Virtual Boy

3/9/11. My birthday gift to myself has arrived. I picked up a used Virtual Boy off eBay. After about 20 minutes of playing with it, I'm starting to feel that this might be one of my favorite systems.

Here are some quick photos:

I paid $150 with shipping.

What was included:
  • The original box
  • The VB manual and saftey booklet (in the original bag)
  • The cardboard "battery" insert
  • 1x VB
  • 1x Black visor
  • 1x controller
  • 1x battery adapter
  • The stand
  • The AC adapter and controller mount (not included with the VB originally, sells for $25+ on eBay)
  • Mario's Tennis (with instruction booklet)
  • Red Alarm (with instruction booklet)
  • Panic Bomber JP (with instruction booklet)
All I can say so far is that the 3D effects work REALLY well. The unit is super fun to play and I know I am going to have a blast as soon as the Flash Kit I've ordered for it arrives.

I will be writing a short review of the VB itself for GBATemp after I have had some time to play with Homebrew on the system.

Back to gaming for me!

The VB has always been underrated in my opinion as well. I remember getting one for my birthday back when it first came out in 1995. Then later after it tanked, blockbuster was selling the rental games for it for 1$, so I cleaned up on everything I didn't have. Shame you didn't get Mario Clash yet, I loved that game:) Pinball and 3D Tetris were good too. But, I guess you'll have everything once you get the FlashBoy. Haven't played my VB in a while, but I pull it out of storage every so often and play for a few hours.

I think it would be great if they released some of the better VB games on the 3DS, but I doubt Nintendo would do that. Maybe a homebrew emulator some day? One can dream.

woah 3D gaming .
$150 for a Visual Boy .
and a flashcart too , how much did that cost you ?

i really wonder what it looks like while playing it .
not enough vids are showing that can show me what the true experience is .
the only way ; i have to actually try it :P

Honestly, it was a great system if you could look passed it's flaws of the whole red and black thing.

The people who hate on it, well, 90% of them haven't even tried it and are only basing it off of AVGN's video.

Also, if it interests you AW, Nathan Barnatt (aka: Keith Apicary) is coming out with a new music video for the Virtual Boy where he has a whole light up suit and everything.

If you play Wario Land at some point in your review process I hope you can mention it in the review. I've heard a lot of great things about that game. Happy gaming AW. :)

I'm so jealous of you right now.

its hand built by the guy who invented it. ships from the UK. all for $100.

there is a second kit being worked on that will support microsd cards and a multi-loader interface (like modern flash kits).

read about that one here: http://brennanthl.wordpress.com/project-vboot/

Never before have I been more jealous from the topic of a blog.

I fucking want it.

You seem to like old consoles alot don't you?

I've never really played the vb, I've heard of emus, but people say it hurts your eyes.

I got a VB around November on craigslist for about $75 with box, mario tennis and the wario game with it. It is a very nice system and I hope you get as much fun out of it as i do :)

i just played red alarm for the past 20 minutes. my eyes are fine. its just red graphics. i'm going to be playing with it a lot so i'll be sure to report if i have any headaches or eye problems. with the emus they require 3d glasses (i assume) and those do hurt your eyes over time.

I wonder if you could find that one rare game for the vb? I believe it was called Jack bros?

Only eye problem I ever had with the VB was your eyes get used to the darkness inside the hood. So after you've played for a while, going back into the light can be a little bit of a shock until your eyes adjust again. Besides that, I never had any headaches, eyestrain, nausea, or well, any of the bad things anybody ever says about the VB.

The PC VB emulators are okay if you want to get a feel for what the general game play was like, but there really is no substitute for seeing it in person. It's a shame it didn't do better, there were a lot of games that never got released that looked really promising (F-Zero, Mario, etc).

Like how some people who are hating on the 3DS? :P

A lot of things hurt your eyes, but I got to say (as a joke) looks like the red view of death (RVD).

Wouldn't want to carry that thing around, but who I'm I fooling, I still would want/buy that. :P

How is the game like anyways? I've never really seen any gameplay for it. It's it like mario bros in anyway?

Edit: Nevermind, I just saw what it looks like.

Odds are people bash it because it is, by today's standards, rather primitive, clumsy, and clunky. Nowadays I whip out my DS and in seconds I'm playing Pokemon for a good five hours straight. For this thing you had to do set it up and couldn't even play it for long.

I still think it looks more like a novelty or collector's item than a serious gaming device but it'd sure be interesting on the shelf and probably worth playing to see how far technology has come.
