Paper straws better not be the future

So the whole world is up in arms about plastic straws. Something about turtles and the environment and whatever. Doesn't make sense to me. However, the other day I had the privilege of using a paper straw. That thing was the grossest thing I've ever had. It was so dry I felt like I needed a drink of water after using it. I imagine if you leave one sitting in a drink long enough, it will dissolve into a papery-clumpy mess of disgusting liquid. In conclusion, give me a dang plastic straw.

Apparently the straw is too small and light to be recycled with current machinery.

It’s the people that buy beverages from places like Starbucks and McDonald’s every single day that are ruining it for the rest of us. Paper straws are terrible.

my wife and I use metal straws in our house. I have no problem giving up plastic straws if it keeps them out of the land fill. I have used paper straws at restaurants and I really didn't notice any problems with them. I live in a large city in California and the amount of plastic at the dump when i take shit there with my truck is insane.

There are degradable plastic straws. That's nice. But why people need straws? (I know there are medical reasons for some people, that is unavoidable).

Kids need straws so they don’t spill......as much. Straws are also needed for coffee as to not stain your teeth.......as much. Also, straws are needed so lipstick doesn’t get smeared.........as much. I’ve seen all of these.

@andeers biodegradable plastic is proven to be bullshit and doesn't degrade naturally, only in recycling plants and such. It isn't any better than normal plastic for the planet

Paper straws still need to die tho

Straws aren't even really the issue. That study that threw the USA and lobbiests into a frenzy was a study done by an 11 year old for school, 9 years ago. He called 100 people and asked them how many straws they think they used in a year. The project then lead him to make estimations based on the population of the USA to estimate how many straws the US uses as a whole in a year. EVERY major news outlet reported on that study and preached it like gospel. Now everyone is in a plastic straw panic. Don't get me wrong, we shouldn't be polluting the earth and ocean with plastics but straws are not really a huge part of the problem.

Makes sense, a straw's like what, a couple of grams? And it's not like everyone uses a dozen straws a day

@grey72 there are biodegradable plastic straws that last something like 1 hour or so. They are proven and maybe that straws are the future.

@andeers Do they get soggy like the paper stuff? If they do, that's stupid and just use paper straws, McDonalds and whatnot

Nope, they feel plastic. There are also edible straws that feel pretty normal when drinking something

Now, now, everyone. I'm sure we can come to a reasonable conclusion that benefits the drinker and the environment.

which is why we must now all use Sour Punch Straws to drink EVERYTHING.
