this is what a stack 140 i5 i7 and xeons looks like

The ebay auction where i may have gone overboard.
1-4th gen i5 i7 and xeons (some i3's for good measure too. lol). ended up scooping this mess for about 300 bucks... gonna call friends and family and ask them if they would like free upgrades.

Doesn't change what I said, though. At that point in time, AMDs processors looked good for the value. However, there were only niche reasons to go with AMD over Intel. I agree that Ryzen is an amazing line of CPUs. To me, they're Intels silver bullet. Started with a 2700x and now sitting with a 3900x. The tides have turned. Some days I do miss my i7-4790k, though.

To quote a friend of mine:
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

lol. Still free upgrades for friends families and so forth. I have access to a surplus warehouse so i can get cheap motherboards and do budget builds for friend and family too. I couldnt have asked for a better deal at 300 tbh.

Interesting little collection. Not sure how much they're actually worth nowadays as their performance/watt (and performance in general) will be very poor, even compared to entry level CPU's. Not to mention the missing ISA's and co-processors (specifically hardware codecs).

I have seen plenty i5 3rd gen's that get work done without issue tbh. 4th gen support just about every modern instruction set.
and like i said, ill be giving these out to people that may have an older laptop or desktop that needs some love.

It depends what you are doing - but now that I think about it, I've been rocking 3rd gen i7 on my mobile workstation for some time, and that is more than enough for gaming (definitely end up GPU bottlenecked before anything else).

It gets absolutely destroyed by any of the newer chips in video transcoding tasks, though. And good Lord, the heat! Activate jet boosters!

depends on the setup and situation for sure. I have an i5 3rd gen with a stock heatsink on one of my rigs and can still play a lot of games at 60+ framerates. Not gonna make the argument that they are not beaten by more modern processors but they still good for a lot of use. Hell a i5 3470 trades blows with a ryzen 2200g(2200g does have a vega igpu tho). if you already have a video card it all of a sudden becomes viable for a small humble gaming rig.
