couldn't grip it anymore. Trip to the emergency room showed the root was weirdly shaped, so they had to drill holes around the tooth so they could wedge it out.

If you can afford dental care or live in a country that actively encourages people to go to the dentist, save yourself a lot of hassle and just go ! Will save you lots of pain later.

I actually had the root canal done yesterday! For all the scary intimidating things you hear about that type of dental surgery, it wasn't that bad. They numbed my jaw twice over, drilled into the nerve of the tooth, removed it, drilled more, and put in a filling and crown. Took about 3 hours, and the tooth is still sore, but it's entirely fixed up. All for the low low cost of...3000 dollars. Glad I had insurance!
