Thoughts about otaku/anime fan stuff

Since I know a lot of people here like anime and manga, I felt I should make this post here.

Ever since I started watching anime, I've gotten a lot of strange responses from people. They range anywhere from "Hountou!? Kakoi desu!" to "You mean those stupid Japanese kid's cartoons?". I find both responses rather polarizing since I don't think anime (Or any animation for that matter) is for kids, but I also don't like the response in Japanese like I have to change my language and only like anime. I consider myself to be nerdy, but I'm a controlled nerd. I'm not the flamboyant anime fan you see going to conventions, dressing up like their favorite characters, learning Japanese with all their might, etc. Not that any of those things don't interest me. I would like to learn Japanese as a second language (Mainly for video games and the stuff you can't find with subs), but I'm not as crazy obsessed as I see some people. In all honesty, I wish I could meet an anime fan (In real life) who is normal about it like I am. I believe that people should express themselves, but I see some people take it to far and make a mockery of their respective passion. As an example, NO ONE can be a Sonic fan anymore, 'cause that makes you a sonicfag. It's a horrible cycle where a large enough group of collective weirdos ruin that certain thing for everyone else by polarizing it.

None the less, I still tell people I like anime when they ask. I'm not ashamed of anything I've ever liked, but it's painful to like something when you know a large group of crazies/weirdos also like it. You almost get the feeling people will look at you as if that is you, and it sucks.

Whats the problem of being an anime freak?

i myself dont mind being called an anime freak/geek cause i am however i wish i could commute with other geeks but there are no clubs or conventions where i live so i feel lonely some times oh well

anime are so awesome. though no one knows i love them. just my family. i don't care much about other people around me other than my family and friends. if were not connected in some way, i don't care much about their comments if they won't do me good.

I feel the exact same way! I love anime but unfortunately don't really get a chance to share the experience with others because people in my community are either anime Nazis that think dubs are created by Satan and that Naruto is the best thing evar or they're like "thats gay" because they assume that I am part of the first group.

I love anime, although apparently you wouldn't know it to look at me.
If people suddenly change their perception of me due to finding out that I like anime, then screw them, honestly...

the hate is probably because when you say anime, the average person thinks of the creepy obsessive japanophile types and the slapstick daily life teenage girl moe crap.

Let me explain better. Going to conventions for things (Whatever it may be) isn't weird. But some people are just so crazed about it they would fit in with treckies and sonicfags. Some people just take it too far, and it ends up hurting those who aren't mentally crazed about what they like.

I like cosplay...
And I am mentally crazed about what I like...

I'm an Otaku and really don't care what others think. I openly read manga at school either in class, before school, or after school. If someone calles manga "anime", "anime books", or "comic books", I will correct them because it frustrates the crap out of me. I wouldn't dress up as an anime character, but if give the chance I will go to an anime convention (though I haven't been to one yet). Also, I prefer subs to dubs in most cases, though there are a lot of anime that I like dubbed (Dragon Ball Z, Fullmetal Alchemist, etc.). Also, I don't like Naruto [anymore]. I noticed that the show/manga had a lot of faults. That's pretty much my otaku self in a nutshell.

I have to agree. You're pretty much at my level as far as liking anime/manga.

Remember, the haters are going to hate. It's best to not take it too seriously, and if someone tries to make fun of what you like, deal with it (and I don't mean suck it in...unless you're weak or it really doesn't bother you)

Though, I do tend to avoid using the words "anime" or "manga" and instead I just call them... tv shows and comics. Or series. Or "a foreign thing." Depending on who is talking to me.

But inside my circle of friends, I do make a mockery of it. Like, we blast jpop while driving down roads. Problem?

yes there is a problem, thats equally as idiotic as blasting rap or any kind of music for that matter. You give it a bad name and it makes you look like a jackass and shows how little respect you have for others who enjoy it as well as the things you supposedly enjoy.

well... when one of my best friends ( she's a girl) discovered i loved anime/manga she said:

"don't you think that is childish?"

i was about to say to her : gtfo, dont even talk more to me
but then she realized that either i liked it or not, i loved it or not... i was still me... and i think that she's now accostumed to it xD

my ringphone sound is a jrock music ( gr8 story - SuG )
and in some ocassions it has ringed right in front of my friends... they though it was weird... but i said dont you like "kuduro" and such? i like jrock and jpop... i even made a presentation of it for my english classh ( oral projects - you talk about things you like, your dreams etc)

LULZ. My friends and I blasts Kpop going down the road sometimes. We get the funniest looks.

you too are part of the problem. If you actually enjoy it then why would you want to give it a bad image?

Because we're mature enough to not care what people think of us.

Edit: no one knows what it is anyway. If anything we're giving it a better image that it would receive by default. Ignorant school-age students associate it, by default, with quiet nerds who might blow up the school (since anime is unpopular, etc, for nerds, whatever). That's America's current perception of it. Now image 4 huge/ripped guys in a Mini Cooper blasting it. Case in point.

Do you know where manga and anime come from? It comes from art. It be nonsense if some are saying
anime/manga is just for kids because that would be like calling art is just for kids.

Based on the urban dictionary entries, yes. Although I'm really more of a self-proclaimed Otaku

Side note- the majority of music I listen to is Japanese, it's a curse, but I don't consider it too bad of a curse. I try to like rock, but I just can't. Also despite stereotypes, I'm Black and I hate Rap. I'm indifferent to Pop. I don't like Country. I do, however, adore J-Rock and J-Pop. There are alot of songs in English I like, but there are definitely more Japanese ones that I like.

When friends see me reading a manga in class or something, let's sayy, Death note, maybe, They'll assume that it's just like pokemon or bakugan, and tease me because of it. Even all of the other people, even asians, like me, seem to be disgusted by anime or manga.
