Video game impressions. Fire Emblem Warriors (My first one)

Haven't really done one of these in awhile, last one was about... sushi.... yeah, sushi. Anyway I guess I should try some more. This time is just another game impression. I done these before, and I gotten some comments for discussions so I'll try some more.

This time is my impression of Fire Emblem Warriors, I got it this past weekend and tried it out. This is the first Fire emblem game I purchased to play, so excuse me if my knowledge isn't as well informed as some of you fanatics out there already established. It mostly consist of relating to Super Smash Bros. (Yes marth is my favorite in that game)

To start

So the thing I want to start with is the thing that got my attention first, the presentation. Just turning on the game made my face smile. All it did was talk to me and tell me that I had no save data. (Yes I'm a simple person) I like when my games talk to me, I admit that the first time I had legitimate interest in the legend of zelda story was Breath of the wild, during the dozens of trailers and video gameplay demo at E3 in 2016, hearing Zelda's Voice made me more interested than any other zelda game, in fact it was the second one i bought with Wind waker HD wii u being the first. (I borrowed the gamecube game from classmate, that is how i know it was worth buying when it was released, and it was one of many i played on loan)

When I saw that happening, I was more interested in the story of the game than just the gameplay, but it was disappointing, in that game, only about 6 Characters was ever voiced and only during cutscenes, Zelda, the four champions, and the king. I was disappointed that there wasn't more voice dialog and disappointed in the plot. Back to this game, the start of a new game just to tell me that i have no data was charming. Also, every important character in the game is voiced, and have way more lines than the other game. (I think I'm done discussing it) So for me the presentation is something I adore, full voiced dialog. Also the little pixel character things on the map is nice too. The game transitions between cutscenes and a visual novel style storytelling which all happens so fast that I get enough story and action without ever feeling too overwhelmed.

Graphics

Next is the graphics, to me is good. Honestly I feel it isn't much different that breath of the wild or xenoblade 2 but I like it a bit more than both. I kinda have high standard for tecmo games since playing games like Dead or Alive or Ninja Gaiden on Xbox, before games was in HD, those was visually impressive. On the switch is not too bad compared to Either of those two games which has HD games on PS3, I say is on par with what I grew up with. There is some very sharp looking things in there, and stuff. ( I just wish more games stop resorting to cel shading) Special effects and even the portrait artwork is nice to look at.

Sound

What to say about the sound department. Well again, I don't know much of the iconic music that is fire emblem, I was more listening closely for music i recognize from super smash bros. I guess I didn't play long enough to hear those yet. But the ones I did hear isn't bad either. I assume most of them are arrangements but So is super smash bros. So I think it would be hard to recognize either way. Bottom line, music isn't bad. Sound effects are also not bad, voice overs aren't bad either. (And I know how everyone likes to criticize english voice acting)

Gameplay

As for the game, I can't really say I think super highly of it or super poor, is easy to play and understand. It's a simple hack n slash with some strategy elements, similar to Bayonetta games, using combination of weak and strong attacks to do combos, build meter to unleash devastating attacks. Having some RPG and strategy gameplay to it allow you to think about the process of how you play rather than just rushdown everything in sight. (To me is very minor but is there and I suppose useful if you wanted that in this kind of game) Though is just me, tutorial is clear and well placed. I would prefer they had a tutorial mode or just some instructions hint cards rather than constantly interrupt your game to explain new things, or least have a optional button to trigger tutorial, kinda like the codec in metal gear games.

Problems.... let's say pet peeves

As I said, I haven't played much, I only finished about 6 chapters, Kinda disappointed I'm not already playing with Marth, the person on the front cover of the game, instead I have characters from Fire emblem... Awakening, Chrom, Lucina, Robin (Did I get that right?) I figured I would be playing with the guy featured in the first game ever Marth, but Is just one pet peeve i guess. Another thing I don't understand is starting the game, I got a super powerful S grade weapon. I don't get it, why did I get that? I can't use it yet, how did i get such powerful weapon only starting the game? It doesn't make any sense and is just a tease to have a strong weapon and no way to use it right now.

The last thing I want to point out i dislike is the history map. After a few chapters, It was unlocked. Now I dunno what exactly it is, according to the game it is supposed to be past scenarios based on fire emblem series. So the thing I don't get is, why are there scenarios where I'm fighting my own characters? Well is not mine, but clones of the ones I have, including Rowan and Lianna! I'm pretty sure they wasn't in other fire emblem games right? Another thing to mention is why is the first unlocked history map so difficult? It is the beginning of the game, why unlock something that you couldn't bother to do yet? Also something is fishy about those arena battles. I spent about 2 hours on one of them, having to take pause breaks in between cause it took so long, I was on 25 mind you. But it just took too long to defeat Cordelia, and the recommended level for doing it was 8. Was that a typo or something?

I do want to bring to my attention that @Meteor7 and I discussed this. I asked him seeing as he was the one who did play this on twitch months ago when it came out, it only made sense to inquire about it. According to him, she may have cheated. Recovering life during the whole battle.
...... HUH!? Did i notice that? No, Could I have noticed? Well maybe, if they used numeric values for HP representation instead of a Life bar. That is just another peeve of mine. Developers, when making any game that has to do with life or hp, PLEASE USE NUMERIC VALUES. It is easier to read and tell how what is going on than a bar. I can understand if you want to hide the value of hp they have, in that case, it is fine but still I just wouldn't, since this game doesn't even tell you how much damage you are hitting them for unlike Xenoblade chronicles where it does, just use numeric values, I would have noticed if her HP regeneration was there or not if i saw numeric values, or just some kind of sign, I don't even remember that being in the description if they had HP regain or not. "Each wave of enemies will be more difficult than the last. You can leave the colosseum after the third wave to claim rewards, if you die you don't earn anything." To me, this is a hoax until I can verify it myself. If it is true, they didn't bother telling me.

Conclusion

Somethings about the game I wish they would have made clear, it's simple to do. Have some more clear descriptions "History maps are usually more challenging than the main story ones" Add that to the description when speaking about it. If enemy has any status effects, make it more obvious, (least that way, numeric values wouldn't be a issue here) Don't give me ultra powerful weapons i can't use right away. What's the point, to tease me? I mean I probably made it seem like it was bad, but Is not. I don't think is bad. But the other thing I don't get is how appealing it is to most people. Not to criticize anyone who enjoys these games but I wish to know what is enjoying and engaging about them? Leave some comments below if you wish to share why you enjoy games that play like this.

Comments

I find Hyrule Warriors a much better game. when you use impa eith her heavy ass sword it actually feels heavy. There is more depth to Hyrule worriers then Fire Emblem Warriors.
