Overcoming My Fear

I really want to get over this fear cause its like, tearing me apart and I don't want to be afraid anymore. I don't want to feel the way I am now and I really want to get over it. I have a huge fear of horror movies. I know what you're thinking, horror movies are meant to scare you/excite you but I have a huge problem. I'm not sure if its common or maybe its just me but I don't know. But I need advice.

Now horror movies are meant to scare you and everything, but when I watch a horror movie I get totally scared its not even funny. I hallucinate in my mind that its real and that they're out to get me and everything even though I know its fake. I can't sleep at night for a few days when this happens. This happened today when I watched The Grudge 2, knowing very well I have this problem (this happened before with Ghost Ship and Scary Movie 3 which I'm ashamed cause that's not even a horror movie). And now I'm scared shitless.

So how exactly can I get over this fear? Or is it a fear at all and its natural? I just don't know anymore..

It sounds like maybe you should see a psychologist. If Scary Movie 3 is terrifying you, there is probably something wrong.

Maybe it's related to something that happened when you were little (watching a really scary film etc).

Cast the spell "Riddikulus" and turn your fear into a joke. Or, use mind over matter......make up your mind that it doesn't matter.

Seriously though, I can't relate. I might get surprised by something jumping out from behind something in a movie or game, but they never really "scare" me.....at least not since I was very young, like 10 or so. The best a game has ever done is sorta creep me out. That would be the Silent Hill series. But those were a kind of thrilling creepiness for me and not a scary one. I guess I just don't scare easily.

But I do know that this is a very real problem for some people. Like at Halloween, my friend and I took his kids to a haunted house. He and I had fun and laughed a lot, but my friend's two daughters were terrified, even though they knew none of it was real. Especially the younger one....she's about 14 or so. I even saw a few boys who appeared to be scared.

I don't know what to tell you other than to try and realize it's all fake and that nothing in a movie or game can really hurt you. I also don't know how old you are, but if you're young, you'll likely grow out of it.

It didn't exactly terrify me, it just freaked me out a bit. I was able to sit through Scary Movie 4 just fine but Scary Movie 3 kinda freaked me out. (Probably because I was like..13/14 but even so..)

I see what you're saying. I know its not real but for some reason, I'm thinking that it is. That's my problem.

i think you need to just get yourself more familiar and come in contact with the lovely genre of horror. Just keep watching horror movie after horror movie and keep them coming no matter how scared you get. After a weekend full of rented horror films like maybe 6-8 I promise you will be completely stud.

I also recommend the horror movies that are obviously not true but still are slightly creepy like Hills Have Eyes. That way, you can still justify to yourself that what's happening in the movies isn't real but you're still watching horror and getting the fright out of your system. It seems rediculous but try it. It might work really really well. It will be good for you. It's like one of those things that's like "Fuck this, I'm not gonna be afraid anymore and I'm gonna prove it to myself by doing it now and watching like 10 horror movies in a 2 day period" Just do it. It's good and you will finally rid yourself of this dumb fear.

Come tell us how it went.

I used to and still get kinda freaked out by certain shows and movies and then I can't go to sleep afterwards but that is only because my mind races about it and my house is semi-haunted.

However, I have never heard of something like that, I think you need to see a psychologist or something, maybe something very horrible happened to you when you were younger and just can't remember. I know the reason why I can't watch shit like that because my brother freaked the shit out of me when I was like 6 years old, he told me that there were ghosts coming into our room (we shared a room at the time) and that they were hovering over me and he had tried to get them to go away. Of course, afterwards he told me he was only trying to freak me out and it was all fake but young kids will believe anything. So I believed him even though he said it was fake.

That is just why I can't watch those types of things all the time, if its in the day its fine but right before I go to bed, I can't do it.

Uh, I used to be scared of zombies, until I played lots of House of the Dead 2 & 3 Returns. Now, I can't get enough of horror. Are you scared to watch it with a friend/date/relative too?

Your fears are a very natural thing.
Fear stems from the self preservation instinct.
There's absolutely nothing "wrong" with you.

Some people claim that they are afraid of nothing at all.
These people are either lying, or they're insane.

The real problem you're facing is inside your head.
Since fear begins with discomfort, what you need to do in order to change this instinctive response is to address that initial discomfort. Expose yourself to it, purposely. Condition yourself to it.
Horror movies, books, and games can only hurt you as deeply as you allow them to.
That control is always in your corner. The 'trick' is to realize this fact, then take hold of it, and then to exploit it.

This problem will not disappear overnight.
Keep working at it.
I wish you luck, my friend.
