Please play "The Last Story" (Wii)

To clarify, my intention here is not to write a review of this game. This is a summary of the game, if anything. I've looked all over Discord for players to play this game online, to no avail - and this game is an absolute gem for anyone interested in action games, RPG games or story-driven games. The game's 6-player versus and co-op functionality both work online via modern-day Wiimmfi; however despite my best attempts throughout this week, I have found nobody who's able to play.

Why am I writing this then? To cut a long story short, since you didn't click on this for a review, The Last Story is a good game. It's actually very good. After playing it through, I would say that the game has its flaws but what it does right, it does so well that it overpowers its drawbacks. In some respects, The Last Story still has not been emulated by any other game and remains a unique mix of RPG and modern, real-time combat with a story that forges bonds between the characters which make the player feel a true connection with them, woven into some really nice hand-crafted environments from castle to caverns. But while I recommend everyone with a Wii at least gives this game a try, that's not exactly why I'm writing this blog post.

This blog post is, honestly, a bit of a last resort to see if I can find anyone interested in playing The Last Story online with me. If you're on the fence, practically any reviews online will tell you that this game is good. It was made by the creator of the original Final Fantasy with the composer from that game as well, and focuses on throwing himself back into that mindset when he created FF - but with experience, new tools and new ideas. So as you can tell, this game is at least worth looking into if you have a sliver of interest. You can play the game online using an easy-to-use Wiimmfi patcher of your choice, whether that's patching an ISO or using an on-the-fly disc patcher.

So to summarise, if you have even a small interest in this game, I recommend you give it a try. It's worth dusting out the Wii (or Wii U!) for, and I'd love to be able to play with more people online in a game which, after I decided to try it (as someone who is usually not a fan of RPGs) I got hooked until the end, and I'm sure there are more people out there who will have a similar experience if they give it a try. It would be really nice to play this game online, even once, and I'm sure it would be fun for everyone involved. Let me know below if you're interested!

EDIT: Here's a link to the Discord server I have created for the game: https://discord.gg/n4ybGcJ

The game really deserves a sequel, and I enjoyed it a lot. May play it on Dolphin (it is one of the most demanding to run on there) but looks fantastic in HD :P

If you're looking for people to play online with, I could always pick it up and give it a try

That's a no from me big chief. Too lazy to set my Wii back up and Dolphin hates my computer.

the game is very good (like you said), but the main issue in my opinion is the lack of setup.
You don't have enough information on the world you live in, you don't know its past, and won't know its future, only one town and no big world exploration.
it's like a slice of life in a (could have been) interesting world. it felt short and lacking.
the full game could have been middle chapters of a more complete game story. On the other side, short games are good. you can play and complete the story without spending 200H on a single game. it's focusing on the story, nothing else. no long side quests etc.

other than that, and the maybe obvious cliché of the story, it was a very good game engine for the Wii. it felt live, people in town are great, animation and story, and even dubbing is great!
gameplay is good too.

I never played online.

@WiiUBricker @the_randomizer @kikongokiller @Captain_N I'm thrilled at the interest. It's a gem of a game - if you guys want to play online sometime, I'd be happy to organise a game night this or next weekend. This game works online with Dolphin, by the way -- I don't know if Wiimmfi automatically bans Dolphin users (I recall it did at one point at least for Mario Kart Wii) but even then, we could use an alternative such as WFZwei, which is functionally identical and works with Dolphin.

@Memoir Ah damn. Yeah - it's a shame this game is so demanding on Dolphin, there's not much they can do about it :(

@Cyan Yeah, now that you remind me, there were definitely some shortfalls in the story. There were decrypted texts to tell you about some of the historic past, but the game ended on the basis that you won't need to know much about the future because you've achieved your happy ending because it's the "last story". The side quests, unless we're counting the few optional chapters, were not very interesting either. I'd also say there were some vague parts of the story towards the end of the game and a disappointing turnaround from pointing the blame at the "system" to focusing on one or two main antagonists with "It's ME you should worry about!" and one or two other tropes. But I'm willing to set those complaints aside because the gameplay has a feverish pace and feels really good in motion, and aside from my complaints the story was interesting and the characters established bonds and had satisfying chemistry unlike almost any other game I've played.

I've never played online either, and I was worried prior to writing this post that I may never get the chance to play it online - which is why I'm glad there was such a response to this. It's nice to see people who are interested in this game too! :grog:

Well @ all of you, would you be interested in a game session sometime? I could organise it via Discord if that's easier but if not, the Wii forum here will do fine

Awesome, that's exactly what I wrote this post for (as well as to ask for online players). I hope you enjoy this game as much as I did when I picked it up recently :)

I haven't turned on the Wii for a while (for non-gaming related reasons).
I will do so in the coming week or weeks and see if I can get the on-the-fly-patch working. I've played through the campaign (normal) but don't really know the online mode.

Me neither, I've actually got it set up as a Wii U WiiVC inject with gamepad and Wiimmfi patched just because it's easier than digging out my Wii.

The online mode is for up to 6 players (so everyone who's responded and then some) and works for co-op boss rush as well as a deathmatch versus mode. I'll private message all of you about what time suits and I'll get back to you - but because of the short notice it'll probably be next weekend or Friday. My weekend schedule is getting busy now but my evenings (GMT evening times) should be clear, so my preliminary time is between 9 and 11PM on Friday or Saturday. If anyone is free for that sort of time frame, you can like this comment or comment about it. :)

I'll join a session if anyone else wants to. I just got it so I'd need to learn how to play, and how to pl.ay online

Another question too, but is the new game plus mode infinite? What I mean by that is if you complete ng+, does it start over again in another ng+ mode or are you stuck before the final boss?

I think this game kind of fell by the wayside when Xenoblade blew everyone's socks off. Like, I think it was Xenoblade, this game, and another one that was a part of Operation Rainfall, right?

I hate how they locked so much stuff behind online play when by the time the game was released in the west, you only had a couple of months left to give it a try and I never got the chance. The game was really good though. I got both Xenoblade and The Last Story, for some reason I can't remember I never got Pandora's Tower, but either way I think The Last Story is far better than Xenoblade precisely because it's a lot shorter. Xenoblade's soundtrack was outstanding, but The Last Story's gameplay was much more fun. I don't regret that Xenoblade Classic Controller Pro, though!

Does anyone know about Pandora's tower? I got a coupon discount for using platinum coins on nintendo rewards (Cause i didn't want them to go to waste every month but probably will anyway) And I wasn't sure if anyone recommend it. I never hear anyone talk about it despite being part of operation rainfall.
