Ok so you all know that my father, after a year of no contact what so ever, ordered me to pilot some huge mecha and I ended my post with that. Well after that, I chickened out. Fear gripped me and made me shrink away.. I took a step back my mouth opening and closing but forming no words. I didn't want to do it, I couldn't do it. You may now all call me a coward. For that is exactly how I felt. My father gave me one more glance, it lasted a mear second but it was enough to relay his emotion. It was indifference. He did not care. It made no difference that I was his only son, his own flesh and blood, what he wanted was progress and I could not give him that.
"Bring out Rei"
"But.. Her condition is still not stable enough for her to walk unsupported, let alone pilot 01"
My father unfazed by the pleads of the woman said once again. "Bring out Rei"
With a sigh the woman signalled to a couple of guards who seemed to understand and walked out. Within a few minutes they were back with a sickly looking girl. She had short pageboy style hair, a very petite frame and striking eyes. Her arm was also in a sling, her left eye patched and head bandaged.
Without blinking or changing her blank expression she says in a quiet voice, "I'm ready to go"
I don't know if my father planned this, if he did it worked. As soon as I saw her I knew I could not let her get injured any more than she was right now. I had felt a strong urge to protect this girl, whoever she was. I took a deep breathe and said "I'll...I'll do it.."
As if expecting this my father says one word and leaves. "Good"
I knew what I had to do.
I took a breathe and told them I was ready to go. The woman nodded then the guards came once again and stood either side of me.
"Suit him up. And hurry there's not much time, the Closed-Space will not hold out much longer without Unit 01 out there to support it"
I was led back out throught the double doors and into what looked like a locker room. One of the guards then handed me a white hard looking suit that zipped out at the sides.
"This is your life-module, they higher ups will use it to moniter your status, it will also protect you from minor injuries such as bumps or bruises.. Don't depend wholly on it to protect you though.."
I took the suit and waited for the guards to leave or at least turn around.. Which they didn't. Apparently I wasn't trusted to even change on my own and was watched the whole time. When I finished I looked out expecting a smirk or a grin, for them to be joking about my laughable body, but no, they still had the same emotionless expressions.. This wasn't school anymore.. This was serious business.
I was then led back into the room that housed Unit 01. I looked around for Rei but I didn't see her, she'd probably been taken back to the hospital. I couldn't see my father either, only the woman remained. I was lead to the side of the room and up some stairs and across a bridge that went just under Unit 01's face. In the middle of the bridge there was a short extension that lead towards the chest area, and was met by a 'cockpit' from Unit 01. It looked like an egg that was opened up perfectly.
"Get in"
I was given a slight nudge towards the cockpit. With a gulp, I took a step inside. It was very dark inside, lit only by a suspended seat, that looked alot like it had come off a bicycle and looked as comfortable as if it were a bicycle seat. I sat down and saw the woman looking at me through the window of the egg, that I had climbed through. The window then suddenly slammed shut and I felt the egg moving backwards to where, I assumed, I would be taking control of Unit01.
After two seconds of silence, the darkness around me disappeared and what appeared was a a very familiar room from a very different perspective. I was looking down across the bridge and to where I was standing just a few moments ago.
After a couple of moments of static, I heard the womans voice, as if she were sitting next to me.
"Yohan, can you hear me?"
I nodded and was shocked, the whole view changed with the way I shook my head.
"Right, Unit01 has been linked up to your nervous system, don't ask how, not even we're sure of how. It seems a select few people in this world have the ability to control mech, such as Unit 01, like yourself. We've found a common link between all these people, that's how we knew you'd be able to pilot without any problems, they have the ability to manifest a heightened mental state and can be seen to use an area of the brain normally untouched by other people. We call these people, the 'Topless'.
Right now you are going to be sent up to the surface where you will face a monster we call the 'Celestials'. These are giant blue beings that wreaks havoc indescriminatly and seem unbound by the laws of physics. To reduce damage we have created a device called the 'Dividing Driver', which divides material space into an area we call 'Closed Space'. This Closed Space is nearly identical to the normal outside world but anything destroyed or damaged here will not be so in the real world. A barrier is also that stops civilians from interfereing and getting hurt, and stops panic from arising within the masses. The Celestials are contained within the Closed Space, but everytime something is destroyed within the space, the barriers weaken. This is why you must go out in Unit 01 and destroy the Celestial, before it destroys us along with all of humanity.
I know this is alot but we don't have much time, are you ready to go?"
I nod once again.
"Good, now once you get up there, fight as if you were there in person, once you think of doing an action, Unit 01 will comply. Prepare yourself, launch in T minus 10 seconds.. 9.. 8.. 7.. 6.. 5.. 4.. 3.. 2.. 1.. Good luck Yohan"
With that, I saw the floor sink away from me at such a speed that everything became blury, I felt my innards being taken down to the pits of my feet and I felt myself needing to vomit. I closed my eyes. After a few more seconds everything stopped. I opened my eyes and saw the grey tarmac of the floor. I was kneeling. I slowly stood up and towered above all the buildings. I then realised it was not only the floor that was grey. I looked around and everything was in a shade of grey. This was closed space.
