War on piracy or common sense?

I want to start with the recent anime I seen which was Ika Musume which at first I thought was stupid but turns out to be quite nice actually and I really enjoyed both seasons and the OVA and mini episodes and I was hoping to get a mini Ika Musume phone strap but I couldn't find one but thats fine I guess since i'm already getting a Haganai one although I hope I could get one eventually since I really enjoyed the anime and I kinda want a memento of that, i'll be searching for a Win 7 theme of it though, i'm a little tired of my BRS Win 7 theme. Now onto the main bit.

After reading http://gbatemp.net/topic/335286-anti-downloading-law-passed-in-japan/ in the USN I thought to myself, was there ever a war on piracy or is it just the big corporations just shoving lies into consumer's faces and brainwashing them to believe that anyone who doesn't buy their product is the most evil thing on earth, and my personal thought is this is getting more and more stupid by the day because firstly if you believe all the statistics on piracy for any kind of media then your an idiot, companies make them up all the time otherwise if they release the real facts you wouldn't give a shit because they're so low and so far no industry that has their products pirated ever died/closed or filed for bankruptcy.

On other gaming sites that isn't like GBATemp I found all gamers actually believe the shit that the big companies shit out and why wouldn't they since no real facts have been presented to argue against that and somehow anyone who says otherwise is just as evil, lets start with the old "piracy means a lost sale", if piracy meant a lost sale then in the same logic buying from some other company is a lost sale as well and so is not buying it at all because you the consumer isn't buying it from the first company but buying from the other. Now move on to "piracy is stealing" which is wrong because stealing is taking the original product from someone while piracy is making a copy of it and then using it not taking the original product so there is no theft involved in the first place, this point also plays into how piracy isn't a lost sale. Finally since I can't think of any others "piracy is killing X industry" now anyone can claim piracy is killing their industry but if thats true then the music industry must have died when the cassette tape was made, TV must have died when the VHS had a record function, gaming must have died when you can copy the disk/cartridge to play but none of these industries have died, they're still going strong and improving throughout the years.

I had a little hope that we as gamers can put this bullshit behind us but apparently those who aren't into or has knowledge of the hacking scene will happily believe whatever the big companies spew out with their false facts and now has become so ignorant that even when you tell them it is false they will comeback with more bullshit on how piracy is just as evil as murderers and other more criminal acts which it isn't but my last point on this is, if you believe this stuff then feel free to but don't go shoving in my face that piracy is a criminal act cause it isn't the police should be out there catching murderers, rapists and other real criminals and if your gonna make them waste time on internet piracy then you should be happy living in a dangerous community but hey there is no pirates there.

Piracy is a grey area. Personally, I think it hurts game developers. Musicians not so much as it's the companies who pay the artist. But for game developers, I think it hurts them.

I mean I've heard both sides of the story, and I'm on the side that thinks they lose money for their work. I mean if people play their game for free, they're giving away entertainment and hours of manwork without being compensated for it.

But that's just my opinion. Movies I would say suffer too, but they make most of their money from theaters anyways. TV shows are the same. It takes like 5 seasons for a show to turn a profit, and majority of shows make that mark, and the networks pay them. While we watch the commercials and shows, that pays the network. But let's be honest, do they need more money?

I dont think its that big a deal, atleast not as people think. I dont know why but I feel theirs a lot of hypocrites in this subject, people who say its wrong to pirate games usually are the same people who watch movies on the internet, or download all their music. Its stupid to say its evil or a sin or anything. Its just a morally questionable subject that in my opinion, shouldnt be illegal, frowned upon, but not illegal.

Also, I dont know how you aussies do it, but in the US we dont really have police going around arresting people for pirating a game :/

Maybe the FBI, if your a big time pirate but most of the time nobody really cares.

I've heard people say that cheating in a video game makes you a horrible person and it should be punishable by law. People on the internet will post the stupidest shit sometimes, because apparently people think it should be a crime to have different opinions from the poster.

But more on-topic, I have seen instances in which piracy has had a significant negative influence, mostly with small gaming studios or titles that were being tested in a new market.

I'll give you plenty of credit there. I recall someone at work went off on how pirates and various devs are ruining games for everyone and how they are criminals etc, when I turned around and pointed out the complete Beatles and Led Zeppelin collection on his ipod I know someone else gave him he went off on one about it isn't the same

Agreed with both of you there, as music has been quite easy to share for many years people seem to think borrowing a CD and ripping it is a completely different thing. For years albums have been passed around and copied onto cassette or CDR or MP3 players and it is just a background part of the industry- it hurts the labels but gives a lot of pretty effortless free advertising to the acts (some of whom have been caught leaking the new album to torrent sites themselves) gaining them an audience for live shows.
For TV shows, it was only the death of the home VCR that prevented people passing copies of aired shows between them, I am pretty certain there wasn't a noticeable jump in ratings in the few years between home taping and stream/ torrenting.

The main thing about piracy in its modern form is that it is a lot easier to track down who has done it, and there are still a lot of people who are kept in the dark about how it works. Of all of the people you know only a few know how to torrent the latest album, stick the latest ebook on their kindle, watch films that are barely released and play games all without paying for them because companies like Microsoft and (especially) Apple like to make things so simplistic that it is easier to pay for something than think about the morality of having to pay money for something you ALREADY OWN.

Obviously once you figure out how to get a digital copy of that game you paid for it is an enjoyable and slippery slope to getting games you didn't pay for and before you know it you are an EVIL PIRATE. The companies who want you to pay for all of their products can blame piracy as it is easier than accepting that the market is quite stagnant, and it is increasingly hard to find the best games in shops. In fact other than the top 10 games the best ones you can find are often second hand, which make the shops but not the devs money- rather than address the issue that they are allowing third parties to flood the shelves with remakes, ports and the yearly brandeds (COD/ NHL/ FIFA/ PES etc) they blame the internet, safe in the knowledge that a lot of people are happy to ignore what they are paying and why, and just pay- and these people will shake their heads in disgust because they do not understand.

I have gone on a bit
