So what's with the Podcast boom?

In the last two-ish years, I've definitely noticed an enormous amount of people, organizations, and companies start creating podcasts and I want to see if anyone knows what the actual fuck is going on. I mean, like, everybody is starting one. Some of my family friends, local organizations, YouTubers, news media, and large-scale companies, like Nintendo and IGN just to name a few. Not to mention the newly-resurrected GBATemp podcast. So does anyone know what caused this big boom in the Podcast industry?

Current trend of "cutting the cord" leads to people abandoning standard TV for streaming through internet. People seek new entertainment. We are returning to the time of radio talk shows. When the video star returns to kill the radio star, we will return to TV.

Podcasts have always been huge

They definitely seemed to slow when youtube properly rose up, or if they did not slow then the content morphed drastically*. I agree with the other part -- it is a relatively easy way to create long form content and that is what the trend seems to be for (seemingly partially thanks to youtube, also with youtube shooting themselves in the foot over and over again it seems to be a way for people to monetise more easily).

*I tried to find the video I once saw where Jason Scott (a guy who does a lot of internet/tech history) had a presentation wherein he discussed when he tried to collect every podcast ever made, and for the time he got close and most of the rest were effectively pirate radio. Part of that detailed the various trends as time went on. I came up short, however do consider giving them a watch/listen if you are at all interested in that sort of thing.

Cause their easy to make and it's basically just talking with friends, so like why not. ^_^

I think it was more that for many years it was considered a dead format/concept. Like animated GIF, midi/sequenced music, ASCII and MS paint art or flash games, one in which a few enthusiasts or legacy people were still playing but most others had moved on and you got jokes like "2005 called, they want their media format back". However recent times have seen many return to it, many that were/are heavily invested in other forms of media creation (people with absolutely gigantic youtube audiences seem to be increasingly getting involved with such things) and lots of others take it up.
