Vim is trash

Among the Linux text editors out there, there is one called Vim. Programmers from the 90s used Vim all the time for their work, and nowadays, those programmers have formed a faction that fiercely defends Vim, and calls all other text editors inferior. I recently subscribed to a Linode VPS, and have been using the Linux terminal far more than usual, via ssh. I tried Vim. It's hard to control, used weird key combos, and is hard for your fingers to reach all the commands. At this point, it was hard for me to believe that anyone was defending it anymore. Join the cool kids, use nano!

No.
Some people are used to Vim and just like it more.
Personally, fuck it. I just use Kate and sometimes Gedit. More convenient for me.

I talked to my Uncle, who used to use Vim in the 90s, and he said that he forgot how to use it as soon as he stopped using it. That bit about the combos and hard to reach keys were his words :)

haha wtf,

Vim and Vi are essential tools on linux and should be used by everyone who seriously wants to (network) develop because once you understand the Key Combinations, you never wanna go back....
(A lot faster than any IDE, runs on nearly every system and can be run from anywhere on linux XD)

If a 15 Year old kid like me can understand the key combinations, it should also be possible for an adult to learn them....

True, to some extent. Nano also comes on almost every Linux distro, too.

The major advantages to vim are (1) it works through an ssh terminal, (2) is on virtually all *nix systems, and (3) has powerful search/replace functions through regex. Other than that, *shrug*. It's really (3) that keeps me using vim over other simpler editors.

No, Linux is not for hipsters. Mac is for hipsters. You know, those guys in starbucks with those Mac Books with giant github stickers on the back. Also, nano works through ssh too. (Vim does win with find and replace though)

i´d say mac focuses on design and serious work if you have good $$$ to pay, you will have software support ensured.

linux is the way to go with open source stuff as long as you agree many open souce licenses linux is built upon.

As for text editors, they are text editors and if they have add-ons, ok that´s great i guess. But nothing else will change. What you type is what matters.

I´d say hipster is a term applied to those who would rather use real work created by others as base for social "engineering".
