The Old Lady

So, last night my family went to the mall to go watch some orchestra play Christmas music or something. It was alright, but as we walked out we noticed an old lady who was sitting on a bench and it looked like looked like she was struggling to get up. A man was about to help her, but my grandmother rushed towards her and offered help because "she thought she'd be more comfortable than a female." Just saying, if I was in such a bad spot that I couldn't stand up, I wouldn't give a crud who helps me. So anyway, my mom and my grandmother put one arm under hers and escourted her. They asked if she could call anyone, but she said that she didn't want to. On the way to her car, she told us that not only had she fallen three times in the mall, but she had also broken her glasses, and no, she was not wearing any when we found her. So we finally get to her white Buick and realized that we had just made a horrible mistake. She wasn't even parked in a lane, her car jutted out across two parking spots. We hadn't lead this lady to her car, we had lead her to her deathbed! She got in the car and we immediately ran back into the mall to get a security guard who could make sure she wasn't about to crash into Sears at 30 miles per hour. They didn't really do all that much though. And that's the end. I don't know what happened to her, she could have died in an accident last night, but at least we helped her out. Kind of.

Witnessing that degree of mental and physical degeneration, being reminded that this can happen to people, is unsettling. It's hard to imagine what it could possibly feel like to be that infirm and unaware, as well as how it would feel to reach a point in life where you need to be told that your incompetence with what used to be basic activities has now become a threat to others' safety. From the outside in, at least, it looks tragic.

now seriously, she must be old but unless if she has some mental problem, she wouldn't drive without glasses or anything like that

That must suck. I hate it when you start just trying to just help people out and end up questioning whether you morally did the right thing or not.

From the looks of it, though, if you and your family hadn't led her to her car, someone else probably would have eventually. Don't beat yourself up too much for it. You couldn't have known.

Yeah, we didn't really feel bad, we were just worried. And it's not that I wasn't willing to help her, it was just that we realized that we probably should have just left her when we saw her parking job.
