Some questions about bipolarity.

Hello Tempers,

I actually want to have a mature and serious discussion about this. I was just thinking about brain disorders and for some reason kept thinking of bipolar disorder, because I kind of have some questions about it, and was wondering if anybody here is or knows someone who is bipolar. You don’t have to answer all the questions, I know they’re a bit personal. I’m just curious about how the condition affects people.

Anyway, my questions are as follows:
  • Does bipolar disorder affect you in your daily tasks?
  • Is it just mood swings every so often or is it more intense?
  • Has bipolar disorder ever lead you to take actions that you normally wouldn’t take?
  • How does bipolar disorder affect your social life? Do your friends know you’re bipolar?
  • Are you married or in a relationship? If you are, how does your partner handle your manic/depressive episodes? If not, does bipolar disorder prevent you from dating in some way?
  • Do you take medication or have some type of treatment/therapy? Does it really help?
Again, you don’t have to answer all the questions, but I’d appreciate some answers. I feel like I needed to ask someone about this.

As with most questions like this then do speak to a proper medic if it is more than idle curiosity, however as these were general questions it plays

Most of those are "depends upon the person"
Still, from those I know

1) When properly managed. No.
2) When properly managed... On the other hand mood swings is not really a useful term here -- it is the same as depression is not just feeling a bit down in the dumps but something quite profound.
3) Disinhibition and lacking filters are common so yes. It is also capable of going right up to proper psychosis so double yes.
4) For some it is quite a personal thing, for others not so much. You tend not to lead with it when first meeting someone. Social life wise it limits your choices of substances to partake in if you are that way inclined. If you have to deal with an episode it can see you miss preplanned things or things that are weekly or something.
5) Some people can't handle or don't want to handle dating someone with such a condition, and of those that can then there is a higher rate of breakup (and as extremes of emotion can trigger episodes...). That in and of itself is an effect. On the flip side many people acting as a partner will be able to see an episode coming and take steps to lessen, prevent or negate it. You can get some secondary effects like "nobody would want to be with someone like me" and if the meds dampen your emotions (more on that in a little bit) then it can change how the whole hook up bit plays out -- if the person you are with seems like they are there as they had nothing better to do then yeah.
6) Medication as a concept is universal among those I know/have met, give or take those with undiagnosed/of that have willingly gone off their meds*. Said medication is monitored for efficacy, fewer do the full bore therapy/talk jobs but you will tend to get some kind of help managing it and learning to recognise things. Medication has a bit of a thing for making people "flat" and they then find they miss the highs and lows, it probably being the main reason given for going off meds. During a high phase they often feel like they think faster, think more outside the box, are more creative and more "loving"/compassionate or something similar. Whether they actually are is a different matter, and again it can also come with disinhibition and filters being removed so it is not ideal.

*asking someone with the condition if they have gone off their meds seldom ends well. Sometimes it has to be done but think long and hard before you ask such a question of someone, and know the person very well before you make a joke along the same lines.

Thank you for your answers. I really just wanted to see from the perspective of someone who is bipolar. I wanted to see how the disorder affected them, if at all. It was out of genuine curiosity. I'll also use your advice in the future ;)
